The Prince of Egypt Review: Is it Biblically Accurate?

Hey everyone, Justin, here. I thought this week I would do a movie review of the Prince of Egypt. I absolutely love this movie so it was a blast making this.

    I really like how, despite showing the differences between the movie & Bible, you didn’t rip the movie apart and spoke about its qualities. This movie is the most faithful and respectful adoration of a Biblical story I’ve seen - probably won’t get anything like this again. But yes, I love all the insight you gave! Poor Aaron always gets limited. I may not remember correctly, but didn’t Moses have a stutter and that’s why Aaron did a lot the speaking for him? Thank you for this great video!

    There's actually the possibility that the woman who finds baby Moses is still Pharoah's daughter in the movie (or rather, technically, his daughter-in-law). Seti only reigned for about 15 years, so it's likely that he wasn't Pharoah yet at this point in the story, and his father was.

    15:50 My interpretation is that he asked for Pharaoh to let the people go permanently right from the start. Notice that the first thing he says to Pharaoh is "Let my people go, so that they may worship God." He doesn't say it's for a certain amount of time, he just says to let them go. Period. After Pharaoh refuses, then Moses says, "Let them go three days into the wilderness," and Pharaoh still refuses. While you could interpret this as Moses clarifying that he meant it to only be for three days, my interpretation is different. To paraphrase, it's basically, "Can my my people be set free?" "No way." "Well, then can they at least go into the wilderness for three days instead." "No. They have to stay here." My interpretation seems more legitimate, because I don't see what Moses would accomplish by asking for only three days right from the start. The plan was for them to go free.

    It really confused me when you said the song of Moses cause I think we (I'm a Hebrew speaker) call it the singing of Miriam (maybe I'm wrong). Also its always weird for me to see this movie in English cause I saw it in Hebrew and because of the origin it, well... makes sense? I actually didn't know it had part of the song in Hebrew so that's cool

    You're right, it is really confusing. I have heard Exodus 15 called "the Song of Miriam," "the Song of Israel," "the Song of Moses," "the Song by the Sea," and "the Song of Israel and Moses." It really just depends on what Bible version you look at and what the heading for that chapter says. In the HCSB version it says "Israel's Song," in the NASB it says "the Song of Israel and Moses," in my Stone edition of the Tanakh and my Schottenstein edition of the Torah they say, "the Song by the Sea," in my ESV it says "the Song of Moses," and my TLV says "the Song of Miriam and Moses." There is another passage, probably more commonly known as the "Song of Moses" in Deuteronomy 32.

    The movie is from DreamWorks which was founded by three people -- one of whom is Steven Spielberg ( I believe the SKG seen on some movies stands for Spielberg , Katzenberg, Geffen) The reason I bring this up is because I believe the spoken ,/ sung Hebree parts may be due to Spielberg. It does have a disclaimer in the beginning about some license having been taken with the story

    Actually the pharaoh at the time when Moses killed the Egyptian was not the same pharaoh when Moses returns as the Bible mentions that the pharaoh from that time had passed away. So for all we know that "good relationship" with the new pharaoh could still have been possible

  • @olivierdubreuil-gagnon2201
    @olivierdubreuil-gagnon22013 жыл бұрын

    Maybe it's a bit too late, but I thought the Bible said that the man who wanted Moses dead was dead himself and replaced by his son, which is the entire reason why God tells Moses to go back now of all time, which would mean that he had a terrible relationship with his father but not necessarily his brother.

