The Push-Up Mistake That Kills Your Gains and Your Joints

The dreaded push-up hunch is the single most common push-up mistake I see in the gym. It reduces the forces on the muscle while increasing the force on the joints, particularly the wrist and shoulder.

    For years, I could never get my strength to translate into good sets of push-ups. I learned how to do them correctly by accident in a yoga class that I didn't even want to attend (girl..). I suspect that I was physically stronger than everyone in that class (considerably even) but all of their push-ups look so much better than mine. I copied their technique (what you're teaching) and instantly doubled the amount of push-ups I could do AND without pain.

But it always felt like i was just working my rotor cuff and nothing else. What fixed it was me doing pushups in front of a mirror, and breaking down every little thing until the form was absolutely perfect. I had to start again at single reps , then work my way up. Took a while but now my pushups are pain free

    One takeaway of mine from this video is that at the bottom of the rep, allow your scapulae to fully retract and depress (squeeze them together, and while squeezed, pull them a little bit toward your lower back by firing your lats hard). My form normally has the the shoulder blades fully protracted at the top and somewhat protracted during the eccentric, and yes, with a bit of a hunch, which is pretty obvious when my upper trap is tired on my right side only. It certainly feels like everything is firing way harder, so don't be surprised if you can do half the reps you can normally do otherwise.

    Started doing push-ups at 12 years old. Martial arts style was on the knuckles, with arms aligned as you have them. By age 19 I was banging out 100 straight no problem. Wish I could still do that but unfortunately due to many injuries my shoulders are shot.

    The feel of the movement and form is something I'm only recently learning. I humbly admit I've performed pushups with a hunch until a couple of years ago and now that I'm (STILL) working on proper form, my rep range has dramatically decreased. However, I've noticed it feels better when I get it right. Glutes and legs clinched and stiff, back rigid too with an inverted hollow body hold at the top of the pushup. Squeeze, then slow, controlled decent with elbows tucked in and hands positioned at the lower portion of the pecs. The hardest thing is to stop counting reps and focus on the feel of the movement. We get caught up in progress but I'd wager if we took the first set to get the feel of whatever we are about to perform, then the next set(s) as normal, we would dramatically improve. After all, quality over quantity and it is king.

    Excellent video. I use push ups a lot in my routine and have done push ups throughout my life. Last year I had shoulder pain which caused me to basically stop training. (Guess that’s what happens when you re in your 50s). The inflammation in my shoulder caused inflexibility and reduced mobility. Basically I had an impingement. Since I stopped training the shoulder is 100 percent better. Long story short...I look forward to going back to the old faithful push up, and this video demonstrates how I probably hurt myself doing push-ups improperly and being complacent and not paying detailed attention to form. Sorry for being long winded. But much appreciated advise, especially when you mentioned how just a little misalignment is enough to ruin your joints. 👍🏻

    Hi Matt. Definitely agree that push-ups need a LOT of exploration. Like every workout. For a time I actually started doing them by lying belly down on the floor and going through a kind of checklist of shoulders back, down, hands screwing outwards etc. before even starting them. It makes such a difference. But then you have to hold this throughout, and think about tensing the chest and on and on. Push-ups are definitely overlooked as an exercise since few of us do them truly right. Nice video that I'm sure will save many shoulders.

    I've been doing standard military pushups for years. They've strengthened my wrists, forearms, biceps, shoulders, abs, and my upper core. Plus they were comfortable. But my shoulders and neck are hunched forward, and a trainer confirmed that the pushups are part of that problem because of some sort of positioning and neglected back muscles. I stopped doing pushups, replacing them with dumbbell curls, which greatly improved my bicep strength but still has an unknown effect on the rest of my body. I also do a rolly thing for my back muscles. I'm not entirely sure what to do.

    Yeah, I didn't realise I was doing push-ups wrong until I was 35... I figured there was nothing to get wrong. I just thought it was a coincidence that I'd get scapula troubles whenever I started going for a fitness buzz and doing a lot of push-ups. I'm 42 and finally I'm using better form, and the development of muscles is totally different than my old form.

    Listen to him. I had a competition with some officers in the military and we did about 100 burpees in 12 minutes. The more tired I got, the more I started to hunch. Eventually I ripped the muscle in my shoulder and also dislocated it. Do the form correctly and know your limits if you don't want to destroy your shoulders.

    I get what you're saying about the strength aspect. But the reason they hunch is to allow the more range of motion, without compromising the safety of the shoulder. It's safer for beginners, and simply hunching with the elbows not flaring out, makes a really safe position, especially in beginners, for the shoulder joint.

  • @RedDeltaProject

    @RedDeltaProject

    Actually, the hunch will decrease the Rom, especially at the chest, and shoulder.

    Also, my favorite way to do pushups is the pause or slow method. I try to stop at every point and hold it. Obviously, the hardest part is at the bottom. This is where it try to hold 5 or 6 seconds. Anyway, thanks again.

    Sone people say that "The scapula should be able to move freely along the rib cage and go through retraction and protraction. In other words, full protraction at the top, fully retracted at the bottom. Train the joint through full ROM" I would really appreciate your thoughts on this.

    For sure, movement is keys nd often an easier way to make sure you're packing the shoulders back a the bottom of each rep.
