The Pope Of Greenwich Village - "Charlie, they took my thumb!!!!"

Фильм және анимация

One of the best scenes from a forgotten movie.... The Pope Of Greenwich Village.
Paulie had a debt, and he couldn`t pay it of, so, they took his thumb instead.
Wonderful acting from Eric Roberts.

You should check him in out in his first lead performance in 'King Of The Gypsies' 6 years earlier. A grossly underrated film with a stellar cast...Sterling Hayden, Susan Sarandon, Judd Hirsch, Michael Gazzo, Shelley Winters, Annie Potts, Annette O'Toole, and a teenage Brooke Shields in her first screen role.

Just caught this film again recently, and was reminded of its greatness. A lot of people in this thread criticize Eric Roberts performance in this scene. It's an incredible performance. The context matters: The character Paulie is a logic-challenged man-child, completely anchored in the ways of his Italian-American neighborhood upbringing. He's just had his thumb cut-off as punishment for stealing from the neighborhood mob capo. He suffering from shock and an overdose of painkillers. And he's in turmoil because his 3rd cousin/best friend, the person he loves most in the world (Charlie), is also in danger from the same mob guy, because of his (Paulie's) bad choices and deception. These two characters are like brothers. Charlie is in fear over what Paulie might have said, he's angry because of what's happened to Paulie, and Paulie is crazily falling apart in front of him. And he was having a bad day before any of that. Great performances by two great actors. Both should have been nominated for their roles, and Roberts should have won an Oscar. It was his masterpiece performance. He made Paulie his own and it completely worked.

Completely agree. It seems that the Oscar Community (Judges and Academy) make certain that certain actors do long stretches before they "earn" the coveted gold statue. Some "wing it" on on one solitary performance that changes actors trajectory and some others have to go up a down hill to get to that award, even after making MILLIONS for the motion picture industry. Case in point: Martin Scorsese (Director), or a Jeff Bridges, Alan Arkin. etc., Other actors: Casey Affleck (insert eye roll here) , Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury) First Timers gets it and then there are people in the middle of their apex of their careers like Leonardo DiCaprio that gets it in the "right pocket" of time of their careers based on good solid acting in the past and solid parts and have a clear trajectory of greatness , no politics (excuse him for the "Wolf of Wall Street" over acting ): "Sell Me This Pen"....lol

In an Italian neighborhood of Greenwich Village, cousins Charlie (Rourke), a maître d'hôtel with aspirations of someday owning his own restaurant, and Paulie (Roberts), a schemer who works as a waiter, have expensive tastes but not much money. Paulie gets caught skimming checks, and he and Charlie are both fired. Now out of work and in debt, Charlie must find another way to pay his alimony, support his pregnant girlfriend Diane (Hannah), and try to buy a restaurant. Paulie comes to Charlie with a "can't-miss" robbery, involving a large amount of cash in the safe of a local business. Charlie reluctantly agrees to participate, and they manage to crack the safe with help from an accomplice, Barney (McMillan), a clock repairman and locksmith. But things go sour, resulting in the accidental death of police officer Walter "Bunky" Ritter, who had been secretly taping "Bed Bug" Eddie Grant (Young). Charlie soon learns that the money they stole belongs to Eddie. The mob figures out that Paulie is involved, and not even his Uncle Pete, part of Eddie's crew, can help him. Eddie's henchmen cut off Paulie's left thumb as punishment. Diane leaves Charlie and takes his money to support their unborn child, while Paulie is forced to work as a waiter for Eddie. He gives the mob Barney's name but initially refuses to identify Charlie as the third man involved. However, under pressure, he is forced to rat on his cousin. Barney leaves town and Charlie mails him his cut of the loot. And when Charlie makes $20,000 on a horse, things begin to look up. Charlie prepares for a showdown with Eddie, armed with a copy of the tape that the police officer made. But at the last moment, Paulie puts lye in Eddie's coffee. Then he and Charlie casually walk away from Greenwich Village.

Yes, he had a tendency to overact and does so in this scene but when he harnesses his immense talent and is in control, he literally dazzles the screen.

To those saying that Eric Roberts was over acting I say place yourself in his situation sans a thumb that was sliced off by Mafia goons, & ask yourself how you would react & behave under such circumstances? Eric Roberts nailed that character & scene as superbly as anyone could have, as well if not better than even Brando if that movie had been filmed back in the 50s or 60s. That scene alone was Oscar worthy, as was his powerhouse performance throughout the entire movie, including that of Mickey Rourke, both of whom were absolutely fantastic & riveting, from beginning to end. And Eric Roberts played this scene to perfection, as losing one's thumb under such circumstances would cause anyone to become dramatic & somewhat hysterical (if not full blown insane). Deserving of an Oscar Gold!

@@user-ey6vk5gu4oSuch nonsense! Paulie is an hectic high flyer and has a big mouth. Until this scene, we got to know him well enough. The way he plays the thumb scene is just a logical consequence of his character. If he had just sat there sobbing, it wouldn't be authentic. Both play their roles very Oscar-worthy. I would argue that neither a Pitt, a Depp nor a DiCaprio could have played the roles like that.

Just watched this the other day. I'm no movie expert by any means, and I love mob-gangster films. This is the only one of that kind that had me laughing my ass off and also teary eyed. When Burt Young drinks the laced espresso, lmfao! And when the safe-cracker is at the train station about to lam it, and his wife is there and she says how come nothing ever seems to work out. That got me good. All of us who've been barely able to make it, and can admit a lot of it was luck, can feel the pain for them because we know a lot of people just like us who tried their best but came up short. This is a beautiful film. That's just me.

Spot on. That part where he tells his wife “I wasn’t the smartest kid on the block” something like that. Idk. I’m about to watch it again for the 100th time. One of my top 10-20 favorites. 🎶the summer wind🎶 Never been to NY but this movie is how I imagine it, being from Cali it’s like another world

The guy in the Sherlock Holmes story "The Engineer's Thumb" didn't carry on like this! Watson gave him some brandy, cleaned and bandaged his hand, and then they ate breakfast. The guy said that completed the cure, and they went to find the counterfeiters!

Anyone think Roberts was over acting hasn't hung around the streets much. This scene was obviously well worked out, directed and rehearsed. Impressive performances from both actors; and this is the one that catapulted Rourke into super stardom - unfortunately. Rourke does chew up the furniture a bit, however. But hey, it's his character. "9 1/2 Weeks" would be next for Rourke, and the rest is history.

If you think Eric Roberts was not overacting but I don't value your opinion on anything. I understand if you say he was overreacting but I still liked it( like Jack Nicholson from The Shining) but to say he was not overacting makes you sound not intelligent.

@@winstonsmiththx1138 I can live with your personal opinion - you know nothing about me. You mention "The Shining," where Jack N. was overacting, obviously, but it works for the scene, movie. In this case, if you have ever been around people on a handful of drugs/vicodine (like Roberts was), you'd understand the sudden surge of emotion. NOT OVERACTED but drug fueled.
