"There is no ethical consumption under capitalism" may actually be true these days. Buy used whenever possible. Shop local whenever possible, which is really really hard for rural folks like me thanks to Walmart and Amazon. Farmers markets, Craft shows, flea markets, yard sales -- good weather is here again, go unplug and shop out where you can feel what you're buying and not buy cheap crap that'll fall apart. Or... at least you won't be wasting big truck fuel and emissions shipping junk to your door.

Not to brag, but I've been rotating the same two pairs of jeans for 3 years now.

I don’t have a problem with people who buy fast fashion out of necessity. It’s the overconsumption that does it.

here is a fast fact, I don’t know if anybody remembers Groupon. I think they’re still around, but they’re like hanging on by a thread, but anyways, so when they started, they did a survey they did some research into like who really uses Groupon and surprisingly a decent majority of people that used Groupon were people in the top like 10% and the reason is is because they love cheap shit. The problem is is that when especially the Groupon example those people never went back to that store or whatever used it again because they were just looking for a deal so they weren’t gonna promote it or whatever. this also happens with a lot of this fast fast fashion stuff and what’s worse is that it never even gets reused or thrift that it just gets thrown away it’s just a mess plus I think part of the problem two is I think especially I’ve seen this with Amazon is that you can’t really try it on someone until you get it you don’t even know and a lot of times you’ll get it in the mail and you’re like oh my God this is I could barely wipe my inner what with this it’s just terrible and it really is. I mean I see this in a lot of furniture too and a lot of things actually just furniture that was a silly thing to say .

I see lots of bloggers aggressively pushing Quince lately so here's my two cents. Yes, the fabrics are actual cotton, linen, etc., and not polyester. But that's really it. The quality is still pretty poor and the fabrics are paper thin. I ordered linen pants from them and had to return them because they were almost see-through - it's like not wearing any pants at all. Same goes for their shirts and sweaters - very thin fabrics, not very well made.

I bought a pair of work pants from Quince a couple years ago mostly because I was struggling to find work pants I liked other places and loved the price. After a few washes though they were already showing wear that they were cheaply made.

Same here. Occasionally, a trend will intersect with my personal style, and that's fun while it lasts. And, I'll happily wear clothes that don't really fit my personal style, if they're comfortable and practical. Being "on trend" or even faithfully following a personal style isn't as important anymore.

My mom was so good at this as I was growing up. She would give me a spending amount for back to school and spring/summer clothes… it always had to have good quality basics that could be worn different ways and maybe one or two trendy items. I would have to go through my drawers and closets to see what I had and what I needed and make room. I didn’t really get much in between. She would also dye all of my black clothes during the year or change a color of a shirt and make some long sleeved shirts into short sleeved shirts and pants into shorts(all by hand). I have slipped away from this a bit and got caught up in the fast fashion. Thanks for this post and reminders!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

So glad your raising awareness on this issue! I've developed an allergy to synthetic fibers so I had to get rid of everything synthetic and only wear cotton, hemp and linen! Minimized my wardrobe significantly.(donated or gave to friends the synthetic clothes) So much better for the environment and so much better quality. Now I have an easy timeless wardrobe as well!

I am absolutely LOVING this segment on your channel! I truly appreciate how much information you pack in these videos and how widely you apply the subject, ex: a fast fashion video where you also cover cheap furniture, HOME construction, airplanes… it’s truly incredible! I feel like I should be paying to watch this!

We need to remember that say we have multiple weddings in a year, it’s so easy to take a solid colour dress and add accessories; jewelry, purse, shoes, belt and using different types of cover ups you may have already to change up the look and you end up with 5 totally different looks! ❤

Karen Millen's quality never dissapointed me. But many brands are hit and miss... the point is to go, read the materials on the label, touch it and make your decision.

I’m so glad it’s different for men. I wear jeans and T shirts, polo shirts, and long sleeve button downs. That’s it. (Other than flannel and canvas shirts for cooler weather. Great video Shelby!

