Thank you all for watching. I just thought I'd mention it because some people have commented that the video is 'faked' or 'set-up' to pretend my initial plan didn't work out. I'll quote the response I left on a comment about it: "The drone crash, the script falling apart, the lamenting over how I didn't know what to do - that all happened over the 4 days I had in Iceland to shoot this. It led to me having to rewrite what I had during that time, in the hopes that I could find something else that resonated with me. I wrote new scenes, shot new b-roll and tried to keep a narrative thread going, but from the drone crash on; all shots were improvised on location. Had my initial plan worked out then the last 2/3rds of this video would never have seen the light of day." If you want more info, a longer write-up with pictures and links can be found here: drive.google.com/file/d/1riuW5ShFiMsv5oLb340zykoVWe8uoBsG/view?usp=share_link

I feel like having people say that the video and it's premise are "faked" or "set-up" is some of the highest praise in this context. That means what you salvaged was such a high quality production, so well crafted and high fidelity that people are struggling to buy into the idea that this was all born of the genuinely tragic experience with the drone and script in the filming of this video. Even when CATASTROPHES happen in production, people have a hard time believing it isn't just another planned part of Timmm's meticulously crafted cinematic experiences. Genuine tradgedy, self-doubt, and anxiety strike. Money and time is lost and everything falls apart and Timmm STILL. Can't. Miss. Unstoppable mad lad. One of the best on this platform. :]

The parallels between you feeling frustrated with your initial plan and the wider industry being confounded by Death Stranding is a really wonderful little message. The point about finding not what you were looking for, but what you needed, even more poignant in that. Please, don't ever stop your content. I'd be heartbroken! This stuff is gold!

I passed my first semester of college just about a month or so ago, been living in an apartment with a broken car waiting to be fixed. I found your videos to be calming and always incredibly in depth over everything you spoke about. You posted today and I got excited, and frankly today what you spoke about was genuinely enlightening. The expectations, seeking the next big thing, finding technology and ways to just take a step back and reclaim time. Trying to find a job in a bustling city I've had far too much time on my hands, running away from it, seeking distractions. But today you kind of changed that, I realize now it isn't so awful to just take a step back and reflect. A like and a comment isn't enough, and seems ironic regarding the subject, but thank you.

The fact that these companies get so butthurt about the devs getting more recognition and fame, actually getting the widespread credit they deserved for being the creators behind the things we love, is so heartbreaking. That devs get punished and retaliated against for not being some quiet, nameless worker in the crowd. Owning nothing they've worked on even if it's not used in the game, everything locked being NDAs so they can't even use it in a portfolio! No wonder so many quit the gaming industry, or if they're lucky, go indie. Tim, I think this video is wonderful. It gives a honest view into the creative prosess and how things never goes as planned. Sometimes for the worst, sometimes for the better, but we'll never know since we simply have to keep walking forward or els waste the time we've spent by stagnating in place. But every experience is a step forward on whatever journey you wish to take on next. Can't wait to see it

I spent most of the video convinced that the narrative was written and presented as intended, the parallels to what Kojima might have felt embarking on his new project, trying to present a masterpiece to the world and his fans was too perfect in my mind. In the end this might not have been what you envisioned, but It resonated incredibly well. For me Death Stranding was a tough pill to swallow, the slow purposeful nature of it was so different to what I expected from games. I initially gave up 8 hours in, just before the end of Chapter 2. I didn't touch the game for 4 years, and when I got the urge, the Directors Cut came out (a happy accident). In the end I came to appreciate the experience, I even lamented not walking more (I opted for the speed and cargo space of vehicles for most of Chapter 3). Great job salvaging the video, I think it's better for being broken. Kintsugi truly is an art.

Gosh, this channel is the definition of style over substance. And I mean that in a good way. You have the most style of any creator on this platform. If you put even a little effort into storytelling (instead of being another video essay channel) you'd blow up so big. But there's something really artsy and cool about watching someone just flex their style, substance be damned.

