The problem with microplastics

Ғылым және технология

Plastics are important materials. They make our lives easier and are often lighter and cost less than other materials. If they are not properly disposed of or recycled, they can persist for long periods in the environment and can also degrade into small pieces that are of concern - microplastics.
This documentary explains the issues with plastics in general, how and why they are used and what the EU is doing to tackle their possible negative effects on our health and the environment.
Watch interviews with leading experts and researchers in the field of microplastics as well as representatives from environmental NGOs and industry who explain their concerns with the use of plastic in our society.

Dose the synthetic wax is a kind of microplastics? some products use “synthetic Wax” (such as Fischer-Tropsch Wax, CAS No.8002-74-2) as an alternative.

Beside the fact that a responsible handling of waste - including plastics - is necessary I think it is also necessary to put some criticism on this video: 1. What is it talking about? Plastics or microplastics? Nearly all pictures are showing plastics and not microplastics. Microplastics are defined as particles below 5mm size. The only pictures coming near to this can be seen at 0:19. The terms are mixed constantly during this video. 2. German studies show, that the main source of microplastics are car tyres. It will become interesting to use biodegeradable alternatives on this. Additionally all those people demonising plastics should consider the changes to daily life if such a source should be banned! Are they really ready to accept them? 3. At 6:20 Björn Hansen is mentioning that all those products have been put on the market 20 years ago without microplastics - so it shall be possible. Yes, thats true. At the same time we had cars consuming more petrol, slower computers, less and bigger mobile phones, nearly no LED light bulbs and so on. We call this progress to achieve better performance. How far do we want to roll back the development of civilisation? Back before industrialisation? Such an argument is not really valid. 4. There is no adverse effect of microplastics observable although many scientists are trying to find some. Maybe we should wait for reliable results before taking fearful actions. 5. The statement of Jeroen Dagevos at 7:20 is irritating. Sure many people are not aware of the ingredients daily products have. Who knows about the components and substances in a mobile phone? But are they really shocked? With no adverse effect being observable personally - where is the concern? There are a lot of (food-)products causing much more harm to a lot of people daily (e.g. lactose intolerant people). But I never heard of banning milk products! Objective and reliable statements should always make both sides clear: Possible adverse effects and loss of functionality - only both together make an informed decision possible. Being reduced just to one of these makes the approach manipulative and not informative. Reducing impact on environment and humans can be achieved by bans, but then we have to consider loss of functionalities. We have to decide about what we really want. Interestingly many comments below identify "the industry" and "the people in charge" as the reason for "the bad situation". On the other hand: Who shall solve the problems if not the same scientists and technicians? All in all the video tackles a topic that has to be discussed by society. But it has to be done in an objective way which is not really supported by this video. It is mixing up different topics and uses suggestive examples. A publication by an agency that should be dedicated to scientific evidence and objective and comprehensive information should be less manipulative.

Hi, are you a proponent of plastic consumption? Please don't be. However, I do agree with your first critique that this video is not detailed enough. But the message is what makes it important and valuable. I have to disagree with your third point because choosing products without microplastic doesn't mean we are going back to old times or the era before industrialization. Take a toothpaste or facial wash with microbeads for example. Those tiny plastics are added mostly for marketing purposes so that they can sell you products they claim to give you cleaner or smoother feel but actually don't do much difference. In fact those microbeads are so tiny that they will easily be washed away and pollute the waters. If we really have the commitment to do better, we can choose to avoid those products and use plain/natural options instead. The problem of plastic consumption is not only about pollution but plastics are produced from petroleum mining that is extremely damaging to our planet and the wildlife. There is nothing bad with improving lives by going less plastic. :)

Hi Boindil and thanks a lot for your questions and comments. You can find our replies to the questions directed to us below: QUESTION 1: What is it talking about? Plastics or microplastics? Nearly all pictures are showing plastics and not microplastics. Microplastics are defined as particles below 5mm size. The only pictures coming near to this can be seen at 0:19. The terms are mixed constantly during this video. REPLY: The video focuses on microplastics but the images include larger pieces of plastic that, when broken down, form microplastics. We have also included general images of plastic waste, a key part of the EU plastics strategy of which our work on microplastics also forms a part. QUESTION 2: German studies show, that the main source of microplastics are car tyres. It will become interesting to use biodegeradable alternatives on this. Additionally all those people demonising plastics should consider the changes to daily life if such a source should be banned! Are they really ready to accept them? REPLY: A recent project (ec.europa.eu/environment/marine/good-environmental-status/descriptor-10/pdf/microplastics_final_report_v5_full.pdf) initiated by the European Commission estimated the scale of annual releases of [secondary] microplastics emitted by (but not intentionally added to) products to EU surface waters. This study reports releases to surface waters of 176 300 tonnes per year, with a lower and upper range of 71 800 to 280 600 tonnes per year. The greatest contributors were identified to be road tyre wear (94 000 tonnes per year) and losses of pre-production plastic pellets (41 000 tonnes per year), followed by road markings (15 000 tonnes per year) and the washing of clothes (13 000 tonnes per year). Therefore, although not of comparable magnitude to total annual releases of microplastics from unintentional sources to surface waters, the quantities of intentionally added microplastics estimated to be released to the environment per year (42 000 tonnes) is not insignificant. QUESTON 4: There is no adverse effect of microplastics observable although many scientists are trying to find some. Maybe we should wait for reliable results before taking fearful actions. REPLY: Recently, the European Commission published a study (ec.europa.eu/environment/chemicals/reach/pdf/39168%20Intentionally%20added%20microplastics%20-%20Final%20report%2020171020.pdf) that provides further information on the intentional uses of microplastic particles in products and the risks they pose to human health and the environment. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has also reviewed the available evidence on micro- and nanoplastics in food (www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/4501). @@ECHA To make that clear: EU focuses on 42000t microplastics and ignores car tyres who cause the double value? Strange concept! Seems like the easy way chosen. The adverse effects of micro-plastics are still assumptions, there is no evidence, there is no causality; the assumptions base on weak correlations. Epidemiolgical studies and evidence is missing. Concerning the pictures of plastics suggesting microplastics formed: I prefer talking about the right things with avoiding mixing of different issues. Microplastics are no problem on shores while bigger plastics will be - although easy to avoid and to be removed. Peronally I like hard facts instead of manipulative use of media - I am German and I am scientist, may be I am little sensitive to manipulative reporting and prefer scientific evidence too much - not sure if everyone will agree.

@@elvytan4682 OK, Elvy, let's assume I would follow your request of banning plastics consumption at all. Then I would like to hear your alternative proposal. Are you aware of all the spots you will find plastics in your daily life? The things that functions can only be achieved by plastics? Are you really prepared for abstaining from all of them? No more plastic lenses in glasses and returning back to heavy mineral lenses? No more computers, because the base material of circuit boards is banned? No more headphones, mobiles, Television and other screens, no modern sport shoes, no more light bottle crates, no more zip ties, no more cable insulation, .... Do you want more examples? The answer to any waste problem is not ban - it is recycling. Anybody focussing on ban will fail - either because it wont work or it will destroy all modern achievments. I have a nice alternative for plastics and even metal: Let's return to stone, it worked for thousands of years living in caves with expectation of life below 35 years. Is that really what you want? Have fun with it.
