I have over 30 years of boating experience, from renting to owning many different boats, and my best advice would be, to meet and make friends with people at a good yacht club, and go out on their boats. And when the invites come, and they will, make sure you show up, on time, with plenty of food and drinks, and always be grateful for the invitation, and NEVER OFFER $$$ for gas, it’s usually taken as an insult.

Differing rules for each club/location. I’ve been a member for over a year and couldn’t be happier. I’ve looked at it every which way. Not dealing with the storage, trailering, maintenance, launching, registration, insurance, cleanup, etc is GOLDEN. If you don’t know what kind of boat you’d like to purchase or if you’re definitely going to make it part of your lifestyle a boat club makes a hell of a lot of sense. Some merit to one of the other guys suggesting just renting one ad hoc, however, depends on how often, what kind of boat, insurance, etc. Last thing, the guys that work the docks make a huge difference with navigation and overall experience. Each location is different and if going offshore I want backup. You do need to learn how to game the reservation system as it can get busy. 8 or 9/10 experience with Freedom Boat Club in FL. The excursions all over the state with girlfriends has been well worth the cost. Come on down Rich…the weather is better!

Tbh I don’t see the fun in boats and yachts unless if it’s for utility like fishing. I get it it’s a rich man’s hobby. But like they say, the two best days for a sailor is the day he buys his boat and the day he sells it. I can’t justify the ongoing costs of owning a boat. If I wanna be on water, I’ll take a trip on a cruise. (Ngl I see it more as a girl magnet because it signifies wealth and a novel experience.) For me, it’s been motorcycling. The adrenaline, roar of the engine, zipping past everyone, is all worth the risk and small maintenance of keeping a motorized bike.

If you want to enjoy boating without the costs, try sailing. Used boats in the 30-35 range can be had inexpensively in comparison to their motorized counterparts and they are plenty roomy. Boats of this size usually have bow and stern sleeping quarters, a full galley and head/shower. No, they are generally not fast but you can comfortably spend a weekend on them and they don’t break the bank. (My 30 footer served as a sort of weekend lake house.) And let’s not forget you’ll understand wind and water better by learning to sail.

Sounds like it time for you to look into bareboat chartering. I was really considering the boat club but, coming back before enjoying the sunset is not an option for me. Last year I sold my sailboat and miss being on the water but, don't want the expense anymore. I've done the bareboat chartering in the Bahamas and it was great, load up with your provisions and go for a week or two. This ended up to be cheaper than sailing my own boat down, fees fees fees. I wouldn't be surprised if powerboats could be chartered without captains. Thank you for this informative video, sure saved me valuable time and energy.

Interesting comments from up north. I live in Florida. I have owned several marinas, yacht dealerships and service companies. I have a USCG Captain’s license. Boat clubs are good for learning if boats are your thing, if you are considering a future purchase or how to properly learn about boats - usually by trial and error. The boat club boats we serviced typically had prop issues and rather regularly, impeller (cooling) issues, typically from running in shallow water and not having the experience. Here, in Florida - particularly in my part of the state - the weather is fairly consistent day to day. This video is good information from a novice. To gain more knowledge, get to know, and speak with a large boat (35-50 feet) owner, as they have probably worked their way up in size over the years. Be safe, respect the boat, respect others on the water, respect the environment and have fun!

Hey bubba if your looking to get into boat ownership make sure it’s a boat you will use ! I have owned boats ( bassboats ) all my life . I see a lot of people that use their boats only 2 time or so per year . I live in California and fish the delta , my boat is on the water 2 time per week . Things I look for in a boat are multi purpose , it needs to be a good platform for fishing and also need to be fast and fun to drive . When fishing is slow you can fire up that 225hp outboard and go for a rip . Take you time and see if the water is the place for you . Honestly I don’t know how nonboat people live life . Not being on the water would be a horrible existence in my case . Enjoy your experience. There is no better way to get completely away from it all .

He said 50% of his bookings were cancelled on him. This was for a cost of $4000 down and $450/mo. He also said the boats are booked out up to 5 days and when your day comes it it might be raining. Just rent if you are new to boating!

