It was also really clearly a bit. Like, Marisha imagines this (accurately) as a silly little wrap up scene. And then Matts like "lol no." It winds up making a good story, but I have had player quit over that kinda thing. That said, I often inflict "splattered" as a condition if a player falls more than 20d6 feet worth of damage. My favorite dnd experience was with a dying NPC that my DM had placed just to give exposition to the party. The DM did not expect us to save him evident by the name he provided when we asked... "Guy Everyman". Every single combat after that our wizard would without fail say "Guy! It's time to go Ape!" and proceed to Polymorph him into a Giant Ape. DM did not adjust the CR for things in the dungeon and we quite literally smashed through it.

Keyfish reference - the video is instantly gold! xD There are probably a billion builds for us in the future and you won't run out of ideas, but i throw a few more anyway. Been rewatching some of your old vids and it gave me a few ideas (and also forgotten promises): 1. the Gunslinger. Yes, sir Colbert, people haven't forgotten and still wait for boom-boom stick build. 2. the Brightest soul (or something like that, idk): in line with limited to specific damage type builds of old days, this one does only radiant damage. And that's kinda it. The name screams nova damage to me, but that's up to debate and the role actually can be whatever. 3. Something with the reborn lineage (since it's the only one lineage left from Ravenloft). There's probably something cool for Skill monkeys or death-related subclasses (Oathbreaker, Necromancer maybe?) from the lineage bonuses. Just don't your clerics get too close. 4. the Beauty and the Beast - another duo build, even tho they aren't that popular =(. This one is the Druid (the Beast) and a Charisma-based caster(the Beauty), who's the party' Face out of combat and whatever else in combat. 5. Is it too much to ask for more semi-official subclasses in builds? Arcane hand monke was amazing. Drakkenheim been added to DndBeyond a few months ago, Critrole been there for a while and other third party products probably are on DndBeyond too and listed as supplements or whatnot so it shouldn't be a problem for many tables to allow usage of these books.

Fun fact about goldfish cliff diving, 20d6 is the damage cap for fall damage, so there is no way to deal anything more than 120 damage from a single fall. That being said, sometimes it's fun to watch overconfidence crumble in the face of 363 points of fall damage.

Sidekick builds! I've waited so long for people to dive into sidekicks you can do so many cool things with them. you can optimize them to be on par or even better than some standard player options! I have to disagree with you on feats though, the feats rule says when your class gives you an ASI you can forgo that ASI to take a feat instead. Sidekicks get ASI's from thier class therefore they cam also sib them for feats. I've got 4 suggestions for sidekick builds a PHB Beast master ranger with giant poisonous snake warrior with the poisoner feat. Build 2 Dark Rider (oath breaker + Hex blade, order domain cleric 1) Paladin with Find steed as a warrior sidekick. 3 a fairy sidekick which knows polymorph be default and basically makes you a stronger druid at low levels and comes with tons of perks as you level up. 4 caviler fighter with a spellcaster worg mount for excellet tag teaming and overcoming the many short comings the caviler has.

Interesting take. I figured a sidekick could not take feats in place of ASIs as it is not listed as an option. I have an idea for a character with a sidekick, if the DM approves, I will ask about this. Thanx!

  • @ryanscanlon2151

@@ad9aggie yeah by RAW feats as a character option applies to anything that receives ASI's. The sidekicks even mention that a player can to choose to just be a full-time sidekick as their main character so it would be weird to not allow them feats too. And like I mentioned maybe you can't convince your DM to give sharpshooter or Great weapon master to a sidekick but dungeon delver and chef just make so much sense to have the side kick doing some of the more menial tasks around camp and between adventures so letting them take feats that help them do that seems like a no brainer.

The best bit of polymorph is its fairly early game and hugely versatile, the damage it can provide is nice sure. But you only need to turn yourself into something that solves a traversal problem, the opposing spell caster into something harmless, or pull a druid at range and provide a heap of HP on the party member who is about to die to see its huge value that won't show up on a spreadsheet of damage. Its a really great spell and building around it like this build concept has provided your party with a huge amount of free health - the loss of damage per round you cause personally compared to other optimal builds will in many cases be made up for by the tanky pile of hitpoints, that with the right beast choices brings other situational benefits on top and the reduction in resource consumption to heal after the fight. If I were to play this sort of concept I'd want my party to contain a beast master or similar fairly powerful pet - those pets are really useful but can be a bit prone to death, having a whole heap of extra HP on top.

