The Practice of Being a Whole Artist

Our art process - the actual act of making and the way we do it - is just a part of the practice of being a whole artist. It also involves our emotional, intellectual and physical state, our history, our relationships, etc. -- our whole selves. In this video I talk about the difference between engaging and honoring every part of yourself and your experience in your art practice versus acknowledging or valuing only the process of putting paint, or whatever your medium is, on a surface and producing a piece of art. Have a watch and leave me a comment below with your thoughts on this topic. #artpractice #abstractart #oilpainting

I appreciate all that you are doing to help people. Like me. We do not need another make a line like I did channel. We need a person who helps us know why we want to make that line. The only request I have is could you up the volume, it is hard to hear you.

Many thanks for your comments. We are trying different approaches to improve the sound! We have several different microphones, sound proofing on the ceiling and rugs on the floor. So, good to know we have to keep solving the problem... 😊🙏

Thanks for this video. I (re)discovered painting a couple of years ago and I'm figuring out my process as a whole artist as its changing and deepening. I'm now thinking about how I can arrange my life over the next few years to be able to continue developing as an artist, which feels like a necessity now. But its challenging because I have a career already in healthcare which I am passionate about too! I need both!

Many thanks for sharing a bit about "you" here! Many artists I work with have another career, interestingly many of them are in the healthcare world. Making art is a great way to balance the stressors of the rest of our lives... I'm glad you are painting! Look forward to hearing more from you in future video comments 🙏😊

I almost didn't watch this video but I am glad I did, you are able to articulate difficult concepts with clarity and in an engaging way. Sharing a work that you are unsure about in the way you did is much appreciated and confidence boosting.

I'm so glad you DID watch the video! And many thanks for sharing your thoughts here... showing vulnerability is also showing up with courage. Making abstract art helps strengthen the relationship between vulnerable expression and the courage to keep going. Cheers to your artistic practice!

I have never been comfortable calling myself an artist..until this video. Your explanation was a massive light bulb moment for me and yes, I always thought I needed to earn the title of artist by producing consistently, selling consistently and having all the things you’re told that you should have in place to be taken seriously (ie; website, studio, etc). The clarity I received from your explanation resonated so deeply. It finally makes sense to me that I have always been an artist. Thank you so much for this particular video and all your videos, which I’m watching from the beginning. Btw, Georgia O’Keefe is one of my favorite artists as well. Her story and style of painting is just so gorgeous and inspiring to me..

Hi Ann, Thank you so much for sharing a bit of your story here. Your words: "I always thought I needed to earn the title of artist by producing consistently, selling consistently and having all the things you’re told that you should have in place to be taken seriously" echo the art world's perception of what it means to be a successful artist - which is driven by our societal notion of what success means. I believe it is part of the equation, but after painting as a professional artist for 40 years I know that it is only PART of the equation for those who are compelled by exploration, seek truth within and around, and use visual language to communicate meaning in the world. The "audience" can see the difference between work that goes deep and work that is produced to conform with what sells. Cheers to your whole practice!