TIMMM is like, the Sam Lake of the videoessay genre. Normally, you'd just narrate an essay over greenscreen, but TIMMM films an entire movie instead. I am blown away by every single release. tbh there is nothing more Kojima to me than video about a video about a videogame with self-commentary p.s. no disrespect to greenscreened essays meant p.p.s. DS is an amazing game and I spent 120 hours delivering packages and building roads for fun, instead of finishing the story.

You wanted to create a masterpiece. Instead you created something and put all of yourself into it, giving us a piece of yourself. Experiencing this piece of you, reading through comments and experiencing everyone giving their own thoughts, their own piece to it and ultimately adding my own feelings, a piece of me to it, gave the possibility to create a masterpiece that's unmistakably you. I don't think Kojima ever intended to create a masterpiece, I'm sure he doesn't even consider any of his games a masterpiece but he likes to create. And when he creates he puts all of himself into it, all the things he loves, the connections he made, elements that resonate with him right now and then. Everyone can make a stealth game, everyone can make a masterpiece but nobody other than Kojima can make a Kojima game. I feel the same about your videos. They are so genuinely filled with yourself and I think that's absolutely beautiful. Thank you for giving us a piece of yourself. I value that more than a masterpiece

Wow I uh I'm not sure I can articulate how much I loved this Setups and payoffs, framing, research and brilliant storytelling A certain emotional honesty, or is it? After all, given it's a video on Kojima taking inspiration from Kojima, how do we know the masterpiece version even existed and this isn't it xD A beautiful cyclical script ; that may sound negative but in the sense that it isn't just setups and payoffs, it's reading us the end of the excerpt of Homo Ludens' foreword, before finishing of the video with it verbatim, references and quotes, intermingling for the entire duration It's a beautiful piece of art and I love it, and inconceivably better than what I expected going in As one might say in the context of the world you explored, keep on keeping on

I still sincerely believe Death Stranding was a genuine misstep. A production with some merit, signficant beauty, and some classic Kojima "profundity" (your mileage varies on that one), but an overall miserable slog. At the end of the day, the merits you ascribe to the game, I feel can be accomplished from a walk in the woods or nature preserve, something along those lines. It's worth keeping in mind however, that not everyone has that luxury. That being said, it's the parts of the video that are not about Death Stranding that kept me hooked, that got me thinking. So, I wanted to share one thought. This video, the one that was actually produced, is a new thing. Novel in it's own way. You certainly have a signature style and it shines through here but it doesn't change the fact that THIS video could not have happened without the tradgedy that befell you in the filmmaking process. Sure, we would have gotten the original video, with all the interesting narratice crafting that I'm sure many of us would have all loved, but we would then be in a world without this video. You communicated so much in this video through the explanations and explorations of said tradedy that could not and would not have been communicated with your original video. This isn't an inferior product to compare to the original vision. It's apples and oranges. Both fruit, both delicious, but they are doing something significantly different from one another. The prerequisite for this composition to exist was for the first vision to die. Sad in all the ways you described, certainly. But it's not a hypothetically better composition to comparre this one to. It was one of the pieces in this production you crafted. That is what made this video something more and something different than what you could have otherwise produced, and it's beautiful. For it's own reasons... "or something."

What people complain about is not necessarily the problem with the game. It's like when people say "this game is repetitive", well yeah, every game is, but it doesn't bother you if you enjoy it otherwise. Death Stranding has many flaws, mainly in writing and mechanics. If people would be drawn into the story for example, then the flaws of it would be much less visible. But since the story is so fractured, and for like half the game almost no question gets answered, and the NPCs are behaving like aliens who never saw humans, people have trouble getting attached to anything in DS. Also, it wasn't properly marketed as a walking simulator before its release, we only got some criptic cinematic trailers about it. The negative reviews are not necessarily just about the game, but also the implications about it that Kojima failed to address. The Long Dark for example never tried to hide behind anything, it was clearly a walking simulator + survival game from the beginning, and players knew that. Add to this other problematic design decisions, like backpack upgrades being highly restricted, never letting the player go crazy with them. Portable music player not being available during the story. The game default being that the player is getting spammed with other players' structures to a point where you barely have to build anything yourself. The problems with Death Stranding are very much within Death Stranding.

