The PPC 42 is the Perfect IWC Watch | Watchfinder & Co.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Some people have a bit of a love-hate relationship with IWC. In talking with watch aficionados about the brand, some will acknowledge loving a particular model, but will further confess that it’s just a bit too wide or a bit too thick for them to take the leap. It’s a shame, because IWC makes some of the best-looking watches in the business, is up there with the top dogs on spec and truly offers a chunk of watchmaking history that no modern brand can hope to replicate. Well, IWC’s been listening, because now there’s this: the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 42, and it just might be the perfect IWC.

I own a perpetual calendar white gold and it is an amazing watch. My version is 44 mm (with the year indicator) and it looks fine on my 17 cm wrist... I can wear it with a suit no problem, fits under the sleeve... The movement is delicate, so adjusting anything at the wrong time will set your watch on its way to Switzerland for repair. That is a big heads up. That happened to me once and, trust me, you don't wanna go down that road (took months to get it back). Highly recommend a programmable winder to keep it running if you don't wear it that often.

I have a couple IWC and love the brand but I have to disagree with you on this one. IWC managed to reduce the size by eliminating some of the functions, which is fine, but for them to really impress, they needed to keep the same functions as the other model (year, PR display) AND reduce the size. That would be impressive. But only being able to reduce the size by eliminating functionality is nothing to brag about. And Yes, no body really need the year display, but no one really needs a mechanical watch either so that point is moot. The PPC Blue Dial is still to me the best IWC.

And what this watch REALLY accomplishes is not having the apertures cut into the hour indicators! One of the most annoying features of the Portuguese PC. Taking out the 4 digit year is NOT an enhancement. Give me the same watch, slightly larger but designed like the Big Pilot face. Delete the 12. Realign the hour indicators. So simple.

I just typed the comment below before seeing yours :"No it's not. 1. the power reserve failed to retain its predecessor's 7 days, not even 3 days. 2. no power reserve indicator. 3. its perpetual calendar is still the simple and hard to adjust synchronized version. The independent adjustability of year, month, day and date is a MUST to a high end perpetual calendar watch." That said, I almost completely agree with you except that I don't quite like the bigger 7 day one, because it's just too big.

How ironic that so many people liked this comment. The IWC Portuguese is one of the most traditional watches in the game. It’s always been 42mm. They don’t beed to “go back” to their 1950 aesthetic...it’s been the same for nearly 100 years.

As an owner of a Big Pilot, that model speaks for itself, and is justified given its actually a scaled down luxury Pilot version of the original 55mm behemoth. However, for everything else, I would venture a different guess here given I doubt it has anything to do with their engineering capabilities to make something thinner. The answer is "the Richemont Group". I would expect that there are some corporate flowdowns to Panerai, IWC and JLC to not overlap each other. If the Portugieser gets smaller and thinner (and it did this year btw, but still not thinner than JLC), that overlaps with JLC master control series. Master compressor is no longer in production because it was very masculine, and masculine is for IWC and Panerai it would seem. Richemont instead seems to be unfairly marketing JLC as a budget Patek Phillipe, and attempting to get IWC and Panerai to recapture the magic of the early 2000s back when they were industry darlings. With the industry trending back down to smaller watch diameters and thinner cases and movements, it will be interesting to see how IWC navigates the times given likely "internal constraints". Disclaimer: this is all my speculation, nothing factual or researched in any way.

This perpetual calendar is supposed to be a dress watch? So why 42 mm? Why they didn't try to stay under 40?

I am so glad IWC got rid of Calendar year display. I don't need a watch to remind me I won't live to 2100. The leap year indicator is much better.

Very good decision to remove year and make it 2 mm smaller.

No it's not. 1. the power reserve failed to retain its predecessor's 7 days, not even 3 days. 2. no power reserve indicator. 3. its perpetual calendar is still the simple and hard to adjust synchronized version. The independent adjustability of year, month, day and date is a MUST to a high end perpetual calendar watch.
