The Privilege of a Broken Heart | Mara Abbott | TEDxBoulder

The Olympics are thrilling to watch but rarely do we hear from the athletes on what their experiences are. What is it like to train to be the best in the world and what is it like to cross the finish line just missing a metal? Mara Abbott explores the idea of being the best cyclist in the world and what it means physically and mentally to be in the race until the end.
Mara Abbott was born and raised in Boulder, Colorado. She has spent the last ten years competing as a professional road cyclist. During that career she has won the women's Giro d'Italia twice and is a two time national champion. Most recently she finished fourth in the road race at the Rio Olympic Games. Off the bike she is a certified yoga instructor, a columnist for the Daily Camera and helps sort out the mushy tomatoes for Cure Organic Farm at the Boulder Farmers' Market. She is frequently to be found hauling ambitious loads around town on her commuter bike.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I realized that being broken was the best experienced of my life because it taught me how to be strong. I will not be who I am today if I he didn't broke my heart. I was lucky enough to have given a chance to find someone who deserves my heart and that was the best thing I could ever ask for.

A New Love Official I, too have my heart broken and it's devasting but it's also a unique opportunity to look deep down at yourself and invest your love on the person's who is gonna be with you forever, yourself, rather on others.many times we use relationships as a emotional crutch so that it becomes easier to deal with the harshness of life, but people always come and go, so through a heartbrek we can learn how to face life without relying on someone else's support.. and also some nice people have to leave our lives to give space to better ones... My brain knows this, now try convincing my heart..

@@ayushisharma413 your pain is same as mine though it was not 9 years but still the pain is heart wrenching. He didn't even ask his parents we are just far away from marriage but he says his parents won't agree. Even though I told him to ask once he never did. I can understand the pain of imagining your man with other women and that too they are going to be forever. Just try to move on make strong reasons to move remember he did not fight for you for the love you both have he already healed I hope so and now it's your turn it's going to take time but don't give up.

At the age of 16 when I was head over heels in love with a girl, I decided to marry her at 18. She was agree with my decision too, but at 17 when she broke my heart I tried to commit suicide but moved on later though it took me 2 years of depression. I still look back what could have been if we had got married. Today i am happy that she broke my heart and i would never be the person I am today without her. I wouldn’t be here where I stood today. I am really thankful to her

My fiance died one week after my 23rd birthday. That was almost 7 years ago now. It's only in the last two years that I've come to some peace and have taken the life lessons from that period and have built my life around those lessons. Life is so tough at times and it seems so simple to give up. Just don't forget, it does get better and if you haven't heard it today... I love you ❤❤

I guess people judged it from its cover but fine by me, this video needs you to follow her story to know how deep and strong message this video has. I'm watching it again because I believed that change is inevitable and as fast as you can you can adapt it, the better you get. I've made myself from my mistakes and I have to learn to make mistake, I'm just like that.

So moving and touching. The best Ted Talk I've seen and by far the most powerful. You embody greatness by who you are inside as a person. Loved every second of this talk and emotions ran high as I listened to your reflection and breakdown of the race. Nothing I can say can probably uplift you. You have inspired me immensely and I'm sure you have inspired many others. But it's not about you inspiring us; it's more about us being in your corner and we wanted to see you cross that line in 1st. But nothing we can say or do can change the outcome. But in spite of that, I see much more than I ever could have imagined by how you have handled and responded. Who you are is the REAL gold medal. You truly went for it with everything you had (internal, external, etc.). Ur an absolute winner in the grand scheme of things. You've got soooo much potential for greatness in this life. I'm so glad I got to see you perform and even prouder I got to see you speak :-) Thank you for being YOU. Keep being YOU. You are truly all heart, honorable dignity and a rare and special human being :-)

+Bodien Thank you. It's truly beyond words at this point. She's a legend in the sense that because of Mara Abbott, I'm very much interested in women's professional cycling. Wish I would have been more aware in the past, I would have followed the sport more. And finally, I do not even remember who placed in Rio for her race and I don't care to know. I remember Mara Abbott and how great of a race she rode and just that incredible fire and desire. That fitness was insane and I loved how determined she was. Nothing can change the outcome, and also, nothing can change the fact that she's remembered more in that race. And not for getting passed. To me, I remember seeing the American dream play out on the TV screen. She owned the moment and just, amazing. She epitomizes greatness ☺

Mara Abbott was heartbroken to finish 4th in the Olympics ... But Annemiek Van Vleuten had several broken vertebrae during her fall! I can understand her disappointment but if Annemiek Van Vleuten had not fallen, she would be Olympic champion. So Annemiek Van Vleuten may have more regrets than Mara Abbott.

I think when you had 1 km.away from the finish line, you should have finished it off to be sure. but you were confident. At that moment, the people who were watching your competators at your back were overwhelmed and thrilled at the thought they will beat you up. You were aware of their gaze , it hinted you to put up more speed. And when you finally heard the three roaring at your side for a kill, you should have exerted the last ounce of courage instead of being demoralized looking at them. You were already the sure winner. But accident will happen.

This has NOTHING to do with a broken heart! These videos are always mislabeled. So you lost a big race!? Really? Train harder and hit it harder next time. Disappointing yes, but not cause for a broken heart surely. People with real broken hearts would probably like to hear more about that subject. Not about some cycling race. where you got caught by sprinters at the end. I have no use for this video.

Cycling has been her relationship for the past decade. She is committed to it. Loving. Works hard to maintain it. To make it grow and succeed. Yes it is the very best definition of a relationship. And she hit a low point on it. Like all relationships do, eventually. Still, it is a privilege to be able to have lived it. You certainly did not get the msg.

You love competition??? Really, this speech sounds like excuses!! Three riders beat you in the end to the podium. The last 50 meters of the race you gave up!! How embarrassing!!