I honestly really try to buy EVERYTHING second hand. I just don't think even the more expensive/"higher quality" stuff is made to last these days

I also want to add that renting an outfit or dress is a great option especially for special occasions like weddings, birthdays, graduations, etc. The price is usually way cheaper, you don't have to commit to an expensive piece you'll only wear once and it's also a fun opportunity to wear something designer if that's your thing. :) I'm renting some dresses for my engagement shoot and can also confirm that it's way less stressful than shopping for the "right" outfit.

Shopping at a CONSIGNMENT store saves time! It’s better organized and curated! I also get stressed from big thrift stores cause it takes so much time.

I had noticed you wearing your outfits more than once. It makes you seem more relatable. I think you should do a vlog on Malls and why they are all closing. I live in Michigan and all our Malls are closing. They plan to tear down a perfectly good mall near my house and it is so sad. I refuse to buy clothes online because they never look like right and sizing is an issue. I have been buying more and more second hand thrift clothes because there is no place to shop anymore. I’m a long time viewer and first time commenter from Australia. I honestly think that you needed to demonstrate a bit more self awareness in this video regarding fast fashion purchases… it is great to share this information but a more meaningful way to encourage ethical and environmental lifestyles would be to practise what you’re preaching in this video. You have a substantial following and powerful platform, so modelling a more conscious way of living would be more impactful (including but not limited to mindful shopping habits, disposable takeout food etc).

I've never shopped for a trend or with fast fashion before. I have noticed that I cycle through my clothes in my possession depending on the season. There are certain tops I gravitate towards in my closet when it's autumn nearing winter (because temperature), and then I get super excited for spring and summer to wear my cute dresses in my wardrobe. It's like seeing an old friend when I wear them again for the first time after months have gone by. I find this to be what works for me, but obviously, this wouldn't work for everyone because of different climates and people's priorities when it comes to clothes.

I loved this topic Shelby! I also live in LA so I have felt the same pressure you have to keep up with trends/look like the cool girl while out and about. After a certain point though, it felt like it was disingenuine to myself and my preferences when it comes to my personal style. Unless an item really speaks to me and I feel like it's something I really love/can wear for a long time, I won't buy it! Also your point about online shopping and the convenience is spot on, it's become too easy to just buy something without thinking and then it becomes such a hassle to get it returned/your money back. This video definitely reinforced how fast fashion/overconsumption negatively impacts not just consumers but society as a while. You made some awesome notes that I'm definitely taking into consideration when shopping going forward!

Hi Shelby, I always like and appreciate your informative videos but this one has been my favorite so far! Im a graduate student in Boston (kinda a pricey place to be) and obv (like most students) have lesser money to spend on items like seasonal and "in" clothes so you popularizing reuse in clothes and other material really vibed with me. I'd also like to add that some of the "need to buy clothes" feeling is borne from the fact that a lot of clothes retailers have rewards programs (for example Macy's, Holister, etc) where you get reward points each time you buy and at the end of accumulating a certain number of those reward points we get a free top or something like that. I think this reward system creates a positive feedback loop among customers and while it may not be the sole cause of fast fashion, it definitely is a catalyst. Thank you again for making these videos, there is always something to learn from them! 😃👏

I've never been one to follow trends too closely and while I'd love to be able to thrift shop, being a plus-sized girlie, it is difficult to find clothes my size (I live in Asia and it is epecially challenging to find non fast-fashion brands that cater to plus-sized bodies). As an alternative, I've learned to sew my own clothes and to repair my worn out clothes as much as possible. Otherwise, whenever I do shop at fast fashion brands, I do try to find pieces that are made of natural materials and that I would most likely wear more than once.

amazing topic/ points! i’ve never been into trends, i’m a classic wardrobe style person where most of my items are timeless and i wear them again and again. I just make sure to spread out the times i wear them, and if it’s been on instagram already, then i wear it on an occasion where i’m not anticipating important pictures and stuff like that, which i know is silly, but hey, i can never wear something just once! when i buy clothes it’s cause i love each item so much! i think of my closet as a collection. and i NEVER throw anything away, the few items i declutter are usually still in great condition and i have a thrift style event where i tell all my younger girls cousins and sister in law to come and take what they want. rarely anything is left. there’s no reason to not rewear clothing. great video!