Hey Colby, a cool interaction between Dhampir and Paladin is that you can Smite with your bite. To quote Dhampir, both from Ravnica and UA (UA basically records stuff to make it a proper beginning race, like taking away Ancestral Legacy and Deathless Nature to be classified as Undead, and that being pretty much the only and biggest change) "Your Teeth count as Simple Weapons" and says nothing about unarmed strikes, so basically any weapon buff that doesn't require a price of the weapon or a material other than bone, like Shelieghle with a wood weapon, you can use your bite as the replacement. So I'd love to see your take on The Divine Bite, and honestly the Watcher subclass for Paladin feels very Castlevainia Alucard, just ok with the DM to include Vampires if not undead in your list of diet favored foes to add to that Alucard flavor

Concentrating on a spell is much harder when polymorphed since your Con saves no longer benefit from proficiency and/or advantage (War Caster or Eldritch Mind), and you take a lot more hits in melee combat with 13 AC and no longer being able to cast the Shield spell. If you Polymorph the Wizard and yourself after they cast Wall of Force to block off half of the enemies, you might both say "we're gods" while charging into battle just to find that you're no longer T Rexes and the wall went down so you're now surrounded.

At my table i allow my players a number of Sidekick levels equal to their player level. They can distribute these to several different Sidekicks or into one single sidekick. The choice is theirs; To reclaim sidekick levels the sidekick must be either killed, or leave the group for an extended timeframe. If a wizard wants their familiar to be the sidekick they 100% can but it still follows all the familiar rules. Same with beast masters, and artificers. Drake warden rangers, and wildfire druid. Summoned creatures still require themselves to be summoned, such as the wildfire spirit, or the new Beastmaster companion. You can even give these levels to a spell's summon; granting the stat block enhancements when you summon it; BUT its still restricted behind the spell and follows all other guidelines

Interesting, and I like it. Though I am not sure the 'still follows the ____ rules' is always going to be the right option, might generate some tricky grey areas and more importantly doesn't seem the best for balance - a sidekick level of survivable applied to a familiar I'd argue is on the whole a way more powerful bigger upgrade than the other subclass pet options becoming sidekicks. I think for that reason following your number of levels of sidekick a wizard familiar should probably count as 2 levels spent per level, or perhaps the others should count for half. But I've never actually run sidekicks in any of my games, so wouldn't say I have a good feel for it - not opposed to the idea, but the players I tend to have would rather only have one focus - their own skills.

A familiar can't attack but can still hide in it's pocket dimension and deliver touch spells. Basically you just add the sidekick template over the creature. I don't know how a familiar sidekick is more powerful than a Beast Master's summoned beast, or a Necromancer's summoned skeleton.

@@justthecraft Familiar are sneeze on and they 'die', but can do alot for you, giving them the sidekick stat block suddenly they won't just die for being looked at funny. Its a massive massive step up, where if anything the Steel Defender and Beast master options being sidekicks and yet still obeying all the usual rules for them really isn't gaining much if anything, and likely works out much weaker than the generic warrior sidekick and normal subclass pet... Obviously there is some scaling variation possible, but on the whole it is clearly a big step up for the familiar, and really doesn't do much for the others.

