    Took the week-long class with Will in 2015 at Roy Underhill's school in NC. Awesome time! I'm in pretty good shape, and it was back breaking work at times, but well worth it. Roy was there all week and treated everyone like family. It was also nice to hang out with fellow woodworking kindred spirits from across the USA. If you can, put the Woodwright's School on your bucket list.

    I would expect it is because the worktop seems to be spit down the middle and so the top rail has to be strong enough to hold the worktop in place with no help from it.

    I was wondering what your thoughts are on building this base but putting a Nicholson style top on it. I am new to wood working and don't want to spend money on vises, so I love the Nicholson bench and all the holes it has for clamping things down with the rod (forgot the name). But, I rent my house and need a design that I can break down easily when we move. Are there structural problems to consider when trying to put a Nicholson top on this base?

  • @WoodAndShop

    @WoodAndShop

    6 жыл бұрын

    The Nicholson style top is too thin and won't absorb the blow of your work very well. It will also be much more loud than a solid thick top. The Moravian base also needs a heavy top to keep it weighed down. Does this help?

  • @jimjones26

    @jimjones26

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, thanks! So, are there any structural issues with this build if I forgo the vise and add more peg holes in the other leg and the top?

  • @WoodAndShop

    No structural issues with excluding the vise, but it's a lot less convenient. The vises are very, very helpful. Find a friend who has a leg vise and tail vise, and use them so you can see how much they help.

    Good stuff Mr Myers, I ‘m probably guessing rightly that you had no intentions of becoming a film star 💫 at this stage, but that was impressive. I ‘m sold on the concept -black sorcery is definitely involved here with construction . Now if you ever do a re-shoot; don’t look so rushed & even have a 10 or 20 second chat about how many beers you drank in the pub last night half way through(not sure it has to be about beer 🍺 though, as I do know the Moravian s were a bit bible bashing types), but relaxing the situation might be more impressive, even if it took a minute & a half. + it would suit your non assuming demeanour jamp. 👍 (I really can’t fault this though> super vid)

  • @WoodAndShop

    @WoodAndShop

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it absolutely can. However, in the DVD you'll learn that most workbenches really don't need to be very deep at all, as it just accumulates junk. The majority of hand tool work takes place right near the edge.

    Yes. Thank you. I will be using it for multiple purposes. My principal interest in woodwork is to make custom frames for art and photography projects, and I need a table that can accommodate the mounting and cutting of large prints as well.

    You can certainly extend the whole workbench top rather than having a tool tray. But I'd recommend doing two pieces so that it remains portable. The half top weighs under 100 lbs, which is movable for most men. So you'd have a split top with two manageable pieces under 100 lbs. But doing one full piece would weigh around 200 lbs. which would require someone to help you transport it.

  • @bigstauf

    I also built this bench after reading Mr. Myers' article on it. Unfortunately, something is wrong with the leg vise, it doesn't close square with the bench top. I think its because I didn't incorporate any of the screw into the leg. I used a metal screw instead of a wooden screw, so I didn't have a large nut on the back of the vise.

    Wood and Shop no doubt, I did a laminated bench top and where I chose to put the vise, there was a knot, which, when combined with having no support from the leg, caused the front edge of the bench to start splitting. Simple solution is to flip the bench top around and make a new mortise, this time, making sure the back of the vise, bench top and front left leg are an integral piece when assembled.
