"Caught between Scylla and Charybdis" may be one of the most cerebral lyric in a rock song. It refers to two monsters from Greek mythology and it basically means caught between a rock and a hard place.

As well as the Germanic mythology of Faust selling his soul to the devil Mephistopheles for-knowledge and power. Definitely the obscure genius in this song is Sting's creativity in his lyric writing, as we all know, the accessible genius with all three of those guys use of their instruments is easy for us all to recognize, fortunately.

Sting wrote such brilliant lyrics. There are so many examples of it in their songs. I saw an interview with Stewart Copeland (the brilliant and extremely talented drummer of The Police) who said back in the day, he just played the drums. All these years later, he actually listened to the lyrics of their songs and realized how brilliant Sting really was, when he thought about what it all meant.

I wish Andy Summers received more props for his contribution to this band. Yes, Sting is a Genius and Stewart Copeland is the top in a class of his own... there's no denying that. Andy is incredible and I've always loved his purposeful, delicate strumming and picking. Who else feels me in this?

The lyrics, “Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes” refers to two mythological monsters that occupied either side of a narrow strait that Odysseus had to pass through. One was a beast with sharp teeth and the other caused whirlpools. Both would mean death for the sailor and his crew. It has become an idiom meaning to choose the lesser of two evils.

Lots of layers of meaning to this one. Here is a Sting quote: This song is vaguely alchemical and probably about a friend of mine, a professional psychic and my tutor in tarot, with bits of Doctor Faustus and The Sorcerer's Apprentice thrown into the pot for good measure. - Sting, Lyrics by Sting

Jamel… This is what happened. They did the video and after they thought it was completed Sting hated it. He told everyone to leave except for the cameramen. He added candles and other stuff then redid the video … and what you see is Sting’s version. All of it was done with him and his ideas… enjoy… oh and they didn’t know he was going to knock over the candles… he shocked the hell out of everyone

The entire construction of the lyrics of this song is masterful poetry. This was the most cerebral that The Police ever were. If they were gonna go out on a bang on their last album, they certainly achieved it. The whole album Syncronicity is a piece of audio perfection, most especially this song. Got more than one copy on vinyl including the rare purple, nearly black version. Had it on cassette and on CD back in the day too.

You should read about how they got the effect in this video. If I remember correctly, they played the song at a fast speed, and Sting danced around to it. Then they slowed it down to the regular speed and synced it. It’s pretty facinating.

Before that they were known from the band 10 CC, drummer vocalist and guitarist vocalist respectively. Bed's Too Big Without You" - mono version please ! It truly sums up what the band was about in 1979 - 1980.

I always enjoy your views on music Mr Jamal. I would find it interesting if you evaluated song lyrics as well, as Stings genius in lyric writing is often obscured by the hypnotic music. I would recommend you look into the lyrics of this song. The references to Greek & medieval mytholog, and how the mythological characters experiences relate to the message of this song, is about as creative as it gets. Lastly, you'll find the message in this song is quite cold and calculated as the 'servant' turns things around on the 'master'. Peace, my brother!
