The PSA JAKL: Your Next Rifle!

Спорт

Is the PSA JAKL good enough to justify the $1,300 price tag? That's what we're going over in this video. Let us know what you think. Are you going to pick one up?

I already have one. Here’s my review. Shoots like a scar L, little heavier than most piston AR’s, very solid so far. Trigger that comes with it is great.

1:02 You actually can run that BCM grip on a pistol because it’s 86 degrees. BCM for some reason markets this grip as a “vertical grip” when it’s not. The ATF only consideres grips with a 90 degree angle to be vertical grips so this would be fine to run on a pistol guys. Overall good video and review though!

Supposedly BCM changed the name to VFG because they caught heat from the ATF over this very issue and despite wording in the rule/law they do indeed consider that BCM grip to be a VFG. The problem we run into is super poorly worded determinations that are insanely open to interpretation or flatout not followed and enforced as they see fit in the moment. Keep in mind a dude basically just got murdered for "breaking" a law that has no actual definition. Anything you do with guns at this point is at your own risk, especially with the ATF doing whatever they want with excessive force.

Well, a grip is not a firearm, tobacco, or alcohol - neither are stocks, sights, charging handles, binos, or suppressors. So the ATF aren't actually required to regulate or even have an opinion on any of them. They can take a hike.

I now own one. Mine didn't come with any blemishes what so ever so I'm glad they did hone in on that manufacturing process. The cuts are nice and smooth. It's an amazing weapon to hold. Only polymer part is stock and grip. Everything thing else is metal. Brand new is really rigid charging handle cause of course it goes through quality control from palmetto first before getting shipped out. This rifle is a thing of beauty. Videos and pictures don't do it justice. It's an amazing piece of machinery to hold and have. Magpul mbus flip up irons are a must, and magpul handstop is super comfortable to hold. I attached an m lok sling mount on the very front and used the QD mount slot on the stock for my sling mounts. It's really something Edit mines came with the JAKL knurled charging handle also. So that really gives the gun a nice finishing touch.

08:35 facts, I agree with you on people saying not to buy something other than an AR... blah blah blah. I am in that spot regarding exploring bullpups. I have heard the cons and even echoed some of those myself. However, that was a long time ago. Bullpups are changing and, more are coming to market, including a JAKL bullpup from PSA. So to your point, something I have said even recently, there is a first time for every platform. Once upon a time even AR-15s didn't exist and M-16s were garbage until the A2 came out with fixes. Everything has to evolve over time. It doesn't happen when no one wants to go outside the AR-15 platform.

Great review and I second all the points you make. I will say that the recoil impulse is very soft but the muzzle flip/movement is higher than a standard AR. There is a lot of mass moving with the piston/bolt and that creates that different feel you mention (vs. an AR). I don’t like the stock as I tend to put my cheek weld toward the back of the stock, that puts my cheek right in the gap. I think this rifle would benefit from a break/comp combo just to help keep the muzzle steady. Overall it’s a fun range toy for me.

Bought mine in November of 23 and have put about 2000 rounds into it. Only issues I’ve run into are just the bolt catch snapping. Nothing catastrophic and the gun was still functional because I could just pull the charging handle to drop the bolt. Nothing that 5 minutes with a punch set didn’t fix.

I have this exact one and run it during trainings. It’s been reliable and super fun. I disagree that you’ll feel more recoil in the Jakl than an AR-15, but only my opinion. I’d recommend it to anyone thinking about it and remember the lifetime warranty

  • @bigshoe84

    @bigshoe84

I would agree about the recoil as far as suppressed at least. I think it mostly comes down to how well tuned the standard AR is. They are typically over gassed so when you throw a can on them it gets more harsh and gassy. With a perfectly tuned AR setup for suppression it’s probably similar.

Eotech HHS V (EXPS3-4 w/G45 mag) and a Streamlight Pro Tac 2.0 and I’ve even got the same VFG on order lol. My rifle is the 14.5” version though. I set it up this way purely because I thought it would look the coolest lol. Unlike many in this hobby, I don’t have a going to war fantasy, this rifle is purely a hobby rifle that will be used to shoot steel plates from 50-100 yards away and aim at my own head in the mirror. I do hate to hear that it’s heavy though. Surely it will still be lighter than my 20” SFAR.

Considering it's a piston, the price is pretty reasonable for what you get. Go price PWS, LWRC, SCAR-L, or an ACR. I added a P&W Dead Air Keymount muzzle brake that lightened up the already light recoil. I sold my Scar and bought this and a LWRC DI with the money. I am very pleased with my purchase.

The reason they seem rough is lack of post cut finishing, which for something like mlok and it's wide tolerance is a quick touch of a sandpaper dremel wheel at low speed. So a big negative on PSA's part.

Would be a good rifle if they secured the barrel in a much better, rigid, robust, more secure way. But for screws for your barrel to stay on?? Damn. And I really wanted one, but that I didn't like. A barrel should have a large barrel nut, or a large pin going all the way through the trunnion. Not just screws into the side of the trunnion. I would have like to see a couple pins going through the trunnion a lot like the pin on a gas block does on a pinned gas block. Or a female screw on one side of the trunnion that gets a make screw from the other side and have a couple of those going all the way through. Where the outer female is a little over-sized, so you have to tap it through, then have the clamping force of the make screw going through from the other side.

My JAKL malfunctioned and jammed after just two rounds. It wasn't a simple malfunction either. The bolt jammed out of battery, and I couldn't clear it at the range. The weapon was well lubricated and literally brand new. I've never had a new weapon simply refuse to function like that. At this point, I'm not even sure I want to bother with it, and might just send it back for a refund.

@@TNCombatMedic except in .308; the B&T 308 suffered a LOT of problems in several reviews I've seen of it, mostly in terms of reliable feeding/extracting. Could be an issue with ammo, but if the freedom seeds are the cause of your malfunctions, you either have really bad handloads, or your gun is WAY undergassed

You think they WATER JET the handrail and not stamp them? I would think stamping them would be way more efficient than a slow AF water jet.