I'm shopping on Ebay and even at some thrift stores for a lot of my clothes these days. Older well made clothing actually lasts, even stuff made 15-20 years ago. So sad a lot of clothing made today is fast fashion junk that falls apart after a year or so. BTW, those of the landfills full of clothes are shocking.

I know that this seems weird and not the norm, but I prefer to dry my clothes outside when the weather is good. I've noticed that I don't need to replace my favorites very often because unlike using an electric clothing dryer which makes fabric thinner, the sun dried fabric retains quality and clothes last longer. I also save money by using this method by cutting down on electric usage during the warmer months.

A good rule of thumb is just to avoid polyester altogether. I have like 3 outfits and I always get compliments. I wear my clothes til they fall a part then still try to find ways to fix them lol. Find what works and stick with it!

Yes! When I learned polyester is what makes things pill and makes you sweat and is literally like wearing plastic I've started avoiding any clothing with any sort of polyester. It's the worst!

I like that you "skipped the trend" on the denim skirt. That was one trend that I saw and immediately thought, "that will only be trendy for a season." So, skip the trend. If it's still "trendy" in six months or a year and it's still something you really want, then go for it. Also, I stopped looking up outfits on Pinterest. I'll still be shown an outfit on there once in a while, but it isn't taking over my feed like it used to. That helped me a lot.

I will say, I do think that neutrals are kind of a trend in itself right now with the “quiet luxury”/“old money aesthetic”. I agree that these type of clothing pieces I usually think of lasting forever but i’m interested to see if the next trend is bold/bright colors, like a 80s resurgence lol. these fashion companies are smart at making us want to buy more 😂

Ok, here it is....... Dear Shelby, this video is everything I imagined you saying and way more! Thank you for not only finally addressing my inquiry but devoting an entire half hour to it! :) I agree 100% with everything you said and you brought up a lot of points I either do not give enough consideration to or I actually never thought about. For example, I know about sweat shops but until recently I never really understood the ethical aspect of fashion such as the waist from donating and the percentage of clothes that ends up in land fills. I did see a documentary about that and was stunned to see that. That has been one of my main excuses for buying because I donate a lot. I am flabbergasted about the reality of my unintentionally wasted efforts! I previously thought you had a reasonably well thought out reason for your wardrobe but I am so impressed about the array of aspects you included in this video. You talked about so many important topics and gave excellent examples and details. You put together all of the bits and pieces that pertain to fast fashion into one very comprehensive document that addresses valid aspects of why the unnecessary purchase of clothing is completely and justifiably inappropriate. I’ve always wondered about your thought process behind the way you dress because I think you and Monica dress so plainly and wear little color YET you both always look very beautiful. I noticed your sense of style from the moment I started watching you both and after time your style has evolved in the most basic and still interesting way. I have been incredibly curious about it. I have found your sense of fashion so uncommon particulary for women your age and as you mentioned also from what I have heard about the style in LA. Let me make clear, I love your sense of fashion very much, on you, but I can not figure out how to make that work for me. I love how you look so pretty in the very neutral palette, interchangeable and timeless. I think you always look put together, very classy, effortless and smart. However, like some people have a hard time being creative, I have a hard time being simple. I was never as curious about the reason you wore the same things often because I think you do mix and match a lot to change things up and you always seem to choose the right style and color for every event. But I was curious about your apparently intensional choice of neutral colors and the way you make the most basic styles look very current. I try to focus on quality pieces and more of the idea of a capsule wardrobe. I don't buy clothes very often, but currently pregnant and the last 6 months I've had to buy nearly a whole new wardrobe for pregnancy. Amazon Maternity has been my go to because of the amount of selection and price point for this temporary time. Maternity clothes at other places are so marked up in price. Also love how you pointed out new build houses are cheaply made. In my area the new builds start at $700K-$1M and I just think of how cheaply they are made now that it's all for profit. I'm browsing houses but not planning to buy anytime soon right now. However I think I would prefer a house built in the 1950s or something, I miss the brick homes and craftsman style homes.

