In Germany we actually have more of an underdog story. FC Heidenheim. They split of from their parent in 2007 and since than have jumped up from the 5th to the first division. If you count the year before that, they actually rose up 6 times, because of a change in the league system. All under the same coach, who led them to the 5th division as a captain and since than as a coach. He‘ll be the longest serving football coach in German professional football at the age of 49

Then they won 4-0 at Wigan in the opening week and made a real go at it despite having a championship-at-best side. Their last game at Old Trafford against champions Man United they still had a chance at survival despite starting 9 of the same starting XI who started the playoff final the year before. They took the lead at Old Trafford before losing and got relegated.

In Portugal, we have another example of consecutive promotions like Luton. Os Belenenses, from Lisbon. The team was actually one of the biggest names in Portuguese football up until the 60s and one of the five clubs that won the championship but in 2018, after years of dispute, the club members decide to split from the investors' team (much like AFC Wimbledon) and restart in the last division - the 7th - an amateur and regional league. Since then, the team managed to get 5 consecutive promotions and next season will play in the 2nd division. Moreover, two of the players: André Serra and Alex Figueiredo have been doing this journey with the team, the first being a regular presence in the starting eleven! And curiously, after being relegated last season from 1st division, the investors' team was again relegated last weekend and so will play in the 3rd division next season... Five years later, football showed that it still belongs to the fans!

Absolutely great content as always guys. Your figure's on net spend for Burnley are absolutely mile off though. We spent around 40 million, but that doesn't account for the sales of Collins, Cornet, Pope and McNeil, which probably total around 50-60 million off the top of my head. Nothing to take away from Luton's incredible season, but doesn't hurt to be accurate all the time.

Amazing story and to get this far by not spending big bucks and operating on a balancing the books basis. What hope it gives to other clubs in trying reach top heights. Kenilworth Road will be a real culture shock for many other Premiership sides and if they can turn it into a fortress to amass points, it could well keep them in the division. That would be great for the game as long as they're not doing it at the expense of my team The Toffees.

In Belgium, there was one club who had a Cinderella story, namely Royal USG (Union Saint Gilloise). After being enslaved from top-tier of Belgian football for almost 50 years, they somehow got promoted back in 2021 and had a fantastic run on the first season since the promotion. Having influenced by Brighton's owner Tony Bloom, the club somehow won the league, but not before they narrowly missed out the championship playoff to Club Brugge. The ridiculous league run also meant they qualified for the Champions League qualification round. Despite it was actually short trip due to the 2-3 aggregate loss against Rangers, the club still qualified to the Europa League group stage and topped the group that contained Braga, Malmo, and fellow German underdogs Union Berlin. The Round of 16 was a rematch of the group stage against the latter, with USG prevailed 6-3 on aggregate (3-3 at Berlin, 3-0 at Brussels). At the end, the club lost to another Germans Bayer Leverkusen in last 8 by 2-5 on aggregate, despite having big advantages to win due to nervy 1-1 draw away from home. They also narrowly missed out the league title to Royal Antwerp after scoring a late equaliser to win their title, which was followed up by conceding 3 goals in last minute against Club Brugge.

Anyone writing Luton off needs their head checking. Yeah, sure, there's a really good chance they go down.....but wait until Haaland, Salah, Casimero and so on, have to go away to Kenilworth Road. EVERY team is going to be EXPECTED to win comfortably, so they will have zero pressure on them. Its also a stadium without all the creature comforts, and it will feel really hostile for away teams. I could see them getting 10 wins at home on guts and grit and noise alone. What they do with the other 28 games will decide whether they stay up or not.
