Anyone know of working as a psych tech on a psych floor while in nursing school will be helpful (in terms of “nursing experience”) for payroll qualifications later on as a nurse?

No. You're not working in the role of an RN. It may help you getting a position though! A good CNA/ MHT can most definitely make a fantastic RN. Good luck.

I disagree. While working as a tech you still absorb information. On downtime you can talk to your nurses about medications, diagnosis’s of patients your caring for and how what you can do in your current role can help the patient. I worked as a tech in a behavioral ED. It helped me significantly because I learned the CIWA/COWS scales and what to look for. I would practice assessments in my head while getting vitals. My nurses would ask me what I thought, do their assessment and helped to me understand why I was correct in my thought process or incorrect and how to better my skills.
