    I am so glad to see a younger man with a black powder channel. I am fixing to turn 42 and feel a lot better seeing younger guys participating in our beloved sport. In your opinion, which is better- Pietta or Urbetti? And do you think the Pietta 1858 "shooters" version for $995 worth the money at Dixie? It has one 2 world championships.

    Having used Pietta's extensively, and Uberti's to an extent as well, I would say either brand is good these days. Personally I would go with Pietta just because they are less expensive than a Uberti. As for the Pietta Shooters Model, wish I could tell you but I've never shot one so I could not say for sure. Thanks for watching!

    So, first off, great video. I don't have a chronograph, so I can't tell what velocities I'm getting, but I thought I'd mention a few things after reading the comments section. I run the brass-frame revolver with both round balls and hollowpoint projectiles made of soft-swage lead. The hp's are .451 248grn tchp's, which I run with a pretty hot load of 30-35 grains(volumetric) of Pyrodex P. Kicks like a mule, but functional. I should mention that I grease all my cylinders; I was raised by a competent shootist and we had several Remingtons which all liked lube. I've not experienced any stretch, the hp's are hard to load but are worth it, and I clear any malfunctions from the nipple end of the cylinders. The rb I run is normally .452 soft-swage 148 grain over a 25 grain load of Pyrodex P. If you're confused about the massive difference between the powder loads, let me clue you in on a little secret. It's my backyard bear defense gun. If I miss the bear gets scared off. If I hit, the bear goes down, end of story. I used mathematics, physics, and chemistry knowledge to figure out what load would be most efficient for that effect. The reason I mention this, is that I truly wonder what the velocities average for the tchp loads I mentioned. If you want to try it out, get back to me and I'll email you the details.

    Assuming .454 ball weight of 141gr, muzzle energy should be 270ft-lbs for 35gr Graf's 3Fg, and 384ft-lbs for 35gr Pyrodex Pistol. To put that in perspective, most 380ACP 90gr bullets only manage up to 198ft-lbs, a 158gr SWC 38 Special will be around 177ft-lbs, a 115gr 9mm Parabellum is around 330ft-lbs, and a 45 ACP 230gr FMJ will be about 370ft-lbs, while a 357 Mag 180gr SWC will generate 446ft-lbs and 357 Sig 125gr FMJ will give 501ft-lbs. Ammo types, brands, hotrod loads (e.g. Underwood, Atlanta Arms, Corbon), light loads (e.g. many Federal loads are very weak), bullet weights, and especially barrel lengths will affect the actual numbers on a given day, with a given chronograph. I'd be very curious to see results with Swiss black powder and Triple 7. In one book, the Ruger old Army (a very modern, reliable revolver) with 40 gr of black powder was generating 333ft-lbs (1031 fps) and the Colt Dragoon with 50gr was giving 437ft-lbs (1181 fps). The Colt Walker, with 60gr, was king of the hill at 519ft-lbs (1287fps). All 44 caliber round ball. A 44 caliber round ball backed by 30 or more BP in a revolver with 7" or greater barrel is a very formidable weapon, even by modern standards.

    You can load up to 45 grains of black powder in the Remington 1858. 45 grains of Swiss N°1 will make about 450-500ft lbs at the muzzle

    If you're going to go for deep penetration go with a 457 diameter round ball that's a 45 caliber it's a tighter seal around the cylinder it makes a nice lead circle when you push it down into the cylinder of the revolver and on top of that it gives it a little bit more power and much more compression going out of the cylinder into the barrel and it gives it a little bit more of accuracy and it's it's a lot harder than a 451 diameter round ball and that's basically a 44 caliber I go with a 457 diameter that's 45 caliber and it works a lot better and you can hit something a little bit more harder

    I always wondered how much you could hotrod one of these. Last year, I published an article on Ammoland detailing blackpowder revolver ballistics with conicals and balls. Funny enough the velocities you are getting are about what I got out of an eight inch 1858, if I remember. I wonder if you are getting close to a full burn with the shorter barrel vs. the longer one.

  • @blackpowdershooter44

    Interesting. I would assume the longer barrel would get more velocity, but maybe not based on your findings. I'll have to try both the 8" and 12" face to face and see what I can velocities I can get. Thanks for watching!

    Maybe 3f is to fast for the longer barrel. Might burn up before the bullet is out of the barrel.

    great work. if you test the 8 inch 1858 could you also compare the 1858 uberti carbine? from what I know from reloading center-fire ammunition longer barrels with pistol caliber normally only get you and extra 100-200 fps due to limited powder capacity. my guess is that with 30 grn. of black powder most of it is burned in the first 7-8 inches of the barrel and after that the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

  • @blackpowdershooter44

    @blackpowdershooter44

    Yes, that would be interesting to see, good idea. The carbine has an 18" barrel, so it would be interesting to see if there is much of a difference in velocities.

    @@blackpowdershooter44 , I like pyrodex for my pistol, but prefer Goex for my sidelock rifle. the channel of sidlocks have a 90 degree turn to the opening inside the barrel. The pyrodex has a delay for some reason with the tradtional rifles whereas Goex dosn't.

    I have one of these, (although, in the blued steel), to which someone has affixed a screw on Henry buttstock and, in effect, it has become a carbine. I use a charge of 35 grains of Triple 7 with a .451 round ball and am considering that a max load for the sake of longevity. Do you think that a 30 grain load and a 185 gr.-200 gr. conical to be too stiff? I intend it as a deer load. Thanks.

  • @blackpowdershooter44

    @blackpowdershooter44

    If the revolver has a steel frame, which in your case sounds like it does, then yes the revolver can handle 30 grains and a conical. Brass framed revolvers cannot handle the heavy loads as effectively as the steel framed replicas. Hope this helps!

    How powerful is it? In terms of black powder handguns, very powerful, maybe not the most powerful, but the most practical power. The Walker is more powerful, but also the least practical due to the weight and terrible sights. There are some .58 caliber single shots, they're okay, but you only get one shot. The Pietta Buffalo is an 1858, you get the fast cylinder swap along with excellent sights. People love the Ruger Old Army because of its sights, but they cost a lot (one gun show I went to once had one for the low price of $1200), these Buffalo's are not cheap, but they're affordable.

  • @blackpowdershooter44

    @blackpowdershooter44

    Good points. $1200 is steep for an ROA, but I agree they're very expensive. Blued steel model 1858 Buffalos from Old South Firearms is $365 so affordable like you said. The sights are very good on the Buffalo model as well. Thanks for watching!
