Sukuna struggles to find the spotlight in Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season. He’s a character that’s immensely powerful and villainous. The King of Curses, The top of the food chain of JJK’s antagonistic force. Curses.
Yet, he’s underdeveloped and often far too ambiguous to leave an impactful presence in the first season.

For the screen time thing for Sukuna to be absolutely clear. I mean for Season 1. If there is any confusion at all.

You're absolutely correct. We should've had a little bit more about Sukuna as a character in season 1. I even think the same for what comes after season 1. I am a manga reader and I feel the urge to know what are the ultimate motives and ideals of Sukuna. Plus I''ve always liked your analysis of both AOT and JJK, you provide in-depth thoughts about the topics you discuss. I'd love that you make a separate content for manga readers on KZread. Best wishes.

Thank you so much for the comment and for watching my content on Aot and JJK. Know that behind the scenes we have been thinking of ways to talk about the manga. My life revolves around this manga atm. In the future in some shape or form. JJK Manga is absolutely on the cards to be up here on the channel.

Are you a manga reader by any chance? Or just anime only?? By season 2 he finally clicks. In my hour long video I spent like 15 min gushing about the bluray additions alone with his characterisation

well i do wish sukuna had more screen time in season 1 but i absolutly love sukuna i really wish he had more screen time when i first saw the title (as an absolutly huge sukuna fan and even a simp) i was ready to dislike this vid but i do kinda agree. like season 2 was perfect for sukuna just beautiful his potential was fully used unlike in season 1 i surprisingly agree with so many points but i do feel sukuna as a villian his personality is just amazing and perfect as he is evil perfect pure evil thats what makes a villian compelling like dont get me wrong ones with sad backstory aren't bad but sukuna is fun i savor every moment he is on screen

My problem with him is obviously the Sukuna cycle. By trying to establish Sukuna being strong, Gege has butchered other characters that are deeply layered for this basic “I just want the world to burn and do what I want” type of villain. To me, Sukuna isn’t even a top 3 villain in JJK so far.

@@DareToEntertainMahito, Kenjaku, Naoya. All have infinitely more depth, are more compelling and are better villains than Sukuna in my opinion. Sukuna is basically Grimmjow to me with no depth to add to his character. Also, by the time we get a Sukuna backstory, even if it is sympathetic, I won’t care because it’s too late.

Patience has dropped in viewers dramatically. Take for example, The Sopranos, where AJ (the main character’s son) has extremely minimal focus in the first 5~ seasons, pratically a background character (more accurately a plot device for Tony), but there were very small hints with his character that exploded in the final season and became one of the main focuses. With 45 min long eps, 20~eps each season, compared to 24 min eps, 24eps a season, this is a huge difference in what the creators expect from the viewers. The Sopronos expects you to be patient on this specific plotline for 75~ hours. JJK expects it for 20~ hours (to hit Sukuna in Shibuya). I really don’t think this is too much of an ask from the story, and I think it’s more about the average attension span plummeting to a couple seconds on average (due to phones, tik tok, etc). I would say that stories must conform to this new expectation from viewers, but I think it has hit the point where it is impossible for the story to be told properly in that timespan and viewers must correct their patience

Eh, i kind of like the way he isn't important until he is. He's like a ticking time bomb that we know will blow at some point and cause mass destruction, we just don't know when. Of course i have the benefit of manga hindsight, but i feel like him waiting for an opportunity, that might never come, for him to escape yuji and revive himself is a very sukuna thing to do. He's never quite felt like the mastermind type why sets up situations to his benefit but the opportunistic gambler. Also given his lack of care for the world in any meaningful sense other than his own entertainment, it makes sense to me that he wouldn't dictate the narrative as much as others. He's not particularly interested.

He struggles to find the spotlight? Are you nuts? He has some of the most hype moments in the season lol. You say he is left ambiguous but that is not the case at all. It is explained exactly what he is. He is a sorcerer from the Heian era who trashed all the sorcerers from that era and via cursed objects is now in the modern era. He is a jujutsu powerhouse, extremely malevolent and sadistic, believes in survival of the fittest and strength above all else (shown through his bemusement at Gojo not being the head of the modern jujutsu sorcerers), and sees himself as above everyone. He declares his intention to regain his power, kill Gojo, take over yuji, and shows interest in Megumi in season 1. All of which are his main ongoing objectives after season 1. Him having less screen time is simply the nature of the character. He is literally imprisoned within Yuji. He is not helpful and will outright kill everyone around him and is far too much for the protagonists to deal with in any capacity should he escape. So they don't let him out and he doesn't interact with them. I do not see how having Sukuna have a bigger role in season 1 does anything but usurp other villains (like the cursed spirits) from having their moment to shine and have their development. "Know your place...fool."

I do understand where you're coming from. And mostly agree. However I still feel that as a villian, he is lacking and overshadowed compared to others in the season. Where he could share the spotlight equally. Not to get it twisted, Sukuna is my favourite character. Again, we're told things about Sukuna being a powerhouse, but rarely see it during the first season. It's not till later in the series that we can more easily understand his character as you define. Love your in depth thoughts ❤ (We do play it up for the video)

Yeah Leon pretty much nailed it here. Many MANY shows have big villains and manage to have it so that they don't overshadow the smaller ones fine. I feel this is a case where it also would have worked perfectly as all the antagonists have their role and prominence wouldn't have been an issue.
