LYRICS
Somewhere in the end of all this hate
There's a light ahead
That shines into this grave that's in the end of all this pain
In the night ahead there's a light upon this
House on a hill
The living, living still
Their intention is to kill and they will, they will
But the children are doing fine
I think about them all the time
Until they drink the wine and they will, they will, they will
Somewhere in the end we're all insane
To think a light ahead can save us from this
Grave that's in the end of all this pain
In the night ahead there's a light up on this
House on a hill
The living, living still
Their intention is to kill and they will, they will
But the children are doing fine
I think about them all the time
Until they drink the wine and they will, they will, they will
I am not afraid
I won't burn out in this place
My intention is to fade and I will, I will
In this
House on a hill
The dead are living still
With intentions to kill and they will, they will
Keep your children safe inside
Out of pocket, out of mind
Until they drink the wine and they will, they will, they will

I think The Pretty Reckless are the best band to come from this generation of rock - I'm 53 and been around the block once or twice but I stay loyal to my rock and Taylor and her band have got what it takes for a long sucessful career-keep at it beautiful.

Agreed. I didn't notice it until someone in the comments pointed it out, but their song Oh My God and the video for it pays some homage to Nirvana and Grunge in a way that I've not heard done in a long time. I'm 34 and I grew up when rock and alternative was what was played on the radio. To find a band that does these things right brings me back to those times.

Oh yes we are insane! I identify as Christian, but i still love this band! And the way that i think about it, as a youth, i was deeply hurt in a way of a person's spiritual being by the people i was supposed to be able to trust. I came out on the other side of that, and still decided, yes i am a Christian. But there was over a decade that i told every one if ever the topic surfaced, that i was an atheist because i didn't know how to have the conversation that this music gives. You have to decide who you are, and who that person is -you may not even like, but you have to make peace with that person in some way. I emerged on the other side of my struggle as a Christian -in identity, but one who's wings had certainly been clipped. I hope that i am still a Christian in eternity. Thank you Pretty Reckless!

The second album, going to hell, is pure maturity. It's a great record but not even the critics said good things about it. They don't have the fair attention because of Taylor's past as an actress and because It's a band with a female vocalist.

Caitlyn Freeman This is just my take on it... Based on the music video and the lyrics... I think the song is conveying how screwed up the world is, and we're forced to look to the 'house on the hill' for comfort, saving.. and they're houses of power, like the white house, parliaments, etc. Based on the line 'their intention is to kill' I think it's talking about the leaders of the past and present that have sinister agendas when it comes to warfare and foreign affairs, how the bodies pile up to serve their greed and desire for empire, money etc. 'Until they drink the wine' refers to the christian act of drinking the blood of Christ--so that could be a scathing indictment on religion--but it could also refer to metaphorically drinking the wine, so being influenced heavily by the media, government in a negative way at a young age ('the children are doing fine') I also think the verse with 'My intention is to fade' has to do with wanting to leave this world or just live her own way, without being under the control or influence of a corrupt leader or government, the things she believes cause all the hate, pain and suffering that creates an endless cycle. The repetition of 'they will, they will' could infer that the cycle is inescapable. Wars will continue to wage, children will be negatively influenced by those in power, acts of evil will continue to be committed. The 'light ahead' and the 'grave' could signify what comes after this life, and how she hopes it will be better than what we have created here. So, yeah just my thoughts on it, I don't know the official meaning... but then again, a good song can mean so many different things to so many people. As long as it affects you in some way.
