Cosmic creativity -- how art evolves consciousness: Alex Grey at TEDxMaui 2013

About the Presenter:
Visionary artist Alex Grey began his career as a medical illustrator at Harvard Medical School, but is best known for paintings that present the physical and subtle anatomy of an individual in the context of cosmic, biological and technological evolution. His work has been featured in Time and Newsweek, on the Discovery Channel, and as album art for TOOL, the Beastie Boys and Nirvana.
About TEDx:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

you gotta admit though, the story is pretty ridiculous :) That's why people are laughing. nothing wrong with laughing at the ridiculousness of someone's youthful adventures/misadventures. We all have them.

lsd is not ridiculous, mainstream strife is ridiculous, your laugher is not innocent because it results or stems from death, (innocent people's lives are destroyed because of irrational prohibition) lsd is not youthful misadventure, not eating lsd because of superstition is a misadventure and waste of life. We don't all have anything, all generalizations are false. and lsd is no joke, not that kind of joke anyways.

Laffing is a coping mechanism. Much as when a dog is being beaten to death, it may grimace, often seen as if smiling, and wag it's tail. Horrible, but true. It depends on our background and how we are able to survive thru unbelievable pain and suffering. Children who are abused may use this skill to appease their tormentor. It is learned behavior on both parties. When someone laffs inappropriately, use compassion.

*WOW*. holy shit...I'm honestly kind of in shock right now. I just paused the video at *15:53*. About 4 years ago, I had the most awe-inspiring, poignant, mysterious, meaningful experience of my entire life. I had taken 5 grams of psilocybin mushrooms. About 1 hour into the experience, with eyes closed, I saw *_THIS_* same exact image...but in full 3D(it seemed to go into infinity). I'm not even kidding. I saw the *_exact_* same scene. Yet, this is the first time I've ever seen Alex's painting. I didn't even _know_ of Alex until yesterday. I'm seriously in shock. Did he and I see the same thing?? He said that painting was inspired by an Ayahuasca vision. I don't even know _what_ to think right now......

i think the brain holds onto images very well on a subconscious level. you may have seen the tool album cover at some point, maybe not. part of me is intrigued with the idea of a mass consciousness, that hallucinogenics bring us to some sort of shared cloud / zone. but i'm also curious if our brains are just wired similarly enough to produce the ballpark-same images / effects when we hallucinate. i think the universe winks at me enough when i ask it questions for there to be some sort of greater program.

He does not talk out of ego, but out of the soul that each of us have. I think the frankness of that which he speaks may turn some off, for they have simply not explored that aspect of reality. It is quite a profound truth to accept and witness, and I think Alex Grey has shared something to humanity that is not ready to be accepted. Perhaps in a couple of generations, humans will appreciate Alex Grey for that which he has contributed to humanity.

Alex Grey on creativity: "Every creative act empowers every other creative act. The painter channels the creative force into the artifact and this artifact then becomes a battery ready to zap a viewer into a new way of seeing the world." And "once we understand things in a new way, it creates a new world." I love how he relates this to the evolution of human consciousness. Zap on, Alex! The awakening is upon us.

Although I truly do enjoy Alex Grey, and I love is work - I did find certain parts humorous as well. But I think some parts were meant for a bit of humour and lightheartedness. Another part is some of what he says is so absurd (not sure if this is the word I'm looking for, but I don't mean it in a negative way), that it comes to a sort of shock which makes the audience a bit of unsure of how to react... And I think it sort of comes through with laugher hah

Fabricio Giampietro It seemed to me they mostly laughed (the adolescent titter) at the references to his pieces that were envisioned during psychedelic experiences. I sometimes feel that those who haven't done psychedelics think the validity of those experiences of less value than transcendent experiences in "reality." As Bob Marley said, "He who feels it, knows it." I met Alex and Allyson and even posed for a couple of his energy drawing classes. They are the real deal. Originators. Visionary.

