I heard this is such a common issue in psych NP nursing where many providers are only given 15 minutes per med review. Quick question, when it came to signing your contract with your practice, does your contract outline how many minutes you will have for medication reviews and psych evals? I have colleagues who were told that they would have 25 minute med reviews & 90 minute evaluations during their interview but when they started, it was all a lie and they really could not argue it because the agreed terms during the interview were not outlined in their contract. I am curious to hear how your contract was outlined. Thanks!

I just left a job I worked at where I saw on average of 22 patients, at times 29 patients per day. 1 hr eval, 20min follow-up including children. After 3.5 yrs, I felt overwhelmed. Good to know I was being abused and they made a killing off me like you said. I made what I thought was decent money but obviously should have made more. Sounds like Maryland pays better than NYC. Congrats on all your achievements!

Psych NP, great video. In Ohio the salary is roughly the same, someone with a couple years experience can expect to make between 150-220K, although, Ohio does require a physician collaborative agreement. I have heard several different salaries for new PMHNP grads, including a low end of 109K, but most should expect a low end of 140-160k after a year of experience. I have a few semesters to go before I can sit for boards, but have always loved psych, it was my first degree before nursing, and I am actually giving up a senior nurse executive career to do my PMHNP program, which also is self-reassurance that this career change from the business side of health care to the provider side is not salary driven for myself as it may be for others. I have several friends, that over the years, know the salary expectations behind this specialty track who have continued to focus on the FNP or other NP tracks, which I agree is very smart, while the salary may be good in this specialty, I would not recommend making that anyone's driver, they may find themselves burned out and moving back into another area of nursing if that is their only goal. I appreciate your videos, keep up the good work!

@Danielle Bridgeman you make so many great points. I can only speak from experience and speaking with physicians, NP's, and patients. I believe the average age for NP's is in the 40's. Many NP's have loans from prior degrees which dissuade them from medical school, as well as children and families used to a higher income that would alter life in a big way to start over in school. A good friend of mine who is a hospital internist reported to me that before I think about medical school take into consideration current loan debt, years of work in school and how much time I will have left to practice. Medical schools also take this into account during admissions, that is, how much practice time will this individual have left? Don't get me wrong, this is not the only consideration, I've met nurses in the past that went back to medical school in their 30's and 40's and did well, but it seems that they are the exception and not the rule. As far as patients trusting their psychiatric provider, I feel this really comes down to the provider. I've met patients who don't trust their doctor as well. That's why the initial intake should be focused on patient safety and building rapport. These are only my thoughts from my personal experiences. I'm sure many others have great experiences and thoughts to share as well. Many great points made though.

And as a NP you are guaranteed that type of pay,? It’s no work you’re way up or experience like we will gain experience but like RN you have to work you’re way up for higher pay have a speciality or be a traveling nurse to make the 80,000 to 100,000 range of pay?
