    Not quite accurate, AlphaZero will see various Stockfish moves as suboptimal, and so, if it were to map a position out to mate, it would give quite a few more moves. To add to this, AlphaZero gives board position values, but doesn't map out particular paths to my knowledge. There's no reason that it needs to know what game led up to a position, so to my knowledge it doesn't. By extension, I'd imagine it would have to be actively rigged for it to provide a measure of how many turns it would take to reach mate, as it's not an engine.

    Stockfish without an opening book is like a race car without a starter motor: sure it'll still go fast but you've already lost the race as you had to push-start the car to get it going!

    3:56 You don't have to defend. You can go Bxf7+ and draw the knight away from defense of the bishop, then capture it with the queen, which will then defend the knight on g5 in conjunction with the bishop from C1. And if the king moves you can always escape with Qd2 or Qe1

    Of course it did, the coding for stockfish mainly focuses out of the opening not the opening itself, so without an opening book it struggles.

    What’s kind of funny is that I have seen that position so many times, in tournaments and outside of tournaments in fact even online, it’s not an uncommon position I’m not sure why there’s only one game in the database with it. I’ve personally played it a few times.

    Get well soon! Many people are sick right now, me too. :) Thanks for your great commentary and over all design and fun stuff, like the quotes! It was a welcomed surprise, that AI beats standard programs, if we play like the AI, we can bet Stockfish. ;) Most games I analysed thus far, the AI always tends to make the opponents pieces less useful, like blocking them in the corners or such. It's all about control and position, not just material.

    hey friends ^^ I wanted to know, what are 'opening books'? Agadmator mentions it at the beginning of the video talking about other matches between sockfish and alpha; the only game alpha struggled in was when stockfish had access to opening books. Are they just special databases only about chess openings?

  • @lukewatson8848

    @lukewatson8848

    Right-o my friend, it is thousands of different openings, and suggestions of what to play to counter them, they are called "books" because they used to only be found in physical copies, however, you can now find online databases.