A 21' boat with a 150 hp for $90,000? Seems high. You could get a 23' Chaparral with a trailer, for quite a bit less than that. And no, not likely you are breaking 50 mph with a 150 on that. Maybe they put a governor on it , maybe they don't, but topping 50 with a 150 would be a tall order. A boat club is a smart option for the reasons he has stated, and make a lot of sense for a lot of people new to boating.

boat clubs are great for other people , however it is not for me. I have always owned my boat and there are no restrictions. Yes owning a boat is costly (repairs, insurance ,maintenance, etc.) but I still find it more expensive to be part of a boating club. It is kind of like renting and spending a lot of money for something that doesn't belong to you. I understand that people like to pay for convenience, but how convenient is it? You have to book in advance if is available, if not your out of luck. Weather factors, time limits, monthly fees, and at the end of the day you own nothing. It makes more since if you dont have a boat ,just go to a marina and rent a boat for a day. How many times could you do that for $4000 ( the up front fee to join a club )? not to mention $400 a month. They offer daily rentals at every marina.

If you have a place to store a boat on a trailer doing this boat club does not make any sense at all. I own a $22,000 boat and it's $70,000 for the absolute gold coverage for the boat and the trailer on and off shore. My payment every month on the boat itself is $320. If you were to be in that boat club for over 5 years you just bought yourself a boat with the trailer and now own it if you did what I just said

You are doing it wrong. Boat insurance in most countries is $50 to $250 per year... Depending on the size and the hp of your boat. And if you got a place to put it, like the driveway at you house or an empty lot you can use, storage is free.

At the end of the day! $$ is irrelevant if you want convince!! Buy a boat use it the slip/storage is just the cost of enjoyment! You can sell it in 3-5 years recoup 50% of vessel cost. Time/$$ can’t make more time!! Always make more $$!!

My last boat was a 28' 2006 Chapparral Cabin Cruiser. It had an 8.1 496 in it with a bravo 3 drive. Bought it for $32K with a trailer. Drove it around 15 mins to a cove and hung out all day. Here were my costs to own that boat. Daily fuel $40.00 $120-$150mth Slip fees $2,500.00 Dry dock storage for winter $800.00 Winterization /shrink wrap $700.00 Payment $375.00 Yearly maintenance approx $3,000.00 Engine, drive, canvas, cleaning supplies, lines, fenders etc So my boat was right around $12,500.00 per year to own and operate.

Then with every "membership" there's always a member who's bad news. The pig who leaves a dirty boat, out of gas and or dented or damaged. The member who uses the boat more than his fair share of time, a member who doesn't pay his bills and on and on. Just adds to the other members problems. Count me out.

Yeah, but who cares if that douche bag leaves it dirty and empty on fuel. When I get on it it has been cleaned; basically fully detailed and topped off with fuel. No issues. And most of these boat club memberships have service centers where they are constantly repairing anything that is faulty immediately. The very first freedom boat club, which is actually the oldest, here in Florida started in 1989. Now there are over 350 locations worldwide. I’d say it’s a good business. And people like it. It’s just going to grow bigger and bigger because it’s actually worth it.

So you went cheap ass on a boat, but flushed 100s of 1000s of dollars down the toilet on a flashy car? or cars should I say as you have owned a few expensive sink-holes? Your dollars wasted of high depreciation items is not sustainable, and certainly not what I'd do. I'd recommend.......... 1) Drive a normal used car and stop wasting money on cars......I drive a honda civic, but I've got 5 cars, one for each family member 2) Buy a cottage (ie NEVER depreciating real estate) with a boat house........just outside Bobcaygeon in my case, water front on Sturgeon Lake 3) Buy a 20'-25' mulit-function boat like a bow rider.......21' Legend with a supercharged Verado in my case 4) Buy other toys for the cottage too...kayaks, SUPs, riding mower and jet skis if you can Now you can go boating or relax at the cottage anytime you want....with no one controlling your fun, which is odd for an alpha to subject himself to Friends and family members BEG to come over every weekend......meaning hot babes would never be in short supply, if I was in the market for them Now you own a house in the GTA, a cottage in ultra-prime location on the Trent, 5 cars, a boat, lots of toys. That right there is reaching excellence, and everyone (including hot babes) who see that, know it. I don't even need to flaunt it. Its not my style, so I wouldn't anyway. Last step in my plan is to buy a winter home on a hot Caribbean island, with a golf course. After years of research, I've got one picked. I just need 2-4yrs more for the cash. Now that is a retirement plan. Cottages/homes for the winter and summer. Lots of toys. And I don't report to anyone. I like your videos, but not this one. I like my plan better.
