the proper way to use a no 1 leg hold trap for possums

the size 1 leg hold trap is the most popular trap used in new Zealand due to the fur trade. there are a lot of people who buy leg hold traps then call themselves trappers and use them wrong causing injury to pets, native wildlife, and possums. by setting placing and baiting these wrong even setting them in the wrong places

2:13 the other thing that you've succeeded in doing is making the animal trap shy. They learn, and one that's pulled out of a trap is going to remember it for a long while.

hi there thanks all i use is a flour and cinnamon mix one thing i learnt while running operations in different areas around new zealand is that different flavored lures work in different areas eg in this area eucalyptus lure dont attract possums the three lures i have as a selection is ( flour / cinnamon, flour /aniseed, flour / eucalyptus for leg hold traps ) ( for kill traps i use cinnamon oil bait blocks aniseed bait blocks or eucalyptus bait blocks. our fur collecting buddies also have great and genius lures they have come up with but mine is just a standard quick one that has been used for years the flour uses sight to attract them the flavor uses scent/ taste to lure them into the trap

@@tony-lq7yk DoC did some work on bird attractants & specifies permitted lures. Aniseed might be off the list due to birds. Much of what is advised by hunters is speculation. There can be a gulf between producing tallies and knowing what they are doing and what is actually happening. Some TV & much youtube advice shows this is probably increasing, it is rife among "professionals". And many have oestrogen obstinance if advice is offered, along with poor ethics and little conscience. Very good honest operators also exist, the rest give everyone a bad name. It's notable many (most?) OSPRI/Council/DOC staff are not proficient field operators & techniques are developed for idiot proofness. The good ones are a goldmine of knowledge.

When im running my line and doing a shift or gathering up I destaple with a pair of fencing pliers. Heaps quicker than hammer to remove staples.

fencing pliers are good normally what I recommend. the hammer I used was one out of a kiddy tool box so a little small oh and pink is not my colour lol normally I use my rabbiters tool which has a spike that hooks the staple out ( that hoe thing I dig the wasp nests out with that appears in a few of my videos ) that is an original tool that rabbit trappers used to use back in the day of trapping rabbits in gin traps most commonly used between the 30s and 50s

Bro just one thing is where nail it to the tree do on the chain so the possum doesn't have enough pull space

Risks damaging the chain, and makes no difference for 95% of locations anyway. Only relevant to keep them out of a holes, it actually seems to sometimes cause injuries.

I set my first traps the other day but 3/10 ended up getting set off with only some fur stuck between, how can I set the traps to avoid this from happening?

The technique shown here probably risks a moderate miss rate. Once into it using #1s hard jaws it is reasonable to expect about 1:7-8 miss rate. If averaging 1:10 missed it's either impeccable skill or a liar. The latter proliferate in the hunting game, like experts. You'll always lose a few with #1's, you can't afford teh time to be perfect and even when targeting individuals using the tricks some were simply un-cooperative. Try positioning the trap a full hand width from the tree (thumb included, and make a dent in the ground there to bed the trap into so it's firm & won't tilt, not floppy. Plate level with jaws, dog about 2mm into trigger recess. Not too heavy, or too fine. You don't need to butcher the trap by bending it to do this if it's a good brand. Don't damage the tree or the chain ring. Brian Richie demonstrates most elements fairly well. And 2 taps is all that is needed to kill, done right, although a third is ok for insurance.

You're not wrong Tony... a few idiots out there make it harder for the rest of us. I'm trapping along a river at present, while I train my 15 month old dog as a monitor dog (he love loves coming on the line and rooting out sleeping possums), try and save for a new vehicle to get bush again.... but my first week in the new area, I found three abandoned traps, one with a long dead possum in it, poor wee buggar. Cheeky little buggars though, I have a mini war going on with one that keeps taking a dump on the trap while eating its free feed, cracks me up every time. Cheers mate.

We should make an anti-vegan trap. That will help reduce the number of idiots in nz who oppose trapping.

@@BananamelonX Plenty of vegans who support trapping though. I'd say at least 95% of the one I know do, and I know a lot of them. They just won't trap for food (that's freegans)

this is the standard way used by regional councils , department of conservation and ect so not my opinion. there is more than one way to do this correctly there is more than one way todo this incorrectly. (you can drive incorrectly and still get there) I have never seen how your friend traps possums so I cant comment on that, im more targeting these people who have never done this before buy traps and end up catching peoples pets or kiwi and then trappers like your friend or I get the blame

@@tony-lq7yk The standard shown isn't high, and would invite audit quality comments by the organisations named if their staff know what they are doing (that too varies). The method wouldn't prevent catching pets or other non targets, but some are pretty hard to avoid too.
