Perfect - the Amateur Magus talking about armchair magicians- not throwing shade , just ironic I joined a Masonic lodge and achieved MM , and that was for my personal growth - not for bragging rights -it really doesn’t matter - spirituality is a personal connection to higher being - other folk’s information is fine but it’s still a personal journey and having personal experiences . It’s about humility and losing grandiosity, not popularity contests💫

i think for me as someone interested in the occult r breaking into it is a very daunting prospect there is so much out there and no easy way to begin. not really an armchair magician but still. :p

This was a very fascinating episode. I've always considered myself an armchair occultist, but not because I consider myself to know more than others. In fact it's the exact opposite. I'm so nervous to start practicing and I live with a consistent energy drain through the lens of chronic illness. I've dreamed of doing daily Resh practices or the LBRP as it's written in the Appenix of Libere 4. This has given me things to think about and at least an urge to do something, some kind of practice daily.

The point about starting with the Golden Dawn as a system to acquaint oneself with the Western Esoteric Tradition cannot be stressed enough (IMHO). It would be interesting if you did a podcast on Israel Regardie, he seems forgotten at times.

I started to mess with Enochian summoning about two years in (not good). I successfully invoked a guardian angel. Performed the rituals at night. Went to bed meditating on the ritual. I had a 'dream' of sleeping on my couch (where I fell asleep) looking at myself lying on the couch in the middle of the living room. A black sphere about the size of a basketball was floated over me. It started to protrude at parts like spikes sticking out but with a rounded tip. It started to vibrate slowly. I was freaked the fuck out. I had the feeling of, 'you called here I am.' I was not prepared whatsoever for this type of experience, I felt like it could sense my fear. I got another feeling of almost like a sigh, "ok, don't call me again if you're not ready." I woke up and haven't touched any angel/enochian work since. Edit: On meditation. I've some of the most profound and guiding moments practicing the Middle Pillar before bed. I've made personal changes to the meditation. Instead of just a beam of light going down the middle. I've placed myself in a tree of life. The light pull up from Malkuth illuminates the leaves and they fall and shower back down to the earth. Each breath sprouts new leaves and the cycle continues.

I LOVE that you mention that some scholars DO practice but have to hide it do to the ridicule and not having their stuff being taken seriously or being looked down upon. I have two books by an academic author and I low key think that they practice. Sometimes I feel like I'm an armchair magician but I know that's my Impostor Syndrome kicking in. This year is my 12th year of being a witch. I don't cast a lot of spells and frankly that's mostly do to my mental illnesses which cause me a lot of fatigue. I'm not super into many of the popular practices that we see online. I hardly use herbs, candles, cauldrons, chalices, wands etc. I mostly use crystals, my mind and energy, art etc. I am currently wanting to incorporate some sort of ancient greek magick framework/inspiration. Last year I decided to watch Secrets of the Occult on The Great Courses streaming service and I was going episode by episode reacting to it on my IG because I wanted to rate it. The host clearly is not a part of the community which is fine and all but he was missing out on the cultural? aspect of some things he talked about. I can see your point on the fear of messing up is keeping people in the armchair. I would just tell them that our brain has a bias towards the negative and that we tend to catastrophize things and to just try it out. Yeah, in society if a person fails that person is almost a moral failure.

I’m not an armchair magician, I’m just a random Buddhist doing very VERY basic level beginner Vajrayana after I cried out to a deity once and asked for help and they responded, and then formed a great connection with them and lost it after 3 months with absolutely no background in Buddhism beforehand. And this episode was really helpful and reassuring, especially the end part where a lot of what I’m doing isn’t fancy, isn’t big, is pretty mundane and repetitive, and I feel lost, slightly worried I’ll never get to the same level of connection I had with the deity I connected with initially, wondering if I’m a terrible person, and trying my best not to fall into utter despair. Thank you.

In my experience most armchair magicians are in love with the idea of magic being real but are scared to engage in case it doesn't work. It's almost like retroactive cognitive dissonance. Maybe they tried once and their doubt caused everything to fail. If they were to try again and it weren't to work it would crush all their hopes. Because of this they simultaneously hold those it does work for in disdain while also being relieved that magic does work for some people

I briefly thought this was me since i do in fact practice in an armchair also fully reclined sometimes. I def practice more than i read tho and ya, I have had some pretty huge "oops" moments with horrible but also wonderful consequences. Fundamentals are indeed vital, Miss Rose shows her wisdom well. (edit) Ha! That quote by Crowly, yes! Cry out to the gods! Also Meditation, crying out and meditation have been profoundly effective for me.

In my golden dawn temple, we were talking about currents of initiation. I think studying all this in an organized initiatic setting is preferable especially if you are new. More importantly - you get a chance to pay your dues and have proper examination from mentors and teachers. You first need a strong foundation in the elements. Randomly spewing enochian is not going to bring any kind of structure.

Look to the East, i.e. Eastern Orthodox monastic practices. Lots of mystery there. Gnosticism is another alleyway. Early Christians and gnostics mingled together quite frequently. Hermeticism is another path to check out. A lot of those teachings ran parallel with Christianity for quite some time.

Isn't "armchair magician" a sorta pejorative or slight, even self-directed, if say one were yet to pull the proverbial trigger on any rite/ritual/goal/ceremony and still waded in the shallows, so to speak? Or maybe even the scholastically interested in the history and the keen hobbyists and collectors of books of magic who practice some here and there? 📖 📚 🌌 🌟 🔭

It can't be just coincidence that Mark Passio has been using the Dunning-Kruger effect as a learning tool on the last 5 episodes of his show that just ended. Great occult minds think alike. "Top of mount stupid." Pasdio is very frustrated and has lost all respect for his audience but if you can get beyond that it will transform your worldview and you will realize things are actually much more desperate on the planet than people even believe. 😮

Please worship the CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, THE LORD GOD and try not to worry too much about the differences between the different religions and denominations, try to think about the similarities and the things they may have in common more than the differences. Daily prayer is a fundamental part that many people do not practice although it is encouraged "CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, LORD GOD, I beg you to never force me to worship any false god or object and I ask you for forgiveness for my sins and immorality. Thank you for everything. Amen." Please pray this now, pray the words as you read them if you cannot look and remember them 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

The idea that the gods don't know you from birth is odd. In ifa you have things born with you and same with Vodun and many others as some of them are deified ancestors and our ancestors and past lives made pacts that follow the bloodline descendents and future lifes. This is also s very G D is end all be all perspective and not traditionalists being respected
