The Power of Mastering Your Mix (Using Just TWO Plugins) | musicianonamission.com

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Mastering isn't a dark art.
Still, most of the time, it's best to leave it to the professionals...
It's the most logical step if you want your music to sound the best it can.
But sometimes you don't have the time or money to hire a mastering engineer, and you have to master your tracks at home.
In that case, this could be the missing step to making your mixes sound great on any speaker system.
So, what is mastering? Do you need a ton of gear?
Not at all.
With just an EQ and a limiter, you can make your mixes sound way more professional.
I asked my friend Ian (a professional mastering engineer) to make an in-depth video for you.
Inside, he covers the fundamentals of mastering...
..and how to master your tracks with just TWO mastering plugins.
You'll learn:
- Why balancing levels before applying EQ is critical
- How to set up a mastering limiter
- An easy tip to help you optimize levels and EQ
- Ian's must-have mastering plugin recommendation (don’t worry, it's surprisingly affordable)
- How to master your tracks for online streaming services

This is great content right here A key thing that i think hasn't been pointed out here is that Ian was able to make these EQ changes quickly because he had pure objectivity (and experience lol)... meaning, the music was new to him so he had a fresh perspective... it's not as easy to do these subtle EQ moves to your own music because you've already been working on your music for hours/days/weeks/months, and objectivity vanishes fast when you hear the music over and over.... Objectivity is what makes hiring a mastering engineer worthwhile.

Oh man you're the real deal. Just clicked into the vid and stumbled upon your explanation of the "closer tiger". When I hear an idea like that I know I'm in the right place. I know I could learn a lot from this. I think my track is suffering from high top and some phasing issues when playing on laptop speakers but sounds really good on my headphones. So hopefully I'll learn to fix it here.

I've done Ian's Home Mastering Masterclass, Home Mastering EQ and Mastering with Multiband Compression series and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone interested in more content like this (and I'm not getting paid to say this!). The single best thing I learned was the importance of level matching, which Ian has already talked about a bit here. But there is much more great content available! Great job condensing some of that into a single video.

This was the most comprehensive tutorial to master I have ever seen. Simple but so critical process and prone to mistakes. It needs that surgical approach to achieve the optimal result. What I have noticed is that your EQ level meters were clipping almost all the time. Isn't that affecting the audio by causing internal clipping?

Let's say that you have a mastered recording and you don't have access to the files. The kick is low in the mix and you want to bring the kick forward. The low end has a lot of info between 60 and 200 Hz. When i listen to the track it appears that the kick is mostly top end. Can this problem be addressed in Mastering?

I thought EQ in mastering is broad strokes and no more than 2 dB? Particularly the third new wave track. A part of me feels like you took too many liberties with that track. Its possible that the mix is mid range heavy for artistic license. It's not "perfectly balanced" but neither were the Beatles. How do you discern whats "better" and what's just different?

This is a fascinating and incredibly informative video to watch - thank you! It may be me, but to my ears the first song sounds a little less loud than the other two. I'd appreciate feedback on this - maybe I have a monitoring issue (I'm using AKG K 240 headphones, which I'm very used to).

  • @ProductionAdvice

    @ProductionAdvice

    6 жыл бұрын

I'm not really saying the loudness is matched, by the end - just that they are _balanced_ - that's an important distinction. They sound 'right' to me, next to each other - but your taste may vary. One reason could be the amount of upper mid energy, where our ears are most sensitive - I definitely think the third track has more of this than the other two, for example.

  • @ProductionAdvice

Right but the VUMT is on the master output, and would affect all the songs. Since I only want to adjust the balance on one song, it's better to apply the change on the clip directly. Also I prefer all my meters to be transparent - there's too much risk of forgetting to remove it, and accidentally applying the changes to other projects. (In Wavelab the master output plugins are independent of the project, by default)

When you talk about Fletcher-Munson at around 7:00, I think you've got the explanation a bit backwards, haven't you? Maybe I'm misinformed, but as I understand it, our brains are wired to make more sense of the 2-5kHz range because we are social animals that communicate with speech in that frequency range. We don't need to hear high pitched squeaks like whales, dolphins or bats in our daily lives, and we don't need to hear the low rumbles of distant thunder like thirsty elephants do, so our brains pay little attention to low or high frequencies. Hence we have to artificially boost those frequencies with "smile EQ" to make them *appear* as loud as the mid-range sounds of human speech that our brains are 'hard-wired' to focus on. In effect, our ears don't really notice bass or high treble unless you turn it up.

  • @AutPen38

    @AutPen38

    2 жыл бұрын

That is to say, our ears didn't prick up at the sound of a sabre-toothed cat quietly stalking its prey (we aren't gazelles) because we were too busy singing campfire songs in the middle octaves after we'd already found our dinner. :) Humans need to be able to talk about football in a busy pub. We don't need to hear the low growls or high pitched squeaks of animals and probably never have, since we've been top of the food chain since prehistoric times. We got to the top of the food chain by communicating with speech in the mid range frequencies.

Yes, I have bought Ian Sheperd's great plugins. They do what they're supposed to do. @Hugh Jones As a mastering engineer of more than 17 years I can tell you the worst thing you can do is master your own music. For mastering you need three things: A fresh set of ears, detailed full range monitors (20 - 20000hz) and a properly treated room. You can't mix or master what you can't hear.

  • @C.D.J.Burton

@@JohnMorris-ge6hq Haha "the worst thing you can do is master your own music". Do you have any tricks for working with headphones a little shy of the 20kh mark? I know this doesn't answer to the problem at hand but, Rob Swire (Pendulum/Knife Party) I think said something like he sweeps a low-pass filter up and down (presumably a focused band-pass too) to be able to better identify areas in need of EQ. I haven't heard this anywhere before - but his tracks are quality so I respect it. Ever heard that before?

As a fellow mastering engineer I respect you sir. But people mastering their own songs is not a good idea. You need a FRESH PAIR OF EARS and a full range detailed speakers and properly treated studio.