    If we read the "Book of Jasher" we get a very illustrative picture of moses and his life. If it´s true or not we can´t tell of course, so read it trough the lens of the bible. It paints Moses as a great person in Egypt, which may be where the writers of this movie got some inspiration from. Because in the bible we get no clue on to what his role in the house of Pharaoh was. Chapter 70 : "50 And the Lord was with Moses and his fame went throughout Egypt. 51 And Moses became great in the eyes of all the Egyptians, and in the eyes of all the children of Israel, seeking good for his people Israel and speaking words of peace regarding them to the king." This was before he slayed an egyptian, according to the text in his young adulthood. He was 18 when he fled, according to the books of jasher. And also, in the book of Jasher we se a long time-span between him going to the midianites and fleeing from Egypt. In that time he, for example, ruled over the land of cush for 40 years! From he was 27 until 66. So big time-span. But interesting considering that the hebrews wandered for 40 years in the desert before entering the holy land. And when he came to the midianites he was put in prisn for 10 years( maybe gods punishment for slaying a man and trying to hid it?). That´s also were we get the myth of "the sword in the stone" of the arthurian legends. 38 And afterward Moses went into the garden of Reuel which was behind the house, and he there prayed to the Lord his God, who had done mighty wonders for him. 39 And it was that whilst he prayed he looked opposite to him, and behold a sapphire stick was placed in the ground, which was planted in the midst of the garden. 40 And he approached the stick and he looked, and behold the name of the Lord God of hosts was engraved thereon, written and developed upon the stick. 41 And he read it and stretched forth his hand and he plucked it like a forest tree from the thicket, and the stick was in his hand. 42 And this is the stick with which all the works of our God were performed, after he had created heaven and earth, and all the host of them, seas, rivers and all their fishes. 43 And when God had driven Adam from the garden of Eden, he took the stick in his hand and went and tilled the ground from which he was taken. 44 And the stick came down to Noah and was given to Shem and his descendants, until it came into the hand of Abraham the Hebrew. 45 And when Abraham had given all he had to his son Isaac, he also gave to him this stick. 46 And when Jacob had fled to Padan-aram, he took it into his hand, and when he returned to his father he had not left it behind him. 47 Also when he went down to Egypt he took it into his hand and gave it to Joseph, one portion above his brethren, for Jacob had taken it by force from his brother Esau. 48 And after the death of Joseph, the nobles of Egypt came into the house of Joseph, and the stick came into the hand of Reuel the Midianite, and when he went out of Egypt, he took it in his hand and planted it in his garden. 49 And all the mighty men of the Kinites tried to pluck it when they endeavored to get Zipporah his daughter, but they were unsuccessful. 50 So that stick remained planted in the garden of Reuel, until he came who had a right to it and took it. www.sacred-texts.com/chr/apo/jasher/index.htm - Book of jasher Great movie. Peace brother!

    Biggest difference for me is that in the film, Pharaoh says "no" to letting the Hebrews go, then God sends all the plagues (except the last one) at one time. But in the bible, after each plague, Moses asks again to release them, but God intentionally hardens Pharaoh's heart so he won't be persuaded to release them, then he can send the next plague. God taking away someone's free will - not something we hear discussed a lot.

  • @JM-vj2sx

    I like the way my pastor talks about this. He says it’s not so much that God took away his free will. He says God “squeezed” his heart, so to speak, so whatever was already inside would come out.

  • @TheConstantSeeker

    @TheConstantSeeker

    @@JM-vj2sx Interesting. Even if that were the case, it's still a case of God taking action to force a change in behavior. The scriptures are clear through. It says, "But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt, he will not listen to you." An action to turn him resistant to compassion and mercy so that God could continue to send more plagues/destruction.

    Well actually this was a case that God knew pharaoh wouldn’t listen a lot of things that God allowed to happen is attributed to him in the Hebrew Scriptures like When they say god closed up someone’s womb ussually that just meant the couldn’t have children normally. And God still gave Pharaoh opportunity to change his mind and warned people each time before a plague.

    We definitely have free will and what we choose can make a difference why else would God always warn people before he acts take Jonah and Ninivah for example or the scripture at Deuteronomy 30:19

  • @TheConstantSeeker

    @@ambrosianapier7545 The scriptures are pretty clear when it says "God hardened his heart." Or in your example of "God closed her womb." You're saying that's just different phrasing for really it just happened but it's being attributed to God. That's an interesting theory. Can you demonstrate the difference between when events are attributed to God but he didn't actually do it, vs when something is attributed to God, but he actually did it?

    Now a friend told me in the scriptures its hailstones pouring down NOT fireballs or these flaming meteors which seems less damaging. Can you confirm? Hailstones fall all the time so how would that be destructive or impressive?

    It's both. Exodus 9:23 reads, "Then Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth. And the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt." It should be noted that the NIV says, "lightning," instead of "fire." However, the ESV (quoted above), KJV, NASB, Tree of Life Version, ASV, and others read, "fire." Even if we take out the fire part, Exodus 9:24-25 says that the hail was the worst that Egypt had ever seen and it destroyed everything.

  • @shadowfrost-kz5vo

    Actually the fire could be lightning the miracle part was it happed when he said it would and was an extremely bad storm people were warned to stay inside those that didn’t got killed by massive hailstones. Each plague was an attack on One of Egypt’s gods as well, that these gods could do nothing to prevent them.

    I say that the prince of Egypt movie and prequel film Joseph king of dreams is not exactly accurate from the real stories of the bible, they are interesting and great animated films from DreamWorks but just to know the truth from the bible as to know the word and truth from God in a biblical way. So good thing there are other bible movies to know the bible exactly what really happened long ago.