How bout doing away with influencers? Who are these example clips of “influencers”? They are an authority on NOTHING. They’re just pimping what a retail outlet sends them. This is extremely cheap marketing for these companies. Don’t fall for the Snake Oil Salesmen. Shelby, I give you an “influencer” pass today cuz you’re more of a content creator.

Those inspector videos scare me so much! Like I’ll probably never be able to own a house but if I do, it’s going to fall apart because things are made so poorly! 11/10 video! I genuinely hate most trends. I try very hard to stay with timeless pieces but maybe with a bit of an edge because I do love color and pattern. My favorite is when a color I like to wear becomes a trend so they actually make it in more things and then I get a couple items in that color that I will wear for a long time.

With all of your videos lately it’s like you’re reading into what I want to know about and ask myself on a daily basis lol

Even though a material is grown in nature, dosen't automatically make it better for the environment. Cotton is still a hasard to make, because it uses a shit ton of water, and because of all the chemicals that are used to color it. I am not saying i would choose polyester, or that it is better than cotton. It's just important to understand, that none of the textiles we make are good for the climate - Especially because we make so much of it. There is no good choice when it comes to choosing the individuel textile, if you want it to be "climate friendly" or whatever. So it's better to choose a material that you know is going to last for a long time, depending on the style of clothes you are buying. Just like you said Shelby with activewear. The most surreal part of fast fashion for me is that nowadays a whole shirt ist cheaper than a little bit cheese or a bag of apples at the grocery store.

I love going to open house seeing the new houses in the new subdivisions that pop up. But man if you really look at them quality not there. Custom cabinets made of pressed fiber board that’s just been painted to conceal it. I don’t know how to explain it but they feel light.

Me and my husband were fortunate enough to buy a new home in 2021 and we are thankful for it every day. HOWEVER the house is made so terribly. The amount of beer cans found during construction was repulsive and to this day I’m still finding poor quality/material in the build. Builders higher cheap labor and cheap materials to throw up houses

I've been wearing the same 3 pairs of jeans for 3 years, same with shorts. Shirts is a bit worse but it was tough for me to find decent fitting male t-shirts. Sweaters are 5 year minimum but usually after 2 years they become work sweaters that get abused.

I can remember when a pair of Levis would last 10+ years, and then they were nicely faded 👍 . Good luck Shelby 🌹 💞 🐨

An Australian breakfast show personality (male) wore the same blue suit for a year and no viewers noticed/commented. However the female personalities, if they re-wore an item of clothing, viewers would write in to complain. It's sad that males can get away with wearing the same things over and over again but as females we have the pressure to wear something different every single time. That said, I have more of a capsule wardrobe and cycle through my 'event' clothing and rarely buy new items but I do buy quality pieces and not fast fashion. Total side note - that pink Zara top: that material, just iron it and it stretches right back out. I totally agree with you in this video though, and have made a total change in how I shop over the last few years! I also just don't like to spend money on things I just know I won't wear for long. Quality over quantity every time.

Love love love this! I love that you are significantly younger than me (I'm 35 going on 36) and we aim for dressing the same. What maybe when I was 15 I'd think of myself of a "grandma" for wearing only neutrals (black, white, beige, grey), which now I think is more "chic". I see this Gen Z wearing all these crazy stuff and super colorful and cringe because it used to be the same trend when I was a teenager.

I have a few well made pieces from the 1980s that I still wear! Quality has gone down for sure. We used to pay a lot more compared to our income for clothes back then. I think a lot was still made in USA. When things started getting made over sea it was for profit/competition.

Im glad I don't care about my clothes, luckily is everything from biz casual to flip flops and gym shorts. Ive been wearing the same free tshirts for almost a decade now from tech conferences, even sewed my jeans the other day after they had a rip in the middle seem 🤣

Agree with a lot of what you said, skip the trends! But also if you love colour and pattern, buy it and wear it. You can get sick of neutrals too if they are not your style or how you wish to express yourself in the world. Buy clothes that fit you well and that you love.
