The Psychology of Personality Types (Know Yourself)

We all have a particular personality type, and at the same time, we are all unique. To partake in the journey of discovering who we truly are, it is necessary for us to know our true and authentic personality. The quest to know ourselves allows us to better understand the complexity and intricacies of the human condition, improve our relationship with ourselves, with others, and with the world.
Carl Jung’s model of typology is not a system of character analysis, nor is it a way of labelling oneself or others. Much as one might use a compass to determine where one is in the physical world, Jung’s typology is a tool for psychological orientation.
The main aspects are the attitude types: extraversion and introversion, and the psychological functions: feeling, thinking, sensation and intuition.

This video explains well how an introvert can become immersed in something they enjoy and act more extroverted. I'm a introvert but also very outgoing, but only when in an environment I'm familiar with, and always struggled to explain this. In new places, or around a lot of people, I become overstimulated and close up, often getting lost in thought.

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this as well but I find that our contemporary western culture heavily weighs in favor of the extrovert personality type whereas introversion is highly underappreciated, to a fault undoubtedly. Somehow I believe that certain pathologies in our culture can be traced to this particular lack of balance in the valuation of these personality types. The cesspool of trashy and soulless content on TikTok is, to my mind, a stark example of superfluous hyper-extraverted energy that is likely to harm the minds and souls of young people coming of age today. Just an observation an opinion of mine after a bit of musing.

Yes, the world was built for the extrovert, our modern day classrooms, gathering places, religious places. Modern idea of an "introvert" is kinda wrong and dangerous, you're not an introvert you just have social anxiety. An introvert values internal things while an extravert values outer things. At the time of jung all types would go outside and work and socialize, you can't just stay at home and put the blame on your personality type.Oh and you can change your type and become an extravert.Introvert and extravert ARE NOT ONLY SOCIAL CONCEPTS they affect EVERYTHING in your life all the way from the smallest decisions you make up to the biggest things you are willing to sacrifice and all in between,it's way WAY too broad for you to just say "I like to stay at home so I am an introvert" that's not how it works.

And after the shrooms, I felt disconnected from everyone and everything around me. I just wanted to alone. I am learning to feel happiness from within myself, not running from myself. Understanding your own and the other person's dominat function is paramount in dealing with obstacles in the development of any relationship. Knowing how to direct one's explanations about the problem and knowing what actually are obstacles and what aren't, (a.i. what constitutes the person's uniqueness which can be cultivated and harvested) will save so much time and turmoil. Of course, it's impossible to deal with people who are too extremely low on openness or high on narcisism, so it's very wise to know yourself and to learn to identify traits which are pathologically extreme and save your efforts.

If you want to become a psychologist, please know that 100 years later the field has grown far beyond where Jung left off in 1961. One might explore Jung and his meanings for years and not get to the psychological discoveries of the 1970’s and ongoing from there. If Psychology interests you, pair your interest in Jung with modern understandings from Cognitive Behavioral Psychology and the affective concepts in Emotional Intelligence. All three, Freud, Adler, Jung, were products of their time, made valuable contributions for their day, and were pioneers. But pioneers, scouts, and explorers do not build cities. Settlers do. By the 1980’s the field of study known as psychology had begun to settle, firm up, coalesce, honor the founders but go beyond them. Personally, I believe Jung himself who as he matured called himself a medical psychologist would have applauded such growth. If you study psychology, take care to study the last 50 years of the field, not just its historic antecedents. Otherwise you will become like someone who says “I want to be a physician-but I’m not going to study anything from the last 62 years.” Jung died 1961.

I recall watching an interview with the Jungian Analyst Robert A. Johnson, and he spoke about his initial one-on-one encounters with Jung. Johnson, who describes himself as an introverted feeling type, noted that Jung spoke to him in a gentle and reassuring manner, encouraging through positive affirmation, easing him into the analytical process little by little. However, when Johnson had encountered Jung outside of his office his projection was shattered. Johnson was confused, its as if Jung was a different person with him than others. However, after some reflection and chewing some nourishment out his projection, Johnson had realized that what Jung was doing was speaking his typology or rather communicating with him in his language. He noted that had Jung treated him like some of the other students/colleagues he wouldn't have been able to take it. His ego was not yet strong enough and Jung realized this more than likely through a sense of intuition. What I take from that story is that if one is able to truly dialogue with another's typology they are embracing a nuanced sense of empathy, and empathy rich with curiosity, which undoubtedly sets off a deeper curiosity for oneself. Much love and thank you for all the work you do.

