The Pour Update : Treating Alcoholics with Wine - The Fifth Estate

It starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 9:30 p.m. It’s called “the pour” -- an hourly dose of wine that’s given to chronic alcoholics. It’s a bold move, but still a controversial way to deal with alcoholism.
It’s known as the Managed Alcohol Program, and Ottawa is one of eight cities across Canada that has adopted the program.
Mark Kelley first visited the Oaks a year ago -- a former hotel that is now home to about 50 residents who are given a new chance at life: a permanent home, health care they desperately need, food, friendship and, of course, alcohol.
On this journey, we catch up with some residents to see where they're at now: Jimmy, whose story went viral when we told it last December with 2.5 million views on Facebook; an Inuit artist who has found new hope; and the doctor behind it all who now plans to devote even more time to the program.
Alcohol doesn’t discriminate -- it can devastate the lives of the poor and the privileged.
Ottawa’s program is winning the attention of doctors, politicians and treatment centres across the country -- and around the world. The same question remains across borders: whether the drink that has destroyed so many lives could now help save them.

The lack of understanding within the medical community about mental health is a major contributor to so many of the problems we all encounter. My ex-partner was an alcoholic, it's heartbreaking the damage that is inflicted and so often they want it to end as badly as everyone else.

Harm reduction is sometimes the only way. I’m a drug addict myself and have been through 6 rehabs and 5 detoxes. The stigma of addiction is getting better with the newer generations but will always have a misunderstanding and rightfully so. A person shouldn’t be judged by their addiction because you never know what pain these people are trying to escape. This is a great program and I think there should be more like it. Simply smiling when in active addiction is a task so to see these people social and smiling is proof it works. A++

While I understand the controversy, you can see the difference it makes for these people. Jimmy's story moved me, I had a drink problem at 18 years old. My health was not great, I have been legally disabled since I was 14 and until 18 I never had access to alcohol or cigarettes and I found that addiction was so easy to fall into, but not so easy to get out of. I succeeded in getting out of the drink, though I did it cold turkey and it was a living nightmare, but I know it doesn't work for everybody. I'm 22 now, and while my health is still deteriorating with the conditions I have and my mobility getting worse, I no longer have a problem with alcohol. I do drink, on the rare occassion, but not even once a month, on my best friends birthday and on my own I may have one or two drinks, but nothing that would trigger an addiction problem again. I'm doing better, without alcohol, it only ever adds to problems and is such a wicked demon to fight. Thankfully I never became homeless, I was highly functioning and paid my bills somehow, I am one lucky being to still be here and to have never had such a rough experience of becoming homeless due to addiction. I love The Oaks and what they do, it's a shame the UK (where I live) has not taken up the same idea, I feel it would benefit so many people and could trigger recovery in a significant portion of those ones. I wish all of The Oaks residents the best in their lives and their recovery from alcoholism, I wish them success and love in everything they do. I do hope Jimmy continues with his flower making, they were such lovely things, and even more beautiful gifts - something that holds such sentimental value and skill is a gift worth more than gold and jewels.

Harm reduction saves lives, addiction IS a mental illness glad to see vaping is an acceptable alternative to cigarettes as well, lot of propaganda out there, the UK has been putting out fantastic non bias articles on vaping, stating time and time again that it IS 95% safer than cigarettes and is an effective measure for smoking cessation. Providing these people with a safe community is just a rich experience for them.

3 bottles of wine a day, wow. I was up to 2, and it was pretty bad. I just did a taper down myself and am on my 5th day alcohol-free, it's pretty nice not to need that stuff. The trouble is, in the US there's no treatment for alcoholism so you either stay an alcoholic or if you're very lucky, determined, and willing to put up with a fair amount of discomfort, you can use wine to taper yourself off of wine. The sequence is, if you're drinking hard liquor, you need to change over to wine. Then you need to start decreasing/diluting the wine.

The guy was singing the song about the Bible the big book he called it. You know it's not a sin to drink it's sinful to be drunk all the time these people aren't drunk all the time they might catch a buzz but that's what alcohol is for. Getting drunk is taking the experience too far. All the other countries around the world need to look at Canada and come in the Canadian people and their Health Care system for treating their people like human beings and not stigmatizing them or throwing them out like garbage may God bless this doctor and all the good people that work and live there.

I’m not usually into victim mentality, but this documentary put a different facet on things. I really respect the wonderful doctor reaching out compassionately to these people. It also showed the dear personalities of these people struggling with this awful addiction. Keep up the good work Doctor.

How do they keep track of who received the hourly pour? If their names are simply checked off, human error can still occur so this is the prefect environment to exploit RFID chipping. It's already being utilized in some Alzheimer/dementia facilities (in case patient gets lost) so this is an ideal segue to use the 'chip' to keep track of what the 'impaired' can't.

I'm sorry about your friend. I hope you learn more about alcoholism. Living around it doesn't help you understand the suffering of the one who has the disease. It may even harden your heart as you protect yourself (unintentionally) against the pain. I've been on both sides of that fence. They are both horrific places to be, but no one can know alcoholic suffering except an alcoholic.
