I used to live next to a dental clinic but never talked much with the dentists. One night though, at a bar in town, one of the dentists recognized me. While shaking hands I noticed he had a Luminor on the wrist. I have to admit the first thing I said was "Is it real?". Since then, we're friends and keep in touch. That Luminor sparked a friendship, pretty cool when you think about it.

Wonderful to see your subscribers growing - I joined a few weeks back at 2k and its brilliant to see the site growing - no wonder though. Thoughtful inciteful and enthusiastic presentation coupled with no bullshit is refreshing and welcome. Keep 'em coming (Still looking at the Hamilton X Wind and still in negotiation - the dealer is working late sharpening his pencil - or at least thats what he says he is sharpening).

People used to think Panerai is the watch enthusiast's watch, next step after the Rolex Sub. But now PAM are everywhere. Here in Hong Kong, people wear a Panerai because it's a PAM, just like Rolex. It's a status symbol.

I have that exact watch. It was my first expensive piece and I love it. I wear it with t-shirts or suit. I have it on a rough brown leather strap. Got it for 3k and it's a g series. Great watch but probably a bit big for a thin wrist

I meant uniqueness from other brands. Others have been copying the design just like the Rolex Submariner, and this replica problem is which is what Jory is implying. I hope this clarification helped convey my opinion. As for the people you bump into while walking, just pay more attention to the path rather than what others are wearing, especially around corners.

Could you also say that the popularity creates a price bubble both on the retail and used market? They seem like great watches with great history and unique design but at 7k upwards, is that a bit overpriced for what you get? They seem more to be fair around the 3-5k mark if that tbh

Really tempted to get a 42mm Panerai Luminor with white dial. It’s the only watch I have ever tried on that did more for me than Rolex. I tried it alongside IWC, Zenith, Jaeger and Omega and although not looking the best in photos or videos, on the wrist it was truly epic. I’m an instant fan having tried one on; which says a lot as I never loved them at all from pictures and reading specs/comparing rivals prices.. just goes to show.

You don’t wear expensive watches to impress other people. People wear it for the self satisfaction through the sense of achievement. That is the result of their hard work, who cares if other people think it’s fake, you know it’s not.

Panerai does nothing to stop replica production. I asked the sales reps at their Beverly Hills boutique and they stated replicas are of no concern. Replicas are a concern for every brand especially if they are near perfect.

I have strong opinions about panerai but I’m probably one of the few that’s 50/50 on them. For one, I LOVE the look of the 1950s case luminors. The brushed case with the highly domed sapphire is very well done. I owned a 233; fortunately I sold it for a really good amount of money in 2012 before the secondary market crashed for almost all Panerais. The things I HATE about panerai are 1) they charge ridiculous prices for watches with average movements. 2) they put a presentation case on everything. Seriously why are you presenting a mid grade ETA with non hand finished embellishment? Even the 233 which was in house was an austere movement that was not worth showing off 3) like another brand I dislike (hublot) there are too many choices and special editions. None of them feel special because they are all basically the same look, with some minor flourish. The market has said the same thing, there are so many similar but different versions it’s confusing and prices have tanked across the board except for select rare ones like the bronzo.

To me, it's a love/hate relationship with them. To their credit, Panerai doesn't design their dive watches as copycats of practically every other diver. The big problem I've got with Panerai isn't their popularity, it's the fact that they're charging over $1-2K for a watch with an ETA movement. If they're going to charge that much, they should come up with an in-house movement (and they might have to, with Swatch cutting back on ETA sales outside the Swatch Group, unless Swatch owns Panerai, too).

Not only that, their watches are just too chunky. At least with Rolex their movements are better and they have a more elegant style. I would rather have an Oysterquartz than a Panerai.

In the general public; the apple watch wearing crowd, no one will take notice or care that your wearing a Pam. On occasion, you will run into a person in the know and they will give you a "hey, nice Pam". Rolex is another animal, most people in the know will not acknowledge your Rolex unless its vintage or a bling, bling, bling. Goodness help you if you're wearing a Patek Chrono or Perpetual; they'll run for the hills in utter shame and disgrace, lol.

Erik Warnes although Rolex does it very slowly and conservatively, they absolutely Do improve and evolve all of their watches and their movements. What Rolex doesn't do is introduce 6 new "speedmaster" variations every year, distinguish between their models based on the existence of date or exhibition back or strap colour.
