CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After moving Christopher (Jaden Smith) into his new apartment, Chris (Will Smith) shoots hoops with his son and gives him important life lessons on protecting his dreams and aspirations.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The rousing, true-life story of a single dad who went from living on the streets to owning his own brokerage firm is brought to the big screen by superstar Will Smith, appearing for the first time opposite his real-life son Jaden Smith. Set in early-'80s San Francisco, the film charts the hard times and eventual comeback of Chris Gardner, a suddenly single salesman who has custody of his son, but finds that providing for the two of them is a challenge in the increasingly unstable economic climate. He struggles to work his way from unpaid intern at Dean Witter to something more substantial, even as life continues to offer him setbacks. Making his Hollywood debut, Italian director Gabriele Muccino was championed by Will Smith for the project.

What makes this so powerful is how Will shoots Jaydens dream down at first. We see him recognize his own weakness in real time. He realizes he is projecting his own failures on to his kid.

@kbanghart

I hope you don't feel too bad, yes our parents can have a big effect on us but it also comes from our own motivation. Because my own father told me something similar like this, which was great but I'm not the type of person to take a leap of faith all the time and do things spontaneous constantly, so it didn't necessarily affect me as positively as it sounds.

Man, everybody has watched this movie and says it's a good movie but sometimes it feels like nobody has really watched it because how can you not cry as you watch this movie and relate to it. This is scene is the most powerful and important part of the movie in my opinion. I swear, everybody knows this scene and how true and deep the message is yet nobody FUCKING practices what this scene preaches. I swear, man, many people bash on a person's dreams or take them away because they never put themselves in their shoes. Sometimes, I feel people watch something and know something's true yet never actually understand it because they never practice or incorporate it into their own lives. Not until you devote yourself to your dream no matter will you realize the true meanings of this movie. You'll look at this movie in a different light. The Pursuit of Happyness isn't a huge obstacle you will overcome one day. The pursuit is everyday, everyday you have to be working on your dream despite what people say. FUCK PEOPLE this is your dream and you only got one shot. Another one of my favorite parts in the movie is when Will Smith says "It was right then that I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson on the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it. No matter what. How did he know that?"

U gotta do it
I know it’s a movie but I always love when a parent talks with their child like an equal, has an “adult” conversation. Even if the kid is old enough to fully understand or fully grasp the concept of the conversation. My oldest brother does this with his kid and it’s awesome. But there’s always time for imagination and games. :)
This movie gave me so much motivation to move forward with my life!! When I watched I was working groceries (nothing wrong with it) making crap money a week!! In less than 5 years now I have my own business and able to afford things I could only dream of. So I say don’t let no one put you down. Go for it put in work and u will succeed.
It was always a dream of mine to participate in a science project, but when I approached my teachers to enrol into it, they demotivated and told me that there is no way a kid like me can make it and that they won't let me participate. It had almost gotten to me, but my eyes are now open, I told them that I can if I want to if teachers (referring to them) actually try to provide students with appropriate information and not trash talk to them. I will give everything I have and will also provide with progress updates. Wish me luck and don't let others decide your destiny, your journey is only yours

4 years later, how are you doing?
This scene hits home because all of us who watched it and resonated with it ultimately have something from our past - a chip on your shoulder from failure. And although we aren't perfect and can make a mess of things - in this moment when watching a film - you're able to at times live vicariously through these characters. Beautiful movie.
I wont lie. Nothing has ever touched my heart more than this scene. There's so much there in that 2 mins
This scene touches my heart everytime i shed a tear everytime amazing movie. Period
I remember when they showed us this movie in class. It was the only time I actually loved a movie that was shown at school.
Sometimes...it is our children that teach us more than our mentors or peers. Sometimes it's about analyzing yourself and seeing the adult you are raising. That is what makes this scene so powerful.
Words are powerful. My Dad never told me anything of inspiration my whole life, in fact he shot down any dreams I had about school and my future. When I have a kid I’m going to build him up and father him like the father I needed in my life.
I imagine that every single person that has seen this movie, sheded tears. I don't believe it's possible not to do so. Truly a touching and inspiring movie. Much respect to the man that inspired such a masterpiece, the actors, directors and everyone who had a hand into bringing this story to the screen to make all of our asses cry lol. Just beautiful.
This moment was more genuine than Will's recent, real life "apology".
Beautiful message...

