The Power of the Placebo & Placebo Effect

In this video, Dr. Kushner explores the power of the placebo. Simply taking a placebo (inactive substance) under the impression that it's real can reduce symptoms of pain, stress, anxiety, depression and many other conditions.

Placebo Effects usually modify neural pathway and change the chemistry and circuitry of the patient's brain.

Thank you. Best explanation I've seen yet - and love the visuals. I see now why blinding is necessary - otherwise we couldn't know how much of the positive effects come from placebo and from the active ingredient. The placebo effect would be of different degrees for the two groups, so we couldn't look to the control and conclude "this amount of placebo is equal to the placebo in the experimental group." What I'm a little less clear on is the purpose of the non-treatment group. Could you elaborate a little on that? Thanks!

The purpose of the non-treatment group (I.e. control group) is to assess whether any change observed in participants’ behavior is due to the treatment (independent variable) or extraneous variables.

Many thanks for your wonderful educational videos. :) Question : In this case, would we not call the group which received no treatment as the "Control group" and the group which received placebo treatment as the "Baseline group" or "Experimental group 1" for that matter? What are your thoughts? Please educate us with these terminologies.

If one group receives no treatment and another group receives a placebo treatment, both groups can be considered control groups in the broader sense, as they serve as comparisons for the experimental group(s). However, the group that receives no treatment is typically referred to simply as the "control group," while the group that receives the placebo treatment is specifically referred to as the "placebo group." The term "baseline group" is less commonly used in this context and may be more appropriate for describing a group used to establish baseline measurements or characteristics before the start of an intervention, rather than as a comparison group in a controlled experiment.

This reminds me of Harry Potter giving his Friedn Ron, who was about to take his first Quiditch match and was feeling nervous about failing, a potion that Ron knows if he drank he would successed in all his endeavours. He nailed it eventaully but only to find n out that Harry still had that potion of success with him still.

Dear sir, could you explain what you mean with the Gene's with regards to the placebo effect. We were wondering which genes you are thinking of. Thanks from our Orthomoleculair Class in Nijmegen

Hi Chantel! I am not referring to any specific genes, but rather highlighting current research suggesting the role of genetics in experiencing the placebo effect: "Some people feel better after dummy treatments, while others feel no difference unless the drugs are real. A new paper argues that the difference may come down to genetics" Link: hms.harvard.edu/news/placebome Link: www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/04/is-the-placebo-effect-in-your-dna/390360/

Thank you for your educational programs. When it comes to Placebo effect, can we be convinced that the effect is causal, and not just a correlation? Can there be a third variable involved in some cases? For example, electrical manipulation of the nervous system? A kind of deceptive maneuver to conceal the manipulation?

Great question. If I take a fake pain reliever (or have fake surgery) but I’m convinced it’s real and my pain goes away, isn’t this causal?

@@PsychExplained Another question to refine the previous question: Asking God can be accepted or not, asking for a loan from a bank can be accepted or not. The dog that returns the thrown ball may or may not receive a reward. In such cases, is the relationship causal, or are all variables subject to an independent external force?

Check your understanding: In an experiment to test the effects of a new flu vaccine, two groups are used. One group is given the vaccine, the other group is given a placebo. The group that receives the placebo is called the A. Test group B. Experimental group C. Representative sample D. Control group
