POSSIBLY one of the BEST BANDS EVER....

I'm a huge P's fan and this song strikes me in particular. I've always felt "Birds" was one of their best lyrically. So poignant. Thanks Chrissie.

0:14 - walking out of the shadow, playing that haunting riff, Jimmy, then so real at 2:35 it just flows......at 3:47 he interrupts, the dream -and then Pete fills.... simply brilliant.

one take could be she would be moving on from relationship with ray davies to a marriage with jim kerr, simple minds. romance in stockholm and rome, farflung, the wanting, struggling, redemption??? fine song, well sung, saw them once in the 80s with iggy pop opening. chrissie hynde had white tuxedo like outfit like beatles in those white suits in your mother should know. she and band rocked the house down oakland arena, long live rock, especially 80s bay area....talk about lost youth ?!!

Chrissie may have had Brass in Pocket, but she had aheart of gold. Most heartfelt love song she ever wrote.

They played this song 6 + years ago in Boston at Avalon. You could hear a pin drop. It was stunning. Chrissie has more confidence now and is a better singer than ever (I saw the originals). To all who think that that she is better when she is dishing than when she is wishing...I prefer her when she is wishing. She is unparalleled and heartbreaking. Long live Chrissie.

I saw them a few times in the 90s but never saw them play this. One time someone brought an actual Bird of Paradise plant up to the stage and gave it to Chrissie and she said, "Sorry, we don't play this one anymore." Great to hear that they brought it back and that the audience gave it the pin-drop attention it deserves! Must have been a thrill.

My favorite Pretenders song. Soooo lucky I got to see the '81 show. All of us Akronites are proud of Chrissie!

I saw them August '81... Warfield theater in San Francisco..first row.. Chrissie came down and sat in my boyfriend's lap during the concert..it was so wonderful that concert..etched in my❤ and soul forever

Nothing will ever beat that original lineup..They were soft, rude, smart and funny..Their songs reflected a lot of what they went through as a group of outcasts trying to make it in the music world. Every aspiring musician should be familiarized with the Pretenders. Farndon and Honeyman Scott rivaled the best that rock or new wave could offer at that time and Chrissie Hynde was the perfect piece to complete that puzzle.

Chrissie Hynde from Akron, Ohio and in 1970 student at Kent State, so many sweet and sad memories for me personally during my draft time 1969- 1970...Love the Pretenders.

@royalnash I grew to love the second album, the songs are a bit more subdued and understated where as the first album was bursting with energy. really like this song though and I think it stands alongside "Talk of the Town" as a stand-out track.

Funny, I saw The Pretenders one week ago in Paris, and Chrissie surprised us while getting very upset and yelling to people taking picture with their mobiles in first rows (I'll stand by you, Elysee Montmartre, Paris 29/06/09). And I notice on this video (from 2'09 to 2'15) that she complains about a photograph in the public, probably annoyed by the flash)