Never had this kind of talk with my dad. He wasn't always there and if he did, it was only during the good times. This is so inspirational and made me think that if I ever have kids, this is the kind of father I would like to be. I still love my father though and I am thankful to be the person I am today.
When i have Children of my own im a show them this movie, SUCH AN POWERFUL AND AMAZING SCENE. I used to get discouraged and not motivated cause i used to overthink my parents weren't happy for me or were feeling bad cause i was going through what they went through... Sometimes parents tend to lose faith cause they try to compare their life to thier children's, but they are the first to believe in you , even when you dont. 🤲🤞
I'm here because I watched this clip in college class today and I was learning about how Will Smith had a fixed mindset here at first because he talked down on the kid then his mindset changed to a growth positive mindset and he inspired the little kid to chase his dreams even if your own father tells you you won't get better. That's the kind of inspiration I need bro. I watched the right video for this. 😢 I even shed a tear thinking how deep this moment was.
Real Life lessons from Father to Son. He should've got the Oscars for this movie. Will and Jaden did this scene Justice!
I've watched this so many times, and every time it gets me emotional
Best life quote ever!!!!!!
This movie made me cry.
Best dad ever
This movie and clip has many aspects that resonate. Will Smith realizes that he totally crushed his son and potentially his spirit. He did recover the conversation well by readdressing the conversation with his son and ensuring he understood that he should always fight for what he wants and what his dreams are. It was touching.
From dry eyes to tears in 1 min and 49 seconds. Every time!
This scene is valuable and holds a lot of truth about life, that many are yet to realise.

I'M NOT EVEN WATCHING THE MOVIE. I CAN HEAR IT IN THE BACKGROUND AND IT'S MAKING ME CRY. THIS MOVIE CAME ACROSS MY MIND LAST NIGHT. I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS GOING TO. AIR TODAY.
I come here to cry sometimes. The struggle is too heavy to bear sometimes without encouragement.
This means more to me now as a working adult than when I watched this movie as a child and later in college. Starting college you think you have it all figured out and that you are on the path to your dream. Then you often hit roadblocks. My job is good, but not my dream job. I want to keep dreaming and I want to go for it. I want to still believe that I can have the life I've always wanted. This speech is a call to me to reawaken the dreams I thought died.
Y’all don’t realize this went beyond acting, this was will REALLY talking to his son.
I remember in August I was watching this movie and this scene hit close to home and I remember breaking down crying thinking I don’t have what it takes I texted my dad. The girl I was dating left me at the time and I just lost so much and it really hit me close to home and I felt like I lost so much!

My favorite movie of all time. Honesty been giving out hope that I’ll ever be able to accomplish my dreams lately. Things just haven’t been going my way as of late and it’s hard to find happiness in where I’m at. But that doesn’t mean that I’m going to stop trying because someone tells me “you can’t do that” or “that’s not realistic”. I’m going to see my dream through to the end, and hopefully at some point have kids and teach them the same thing. Whoever you are, wherever you are, keep reaching for your dreams.
Rest In Peace Kobe and Gianna Bryant!!!😰😰😰😰

I’ve never seen this movie before, but I absolutely love this scene. Ive been rewatching it and it’s been very motivational for me, I tell myself, “if you have a dream, you have to protect it” when I’m working out, etc. I love wills expression here as well. A side note, when will initially shoots down Jayden’s dream, Jayden throws the ball down and the next thing you hear is the sound of him opening the plastic bag. I thought that was interesting as the director is telling us that because of his dad’s discouragement, Jayden would go on to mourn his dream, working menial jobs and not living up to his potential