I love that he's able to reach out to a crowd that doesn't see themselves as "sophisticated artsy types" and take them seriously. Someone complained here about the audience but in truth this is who he's trying to reach. He wants to reach everyday people with what he believes to be an important message and he knows they can grasp the things he wants to relate. If not for the common person then who is art for? without the common man art has no value.

  • @hankzhong

It's amazing that he was able to explain each painting with so few words. I've been to his church CoSM in the Hudson Valley, and it is indeed a trippy place with a mushroom cafe (unfortunately it does not sell mushroom) to boot. Seeing his art up close, you realize the amount of work that goes into each piece. They provide a refreshing contrast to all the postmodern art that purposely shy away from meaning. Lastly, I love this idea that artists must bear witness to the transcendent and show the world what they see.

OMG! I finally found it. The voice @ 13:05.. the voice from the psytrance track: Gold - by Captain Hook. "Planetary conciousness becomes cosmic conciousness through human conciousness" I can't believe the track has Alex Grey's voice. It is truly magical and probably my hook into psytrance world. Thanks Grey 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Paganism ! Rituals from Masons and the enlightened ones aka the Illuminati. They will tell you that Lucifer means the holder of the light because he used to hold a light . So be careful ! God is not a concept . God is Himself just as sure as he made you yourself and not a concept . God Consciousness as he uses it is the Idea of Knowing everything ..... When you and I both know in our heart of hearts that we weren't ment to know everything . Now God Consciousness in terms of God always being on the fore front of your mind and consciousness while making decisions is Good . Well thankyou for reading anyway . I know people have their beliefs not trying to change yours but I will tell you what I know .... Love and Respect Peace and God Bless ~1~

I am deeply grateful for Alex and Allison Grey's contributions to art, awareness of the essential nature of life; the connection between man, earth/nature, Kosmos, and Great Spirit. We have all been gifted with love and awareness by Alex and Allison at a time when society and government are lost and confused about morals, what's ultimately important, religion, mythology, spirituality, and much more... Fortunately, because of how symbols work, anyone looking at their art or this presentation, regardless of the judgments they hold, will be seeded with transformative wisdom that will inspire awareness and growth within when they are ready to realize themselves in relationship to the Grand Mystery of life and Love. My Love and Blessings to you Alex, Allison, and family. Love and chi, Paul Chek

Alex Grey is my favorite artist. I would not be where I am today without his inspiration. Art evolves consciousness. Consciousness evolves beliefs. Beliefs create culture. Culture constructs civilization. In my most spiritual experiences I have come into contact with my Self and God (which are the same) and I try to communicate these experiences with my art. I feel this is the most important duty of the artist - To synthesize your experiences into a cohesive creation and inspire others to believe that anything is possible.

I have some of his beautiful artwork adorning the walls of my acupuncture clinic. Patients often comment on how they could stare at them for hours, finding something new each visit. LSD is a weird one - My soul, my heart, my mind was opened up to the infinite love and creativity of the universe, and for that I am forever grateful. But the enhanced empathy also allowed for a greater realisation of all the terrible things that are weighing the world down with hate and negativity.

Fantastic to hear Alex speak of the evolution and meaning of his art. I have been a fan for a long time. I also have a story to share: My grandmother was very psychically tuned. She also loved Alex Gray's work. I gifted her a signed Alex Gray print she that she kept on her living room wall. It's Theolo(?) seen at 14:17. My grandmother was into yoga, meditation and could astral project. So was a fitting piece for her. After her death the house had burned down. Everything in the house ruined, the print charred and melted plastic (from the frame we bought for it). But Alex's signature (w/ triangle and third eye symbol) was left untouched. I took it as a sign from her that things would be OK. Later we learned through a psychic medium that she burned the house down 'herself' to help the family move on (not to lament over material things). Anyways, thank you Alex for sharing your gifts and your message. Was beautiful to see how 'Theolo' fit in the evolution of your work. And you are right. It's time to heal the planet. To do that I think we need to help one another heal first.
