It's actually kind of uncanny how well The Father Of Death parallels the rise of the reactionary antivax movement - probably because this isn't the first time people have pulled this trick to gain power. It starts with a flawed system. The City at the start of Act II, the City that worked Light's father into his grave without a second thought. It is not a dystopia, but it could not possibly be mistaken for a utopia either. So people become rightfully disillusioned with it. Then a catastrophe happens, something that disturbs the order of the system. Light and Wily's machines upend the economy, the pandemic sweeps across the world. Things are changing now, there is no way to stop that. It is a scary time, and nobody has confidence that the system will make the right choices to navigate it. But nevertheless, there is good in the world. There are good doctors working very hard to build technology that will save countless lives. Then Albert Wily comes along, and decides that when the dust settles, he will be the one on top. All he needs to do is offer people protection. There is a danger in the world, oh yes - it's Dr. Light, he murdered Emily. It's the vaccines, they're trying to microchip you or alter your dna. They aren't trying to save the world, they're trying to destroy it. How can you question who's to blame? "Where's your evidence?" Doesn't matter, now listen - the Good Doctor has to pay! And the system, somehow, in spite of all its flaws, does something right for once. It finds Dr. Light innocent. It distributes the vaccines to its citizens, free of charge. It stands out of the way of good and gives it a chance to be done. But the people are scared, now. They've been listening to demagogues like Wily on the news for years now, and they're not about to stop here. The good doctor is dangerous. And if the system is defending it, well - then that must be what's wrong with the system. Never mind all the dead fathers sacrificed on the altar of profit, this man here is the real villain. And they bring out the rope. And they storm the US Capitol in 2021, and they descend on Ottawa in 2022, trying their best to hand over the world to those men in towers who will build them their mythical perfect world free of undesirables like Light and watch over them as they eke out their existence. The world hasn't fallen under darkness yet. If we all stand together, we've still got hope.

@@splashcat5485 They are poorly designed from a medical standpoint and mostly being mandated as a way to embezzle public funds. It's simply the kind of run of the mill corruption we like to pretend doesn't happen in first world countries. Yes, I am "doubling down" on this. It's called "believing in things". Turns out that people who have different beliefs than yourself, believe they are true, with the same passionate intensity you have for your own beliefs.

Hospitalization rates among the vaccinated are less than a tenth what they are among the vaccinated, I wouldn't be surprised if they could be better but they are clearly doing incredible amounts of good. They are also being provided to governments for pennies on the dollar compared to the usual profit margins of pharmaceutical companies. Like, there are absolutely disgusting cases of exploitation by for-profit medical companies, just look at the profit margin on an EpiPen. And even with vaccines themselves the way companies are holding on to their profits with an iron grip and selling booster after booster to first world countries while ignoring third world countries and turning them into breeding grounds for variants is utterly unforgivable. But the fact remains that vaccines save lives and so do vaccine mandates. What the doctors signed off on is fine. It's the executives that need to go. The part I'm calling "doubling down" is when your response to "you are like the people who listened to Wily's lies" is "yes, I am." I don't have issue with you defending yourself, if you'd tried to explain how you actually did have good reasons to believe what you did that's normal and fine. I'd also like to clarify that you seem a lot more reasonable than the average person I meant that comment to criticize - while I think you're wrong and the policy you support is dangerous, you don't seem to have turned off into the kind of "vaccines are a plot to control you vaccine mandates are tyranny" conspiracism that a lot of people have.

ngl, them being pissed might be a good thing because maybe this video weeded out most of the worst people in their audience (namely the extremely open Nazis who co-opted Hold Back the Night, and if you don't know what I'm referring to, honestly good for you they're not worth paying attention to in any context other than cursing off), of whom they seem to have had a very rough time getting rid of (it's a long story)

Vaccines have been mandated for lots of things forever, schools have made you be vaccinated for things for like 30 years. I think the notion of “you shouldn’t have to get vaccinated for a virus that evolves constantly and kills people” is a very dangerous one.