A couple of years ago, I made a crazy video where I painted my face with a black marker and screamed like a madman, "paint when you are sick, paint when you’re hungry, paint when you’re tired, paint, paint, paint and paint." The profound wisdom behind this madness is to train yourself to be disciplined and to work on your creative work, even when you don't feel like it. This applies to all kinds of creative work, not just painting. I recommend doing something crazy just to keep yourself busy, like pouring out paint onto paper and moving it around with your bare hands. The end result doesn't matter as much as the act of doing it. Of course, I have to force myself to get out of bed, make coffee, and vacuum my place. I have to force myself to call a friend, just because I promised I would. If you only do what you want in life, you'll end up screwing up your life. Often you need to do what must be done, even if you don't feel like it. But this is your destiny. You can’t fight your destiny. The key is to develop brutal discipline, to keep pushing yourself even when you're not motivated, and to keep creating using the force of nature within yourself, for it is bigger than you. Remember, it's not the outcome that matters as much as the process of living creative life.

I've always been an advocate of introversion being underrated. And yet, an introvert must himself become an extrovert to make his two halves whole. Because in reality one is neither introverted nor extroverted, but rather, one creates the experience of intro- or extroversion through limiting one's behavior a certain way. That limiting having happened mostly during childhood of course. And yet we never do question ourselves, we never see that there are other ways to be but our own. We never have the courage to discard our own opinions and interests in the face of the unknown.

I am an introvert…I love my own company and there’s nothing nicer than being true and honest to myself. It’s not hiding in darkness, it’s like tasting the moon and riding the wind and soaking up the peacefulness of the soul…it builds intuition and provides opportunity to plan and understand and think for myself. I run from no man…I bow to no man…and I guide my own ship.

Excellent topic, really glad you made this video! I wonder what Jung would think of a set of psychological patients today. Would the categorizations fall into the same place? Surely our base personality structures have not changed much since his time, but the ways that they manifest are probably significantly different. Really enjoyed this breakdown!

I express my gratitude for the publishing this and similar videos to the society, they are very helpful for the broad auditory of people. Many years ago when I studied at the unversity I was told by my psychology teacher that I belonged to the rare type but unfortunately it was told with some deel of negativity and it left something like a dust of sadness on my soul. I've done a test and I've received INFJ personality result so it helps me understand myself better without any negative prejudices so that I could handle the hurdles, choose the correct career path and so on. Yes, I am naturally very intuitive. Many thanks!

This is one of those topics that I delve into daily and to say that I don't enjoy interacting with some types would be an understatement never mind the society they've created that is disturbingly dysfunctional. In the work place wowzers do some types create problems especially when in management hence why so many out there in the world are suffering burn out.

the way sensing and intuition are explained here is why we have so much intuitive bias in the typology community. nobody wants to be the "boring sensors", everyone thinks they're intuitive.

I’ve heard people talk about how we don’t know our own ‘character’ if it wasn’t for other people (the external) For example: If people say your funny, then you assume and call yourself funny because others have made that ‘creation of you’ But, if you spoke to absolutely nobody your whole life - what basis would you conclude that you are indeed funny?

18:48 = me. My father was an aeronautical engineer for Lockheed-Martin. So was his father. I was expected to do the same, but could barely pass basic algebra. My gift is music and arts, which they never really supported. As a result, I was an alcoholic-drug addict for many years, always thinking about how I was never good enough. It wasn’t until I was in my late 30’s that I finally found a career path that worked for me.

Thank you for reiterating that MBTI is not static. People put too much emphasis on this. My view is that over time and hardship in life people gradually begin to be less impulsive and therefore less extroverted and also more judgemental ... Fear dominates unless we are aware and keep it at bay.

I'd see myself as an introvert who acts extroverted. I dont naturally seek out many people but when they do happen to me I create a very confident and happy facade almost so that nobody will know that I find it truly exhausting to be social and would be happy only seeing the same 20 people for the next 2 years if I could.

I like my alone time for contemplation, and I like my social life for its feeling, genuineness. I think anyone can be anyone as long as they try to be. Peace, wealth, and health to all.

It is a fact that most successful CEO's or Business owners are Introverts because Extroverts tend to self-sabotage more often since they usually avoid reflecting before doing and are more squirrelly minded because they get distracted easier by external stimuli. Personally I think most people moderate between introversion and extroversion behavior depending on their situations and environment.
