The Psychology of The Villain

The villain is the most captivating and intriguing of all archetypes. The hero would not exist without his darker counterpart, which reflects aspects of ourselves that we do not dare to acknowledge or confront, but which are present within all of us.
The villain is often a mirror of the dark aspects of humanity, embodying qualities that are evil, harmful, greedy, selfish, and destructive. In recent times, villains can even become sympathetic, and possess redeeming qualities, making some of them oddly likeable despite their malicious intent and immoral actions, thus challenging our traditional notions of good and evil. This type of villain has never existed to the degree it exists in the 21st century, symbolising a major change in the collective unconscious-which speaks to a psychological experience that is common to us all.

You can take and use the villains power in exchange for some things. To put it precisely it's making a deal with your own inner devil.

The interesting thing about the dark triad is that they are like rock-paper-scissors, the narcissist is the weakness of a Machiavellian because they are likeable so they foster loyalty from the people which makes them a threat to the control of the Machiavellian but is weak to the psychopathic because they need the constant validation from people but psychpaths couldn't care less about people, the Machiavellian loses to the narcissist because they either get overthrown or risk rebellion by making the narcissist a martyr, but through their control they eliminate the psychopath's ability to cause any harm, the paychopaths inability to care about morality, social norms or anything about societal structure make them immune to the manipulation of narcissists and even cause narcissists to let their masks slip off exposing their ugly truth to everyone but because they thrive on impulsivity and their inability to hide their true nature the opressive control of a Machiavellian makes their existence impossible.

Instead of shying away from it or BLAMING others for your State, you actually OWN it and Walk the Path of Balance. Our Ego is just the Mask we wear.....if we can Study the Roles then we Know which Role we are in at the Time. The Best Thing we can do is Life is to Own the Role we are in and how to Discern when the Roles Change. We all Wear many Hats.

Hero and villain are relative, temporary labels to characters. What label you assign to each character depends on the moment (aka what events have occurred until that specific moment) and from whose perspective you analyze the character. The anti-hero can get away with his tricks while the hero is blamed for the anti-hero's mistakes. We all were villains at some point. We all revealed our shadow at least once. Embrace this reality and accept yourself as complex,ever-changing human being.

This is good stuff .... See, this is why so many modern movies suck. They've done away with compelling villains that put us in touch with our own darker traits. Villains are no longer nuanced dark reflections of the hero. They've become so shallow, trite and simplistic. Most of the time, it just seems like they're just there to be a "big boss" to end the game, so to speak.

I've always like the villains more. They tend to be more insightful and edgy. I prefer the antiheroes most. They came into the scene quite early in comics and I love Dostoevsky's antiheros. I always enjoyed their anti society outlooks.

Praising Nietzsche while condemning Machiavelli is contradictory because Nietzsche himself saw Machiavelli as a prime example of a man who transcended contemporary morality. Moreover, quoting from "Beyond Good and Evil" in a video about heroes and villains is incredibly ironic.

😃 I love this yt channel. 😃 🤔 Was Niccolo Machiavelli a villain? Why? Could somebody explain that to me so I can I learn it, please?🤔 🤔 Is there something like "The Psychology Of The Vampire"? How the psychology of vampires (if they had any) could be? 🤔 🤔 In Umberto Eco's The Name Of The Rose, is William of Baskerville the hero? Or is it Jorge de Burgos (who seems to be "the villain")? Incidentally, can we highlight from that novel something like "The Psychology Of The Heretics? How the psychology of heretics (if such thing would exist) could be? 🤔 😃 Thank you! 😃

I liked that original comic book sketch that portrayed the Joker and Batman as kindred to one another in their psychologies. In Hollywood, they always try to pit them against one another as the stupid "good" vs "evil" cliche. The truth of things is always much more nuanced and complex.

  • @solgast

There is still the problematic extremes of dualism, the good and evil. The pendulum swings to one extreme to the next. Most people forget to see the gray-zone in between good and evil. You are the bridge between. The whole. When your pendulums settles down it will be easier to see this.

I like your inclusion of comic book/graphic novel examples of heroes & villains. I believe it was Grant Morrison who drew the comparison (no doubt as a result of having studied Jung and Campbell) that super-heroes fulfill the role, in the modern day, which once the gods did; many super-heroes are gods or demigods or some equivalent thereof (Superman). Same archetypes, just rebranded and recontextualised for the present. I'm curious, have you read Morrison's Multiversity?

The thing about super Heroes is they are vigilantes, outside of the Law and above the Law that binds us all to the structure of our civilization. They are in many ways as evil and dangerous to that civilization as the villains they appose. The constraints of Law prevent citizens from using the power of violence which is supposed to be in the sole domain of the Government, the agreed upon arbiter of the peace. Of course, Superheroes aren't real but vigilantes are and their dispensing of swift justice is at odds with maintaining the peace. They are considered criminals in both democratic and authoritarian States as they disrupt and challenge the authority of the State. BUT, we all long to be such people as take control and bring what justice we think is right, for us. It is both childish and selfish and lives deep in everybody's heart. Policemen are the government's well trained and disciplined (LOL), agents of public violence, to maintain order, with the Court system to apply governmental justice.