I don't think I have ever been more excited to discover a new creator. From the cool and stylish thumbnail, to the evocative title and great subject, everything attracted me to watch this video. 5 minutes in and I exclaim: “This is my new favorite YT channel. This dude has style! Let’s go!“. I was already planning to watch every single one of your videos. 20 minutes in and I don’t want to watch another minute of this video anymore, but I will just so I can leave an informed comment. The forced parallels between your “misfortune” and Death Stranding's reception was so ham-fisted I physically cringed. You’re not a good actor, so pretending you had this whole misadventure that you definitely did not plan for, but conveniently had the tape that perfectly framed it all, was less charming and just incredibly forced. Clearly you know what you're doing from a visual standpoint. Also you have a lot of money to burn If you could go to Island, even if it wasn't specifically for this video and maybe you were already on vacation or doing something for work, whatever…that’s a lot of money… But the mediocre writing and god-awful acting makes this video feel completely fake and disingenuous.

Just finished the video, and gotta say I'm a bit disappointed. When you started off the video it was obvious this was just gonna be another Timmm™ video. Wax poetic about something for a while with beautiful shots of the outside and recounting a bit of video game history. Then you did something really cool, which was introducing reality. The part about the drone breaking and you being upset with the cellphone footage felt genuine, like it actually happened and it threw a spanner into your plans of making a video. Now, for me as a viewer, it made my ears perk up and pay more attention... until I realized it was just a ruse to setup the rest of the video, which honestly just comes off as manufactured. There's no humanity in something orchestrated to bait emotion, at least not to me. It's like a sandwich that's all salad. I wish you would put some personal stuff in, like how the game has had an impact on you, what you disliked about it, rather than just talk about the cultural impact. I'm here on this channel for you and your thoughts, and while I can appreciate the shots and the talking head segments, it feels a bit like filler most of the time; or it's just not punchy or interesting enough to warrant it's inclusion. Idk, at this point I'm waffling on like I'm trying to reach a wordcount on an essay, but I hope you take whatever I wrote as constructive criticism rather than me trying to rag on you. I think you've got promise as a creator and I want to see you reach higher and become better, rather than settling on a mid video just so you can upload something. Also you should put your face in your thumbnails more and advertise your patreon more often.

Cheers for watching, sorry you didn't enjoy it. I don't fully understand the accusation that it was "a ruse". The drone crash, the script falling apart, the lamenting over how I didn't know what to do - that all happened over the 4 days I had in Iceland to shoot this. It led to me having to rewrite what I had during that time, in the hopes that I could find something else that resonated with me. I wrote new scenes, shot new b-roll and tried to keep a narrative thread going, but from the drone crash on; all shots were improvised on location. Had my initial plan worked out then the last 2/3rds of this video would never have seen the light of day.

@@timmm_ Sorry, I probably didn't explain myself well enough. I was under the impression that everything that was in the video was carefully planned from the get-go, and that the whole narrative was a meta take on how Death Stranding is about process of delivering, in this instance you are the porter and the route you take was forced to change due to unforeseen circumstances (like Sam and BT's, MULEs and so on). Now when I reflect on it, maybe I wasn't seeing the forest for the trees. However, I appreciate you taking the time to respond and explain and I hope my original message didn't upset you. I still value the effort you put into these videos and I am looking forward to your new projects.

This honestly felt like a waste of time. The first 30 minutes had very little of value, and after the entire episode there was frankly still little of value. It took an hour to say "This isn't Metal Gear. I don't really understand the whole idea of "Kojima tricked everyone" when everything shown was in the game and during interviews, including a couple pre-launch gameplay videos he explained what the core of the game was and that it was mostly walking around delivering packages. When it released I went with a buddy to buy the game solely because it was different. The only time you hear much about the game now is people saying they hated it without playing it until someone convinced them to try it and then they loved it.