I run a lot of one-on-one D&D games for people who can't do groups well for one reason or another. And sidekicks are profoundly indispensable. Honestly, they give the player a lot of versatility and control. I also rarely cap the number of sidekicks a player can have (and make them diverse, using monster stat blocks for some, the actual sidekick rules, or encouraging them to make the character a PC class whose level is permanently half of the main PCs rounded down. So, if a character is a eleventh level their sidekick can only be fifth level or lower). The best part about a sidekick is that if that player does want someone else to join in to test out the game (this happens occasionally as well) sidekicks are great stand in characters that the player can just use and abuse. In one of my games, the Player Character was playing a vagrant and the other twelve sidekicks she had where parts of her band of wanderers who joined her. I also like Sidekicks for group play but I am a bit more restrictive once you have multiple other players involved. I will never let there be more sidekicks than there are players. If it makes sense for a character to have multiple sidekicks, I allow them to have multiple but never more than two at a table. So, let's say I have a party of four, the table can't have more than four sidekicks. If someone doesn't want a sidekick, another player can have their share. So, in a game I ran there where three players and only one player wanted sidekicks, so he got two of them (with an open slot for someone else down the line) Sidekicks can add layers to the game in a way that is both fun and refreshing narratively. But its very important that the player knows what their sidekick is about and isn't hogging the limelight in combat with them. If a player can't handle it, I take control of them or offer control to someone else if they want it. Otherwise, if it's clear they won't improve in playing the sidekick in combat, I just retire the sidekick (or kill them narratively!) In short, I am one of the strong proponents of the sidekick. They're great. I wish more DMs used them. There are lots of little tips and tricks you can do to alter the balance and make smaller parties feel responsible for a much larger group. It's great. I love them, I am sorry this post is so long I just really wanted to talk about sidekicks, and I am happy SOMEONE is talking about them now. So good!

Polymorph is ideal to cast on yourself as a wizard who has cast a strong spell that synergizes with grapple. (The best is wall of fire if you are a scribes wizard) Since becoming an ape gives you very strong ability to grapple and very good spellslotless damage compared to cantrips with its rock action. This can be ideal if you commonly use alot of spells on setup, or just want to save them until your first polymorph gets used up.

There's also a clarification from Jeremy Crawford on how a creature takes damage from "entering" the beam: "Our design intent for such spells is this: a creature enters the area of effect when the creature passes into it. Creating the area of effect on the creature or moving it onto the creature doesn't count. If the creature is still in the area at the start of its turn, it is subjected to the area’s effect. Entering such an area of effect needn't be voluntary, unless a spell says otherwise. You can, therefore, hurl a creature into the area with a spell like thunderwave. [...] Keep in mind, however, that a creature is subjected to such an area of effect only the first time it enters the area on a turn. You can't move a creature in and out of it to damage it over and over again on the same turn.”

This is a cool video. Lots of info on both Polymorph and sidekicks. If I played this up to 16/17 and got the fly speed, I would definitely go back to Polymorphing myself. Then you bite and grapple an enemy, give yourself a fly speed and fly up in the air a few rounds and then sneeze. My concern at my tables is that even though Polymorph doesn't break concentration, I think my DMs would all ask me how a low intellect creature would "remember to concentrate" on the spell after Polymorph hit. They probably wouldn't ask the question for me maintaining concentration on Polymorph, cause that's kind of the point of the spell; it would be more for when I Polymorph another caster concentrating on, say, Spirit Guardians. They would ask me to explain a T-Rex thinking, "I better concentrate on this Spirit Guardians spell". Still a cool video and fun idea. Might try it for a one-shot.

WOTC's MTG team, while not considered official 5e, did release the Plane Shift series and Zendikar, Ixalan, and Kaladesh have a few options too

This sounds like a way fun build! I totally wish there was a weaker version of Polymorph that you could get as a 2nd or 3rd lvl spell just to help the play style come online faster but I am totally going to use this at my table. I would probably not take resilient wisdom though just because while polymorphed I would have a low wisdom in general.

Love moving the membership plug later. If I ever had a complaint about you videos, it would be that you stack all the promotional stuff early on and that usually gets me to fast skip to level one tag (sooooorry). As for character background, I am actually currently playing this subclass combo. My reasoning, story wise, is that my character has been trying to figure out who gave him his divine soul powers....aaand a genie patron tricked him into believing that the genie knew the answer for his question, and in actuality only gave him more questions xD

I love Divine Soul Sorcerer as a play option IF you have access to spell scrolls that can be purchased. Then you look for all the expansion spell options you can MI: Bard, Coeric, Sorcerer, and Warlock; Fey/Shadow touched; telepathic/telekinetic. That is just the stuff that plays well with CHA I suspect that I could take a feat every level and still not get all the ones that would work.

Last session I morphed our Barbarian into “The Leviathan of Icewind Dale” ie a Sperm Whale while he was mid jump so he belly flopped onto a swarm. Our Wizard cast fly on him and he swallowed most of the foes, tale swatted the rest. Just continuously soaked damage. I promised it would not be a go to strategy, but still hilarious.

