not all solves are filmed as people usually have to choose to get their solves filmed and have someone film them, also fun fact not only can timers glitch, but the displays can also sometimes be broken so the display time isn't always accurate. In addition, displays aren't officially required in competition, but they are usually there. Another issue is with people who film themselves using a table tripod, which won't guarantee the time to be visible due to angles and stuff.

Also it's better timer for cubing than "official". IRC it's based on Arduino. Also official can be modded with regular plugs like tamya to accept LiPo

Review the footage, look at the timer one frame before the timer got hit. Then since it usually records at 60 fps you add 1/60th of a second to get the most accurate time.

I'm surprised that the competition standard for timers looks like a '90s gadget that was built in someone's garage. With cubes so advanced they use maglev, you'd expect timers to be way more advanced too

comp organizers should put a folded pice of cardstock right under the batteries in the door so they don’t come loose

It's not the Competitor's fault, it's the Designer's fault and they deserve a proper redo ffs.

stackmat timer displays also have issues and don't always display the correct time, so unless they filmed specifically the timer it won't work

Yes, I am a dnf shipper. yes, you can still shut the fuck up. in this video, DNF means (D)id (N)ot (F)inish.

A solution to this is to have all cubes be smart cubes that hook up to an electronical timer so that way no matter what whenever the cube is solved it sets a time and there's no rough hitting on the equipment.

I agree ! That's why I got the Gan Smart Timer. The timer will not process anything you do for 2 seconds.

Then what you should do is organise a new tournament and advertise that the people who will go to the established tournament will be banned from this one then roll a product that will solve the issue than use that product. Better devices, less problems, heavier pockets.

​@@temkin9298that would never happen in cubing the wca is way to established starting from scratch would be nearly impossible the timers they were using before the g4s that had this problem have now been phased out for the better g5s that don't have this problem though the way the wca used to handle timer malfunctions was infuriating

Its actually quite simple just change the cell positions from beneath to side ways which will stop it from moving while a hard hit on pads. Or just can upgrade it to permanent rechargeable L-ion cell

There hasn’t been much of an upgrade to the classic speed stack timers for forever which makes me SO ANGRY and I think they would make a ton of money if the made and upgraded version

Built in rechargeable batteries, like just a lithium battery

Judges could maybe just look at the recording of the contestants and check the time just before it resets ✨magic✨

If you have a high fps camera you can find the time interval between each frame, and then to get the closest approximation to the real solve time you just have to find the last frame before the timer went to 0 and simulate 1 frame of time. This way, you might end up having added 0.0001 seconds of fake delay to the player, but it's much better than cancelling his attempt completely.

Replays and frame counting are not reasonable to do at competitions they have to work through a lot contestants and rounds within a set amount of time. Having things grind to a halt everytime this happens is not practical. They could easily though allow a redo. They would have to keep spare scrambled cubes around to enable retries, but that should be feasible.

The gan halo (although it is expensive) gets rid of this problem great! I feel like other brands should take what gan has done and change to it, the buttons don’t work for a second after a solve (or during) so that can’t delete your time plus it’s charged so batteries can’t fall out!

For something like world championships, where there is also the larger timer next to the competitor, they should be able to video record the timer and do a slo-mo replay to get the time before going to zero. For other competitions, allow for self recording over the shoulder to catch the timer maybe.

Simple math, find out when the timers become bad, then try to find a way to fix it or replace them

This is so easy to fix. All you have to do is make the entire top a start/stop and make the buttons on the side and the timer on the other side. This way, you can’t accidentally reset the time. Although this is a good idea, malfunctioning is an entirely different issue

Put a peice of paper fulted in half the size of the batters inside with the to keep them from falling out. It will break the gap causing the disconnect. Also pull the springs out a bit if its not spring based ( probably isn't) then your best next option is finding a differently brand of batter that is about 1-2mm taller. =) gl hf

So couple things, this could be easily fixed by either having a charger, a rechargeable battery that can be replaced or adding replaceable padding inside so the batteries are firmly held in place. This problem has an easy fix but it's the negligence and stupidity of the designers plus the stupidity of the competitions in regards to how they handle this situation where you get such things happening. Honestly in a competition you need good equipment not garbage that can easily malfunction and fail at it's most important job.

So who is charging everything before the competition? A better fit for the batteries is hard because the size of the batteries vary and if you get too tight, it's hard to change batteries. Really just need a capacitor on the board that can handle a brief power interruption.

Got an idea for this: Before the cuber starts they test it and see if it needs better equipment or not, THEN they let him start

The way I would stop this from happening is before you solve like while they scramble the cube your solving, replace the battery and make sure everything is going to work before you start solving!

personally im pompletely against timers they should do it like game speedruns where its recorded and timed from the first turn till the last to get a 100% accurate time

If the timer was recorded, just slow down the recording and rewatch it to see the time

In football (soccer) they sometimes check the cameras for the ref to make a decision

lodge a piece of tissue in between the batter and the cover so that it wouldn’t move, it would be a tight fit but something this simple could help it work. I did this to my psp battery as it was loose and kept dislodging every time I play.

The timer should have a few modifications made, first off, remove the pads and have them wired so that you can't shake the whole thing when stomping it, and add a memory that keeps the last counter logged in case it does... Honestly just better equipment is all you'd need
