The power of constraints: Phil Hansen at TEDxKC

Phil Hansen is a multimedia artist who works at the intersection of traditional visual art, pointillism, and offbeat techniques. He is most widely known for his meta-art, videos that document the creation process, showing millions that art is action, not just result.
As a commercial artist, he has worked on a variety of TV and internet campaigns with clients that include the Grammy's, Skype, Diesel and Arby's. Hansen is the author of Tattoo A Banana, an innovative approach to everyday creativity.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Some of Phil Hanson impactful quotes: 1. Embracing a limitation could actually drive creativity. 2. We need to first be limited in order to become limitless. 3. Learning to be creative within the confines of our limitations is the best hope we have to transform ourselves and, collectively, transform our world. 4. Limitations may be the most unlikely of places to harness creativity, but perhaps one of the best ways to get ourselves out of ruts, rethink categories and challenge accepted norms. 5. Instead of telling each other to seize the day, maybe we can remind ourselves every day to seize the limitation.

His talk is absolutely inspiring! As a Feldenkrais practitioner, I can really relate his talk to my work. People present their physical challenges/constraints/limitations (often pain, balance issues, mobility issues). We often see our limitations as a problem that needs to be fixed. A real solution lies in the limitations.

Inspiring and so energizing. I have MS and although a hobbyist painter , I totally get the frustration of shaky hands. Pinpoint accuracy is an illusion, but I do the best I can with what I have. I manage symptoms pretty well , still go for walks , exercise and paint. What a wonderful presentation. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

This is pretty inspiring. I'm currently dealing with a desire for creativity, but an inefficiency to actually apply it. Perhaps with limitations, I can make art of my own...

I hope you had some nice, fulfilling creating spells. However, if you struggled to start, take a look at "The Artist's Way", a book by Julia Cameron. I think it would tick with you.