ב"ה When I saw the headline for the video I first thought it was a tank build (an abjuration wizard that polymorph itself for extra HP, and cast polyorph over and over again when he return to his normal form for a ton of HP). About 7th level slots, maybe most sorcerer and cleric 7th level spells either require concentration or are bad spells (not sure about firestorm), but no doubt a 7th level spell slot used to upcast heal (for 80 HP heal) is pretty powerfull.

You mention taking tough a couple times as a good fallback feat for defensiveness. I would like to take a moment to make the case that tough is actually not very good compared to the other available options in practical play. Notably the Chef and Inspiring Leader feats, but to a lesser extent the Healer feat. Tough increases your max HP by twice your level, which is decent, but once you've taken twice your level in damage you must spend resources like spell slots or hit dice to refill them, and you don't increase your short rest recovery at all. So for a lvl 17 character effectively tough gives +34 HP per day. This also notably does not effect the HP of a polymorphed or wild shaped creature. Taking a look at Inspiring Leader it gives lvl+charisma temp HP to yourself as a 10 min cast, however it can also effect up to 6 creatures and CAN be used on a polymorphed creature. Assuming a common party size of 4, a single use of inspiring leader by a lvl 17 CHA 13 character gives the party +72 HP, and this can be refreshed between most encounters, if on a moderate day of 4 encounters it would be reasonable to assume you can use this at the start of the day and after at least 2 of the encounters giving yourself 54 additional HP over the day or 216 HP across the party. Now sure not all of the temp HP will be used every time before refreshing, but this clears the effective daily HP of Tough by a factor of 1.5 in solo play and 6 in an average size party while not putting increased resource drain on your party's HD or spell slots. Take a look at Chef and it too out does tough in most situations. First it is a half feat boosting either CON or WIS two of the most important save attributes. For sake of argument here we'll be assuming the character got a CON bump for these numbers. The feat gives you cookies you can make one a long rest or 1 hour of time. You make prof bonus cookies and the give prof bonus temp HP. So out of the gate our level 17 example character gets +17 max HP and 36 temp HP they can distribute among the party as they see fit. However if you have the time to short rest the feat also gives up to 10 creatures an extra 1d8 healing. Most adventuring days have enough time for at least one short rest and you could probably make at least one batch of cookies somewhere in the day, maybe during the short rest if the GM allows it. So with our party of 4 you would get an average effective HP boost of 107HP (+17max+4d8+72temp) which is 3x the effective HP of tough, and you get the ribbon feature of cook's utensils prof. The only real advantage Tough has here is if you are frequently being reduced from full to zero HP in a single encounter, and even then it is a tough sell.

Colby, Can you make a "barbarian hidden in obscurity"? DnDdaily has made a ranger/rogue with blindfighting that hides in fog cloud and I want to know how you could do this with a raging barbarian. (Bonus points if it's a flying race that uses a polearm. {You might want to take a look at the Hoopak to sneak attack when they enter your reach}) Pyrotechnics is a second lvl spell that provides heavy obscurement without concentration, so you can cast spell hide, rage and attack get back in and hide again. (Swashbuckler seems good for this, especially if you are taking it from bard or sorcerer) Artificer would not be a bad choice either. If you aren't raging you could combine the whack-a-mole with a concentration spell including haste, ashardalons stride or if they get it spirit shroud. I would love to see what you would do with it. 😊😊😊

Currently my char is a lvl 5 Genie warlock (Marid), and I'm considering taking a 3 level dip into probably Lunar Sorcerer. (The character is heavily water themed, she also happens to be a Water Genasi.) Also grabbing Metamagic Adept gives me 5 SP (mostly for Quickening EB, I'm thinking. Just not sure if it's worth it. It's funny, I'm playing a character with a sidekick from the get go. I'm a swarmkeeper ranger with a pet baby giant bat who'll grow over the course of the campaign. I decided on wanting a sidekick rather than being a beastmaster because the beastmaster's beast never grows large enough for you to ride, and I want to do that, at least at the end. I'm paying for it by taking every animal-adjacent spell the ranger can get - Speak With Animals is what lets them get sidekick levels in the first place, and I'm going to take the Eldritch Adept: Beast Speech feat once I hit level 4, so I can always talk with them.
