The Queen - A Life In Film 1/9. Part 1 - Duty and Destiny

Part 1 - Duty and Destiny
Queen Elizabeth II is one of three British Monarchs of the 20th century who were not born to reign, but who had Monarchy thrust upon them. For much of her childhood, Elizabeth lived the life of a princess without the pressure or knowledge that she would one day be Queen. Her life took its decisive turn when, aged 10, she became first in line to the throne - the Heiress Presumptive.
How did the young Elizabeth respond to the realisation her destiny had changed forever - and how did she prepare for her royal duty and roles as Queen?

I think queen Elizabeth has been a fine example of a monarch. She changed when she had to, accepted things as the need arose. And has behaved in the way someone in her position absolutely should. I quite proud of her. It must be said that she did not do this alone, her husband of practically her whole life, Phillip, has stood by her, and it’s clear they are helpmates and accepting of each other’s personalities. I fear when he dies she may be close behind, and that will be a shame. Her legacy will be that she “bent ,when she must...but did not ever brake “

I worked as a waitress at a royal banquet for the 25th jubilee in Canada. Prince Philip came right into the kitchen to talk to us and he was very funny. I'll never forget that. I also worked a royal banquet in 1982 when Prince Charles and Diana were in Halifax so I got to see them up close. Diana was stunning.

I think the Queen’s grandfather had a lot to do with her being ready to be HRH at such a young age. He always wanted her to be Queen. He saw something in her, he knew she would be a great Queen. I am sure he probably prepared her in someone for her role and destiny.

I've always been fascinated by this royal family and at times felt as if England and Scotland were somehow part of me. Well maybe somewhere deep in me my ancestral roots were just waiting for me to find out were my family is from. What struck me early in this video was a glance that the Queen gave to Prince Philip when their engagement was announced. She looked at him with so much love in her eyes it was very telling. I am so totally in awe of Queen Elizabeth. I lost me dad like she did, in his sleep yet with all her grief she carried on with such strength. God Bless her always.

Whether you’re a royalist or not i don’t think any of us could deny the serious commitment Queen Elizabeth has dedicated to her position as monarch. Enormous privilege yes but great sacrifice in many ways. And never lets it show in public. NONE of the others really get it..... I want live like normal people” poppycock..... who cares if we want a modern royal family “just like us”..... they will NEVER be just like us..... they should make huge sacrifices to serve the people of the Uk/Commonwealth, given that they were fortunate enough to be born into great privilege. The ones that marry into the family should take the same stance. They should be above certain behaviour because they are ROYAL.... if not, what is this blue blood all about? I’m afraid to say that I’m very much in the minority when I say that BOTH Charles and Diana behaved appallingly - Charles should have buckled down and taken his marriage seriously considering his position prevented him from choosing who he wanted to be with and Diana should have put up with Charles and kept her personal life to herself for the same reason. CANT HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT. WE DO NOT NEED ANYMORE HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES - we need a Royal family which puts duty first whether they like it or not, and not do anything which can be Tabloid Fodder. IMPECCABLE BEHAVIOUR . Being modern and in touch with the plight of the Everyman does Not give them the right to behave badly. In return WE should treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve. A private holiday should be just that and we should stop being so interested in what they do when they’re off-duty..... then the problems of paparazzi would not exist.

  • @JaneHenderson

But why isn't he King Philip? The wives of British monarchs tend to receive the ceremonial title of queen-or, more specifically, queen consort. For example, the Elizabeth's mother (also Elizabeth) became queen consort when her husband, George VI became King. Duchess Kate will likely become Queen Catherine when William ascends to the throne. Camilla could become queen consort, though for now Clarence House has announced that "It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne." However, the reciprocal is not true. Men married to the British monarch are known as prince consorts, not king consorts. As with many royal traditions, you can chalk this one up to a very old and powerful patriarchy. Kings always reign, whereas Queen can be a symbolic title.

As far as the Mountbatten name being part of the royal family, I think Philip bided his time after the rejection, until he had sufficient influential allies. One of the allies suggested to him the compromise of the hyphenated Mountbatten-Windsor. Rather than trying to first set out to change Charles' and Anne's names, for which there would be much opposition, he convinced the Queen to get pregnant again. I don't think she ever planned on having more children. Look at the considerable number of years between Anne and Andrew. And, obviously, the Queen was a fertile woman, as she went on to have two more children after Charles and Anne, and there were four years between Andrew and Edward's birth at the age of 38. But, in having a new baby, Philip could bring up the issue and with the support of his allies and taking it to the public, convince the PM and the Queen to relent, which of course they did.

She put off having more children because she had become queen when Charles and Anne were small.. and when she had Andrew she was settled in her role as queen and was able to devote more time to him...

Yes PP knew they needed to get out into the public with the new medium and was a modernising influence. However he didn't sanction the BBC's lying deceit to show the parts of the coronation they promised not to; they did a mock up with a different lens; anti-Monarchy and deceitful bastards even then.

Funny thing that the Church of England in the 1930’s didn’t believe in remarrying when the whole reason for the inception of the Church of England was so king Henry could divorce Queen Catherine and remarry Anne Boleyn? Go figure?🤷🏻‍♀️

Seeing as how Edward and Wallis never had children we still would have had Queen Elizabeth II. She just would have been older when she ascended to the crown because the former King Edward (yes I know he abdicated, was made Duke of Windsor, and effectively exiled. He was still proclaimed king for a bit) outlived his brother by a decade or more
