The Police Ghost in the Machine [1981]
The Police released their 4th album in October of 1981, at this point they were already superstars both in the UK and the US.
This album features a bit of a new sound for the band, using more synths and horns - leaving behind their spare open sound for a more layered one. The reggae influences are still strong although the guitar is not as prominent as on previous records.
Ghost in the Machine was supported by some amazing singles - including the smash (and one of jenna's personal faves) "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic", "Spirits in the Material World" and "Invisible Sun".
It's definitely the most different sound from all of their other albums.
Also very interesting to discuss the track listing, and the brand new picture disc released with the alternate track sequence. This album is a great example of how important song sequencing can be for a record.
Please let us know what you think of this album! We love comments.
Hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching :)

Secret Journey to me is the most underrated song by The Police. Love the keyboards on the intro.

What a fortunate concert experience to have seen XTC before they gave up touring. I wish I saw that coming. What a double bill that must have been!

Interesting information about the album sequencing. I never knew! I've always felt this was one of the better albums by The Police as I find the songs consistently better than on other records. But I'm just a casual fan so people shouldn't take my opinion to heart.

I totally understand what you guys mean about track sequence. I have made playlists of some of my favorite bands albums that I felt like the track sequence weakened the effect of the album.

This is what I would consider a top heavy album. It starts and finishes strong and has some of the best Police tracks out there.(Invisible Sun, Secret Journey, Darkness) I would concur with the "redundancy", and I particularly do not care for the use of wind instruments on this release. Say, have you guys heard Stewart Copeland's solo material, under the pseudonym Klark Kent? He plays all the instruments and handles all the vocals. The album Kollected Works includes most of his essential material. Thanks for the review.

The emergence of the horn section during the tour courtesy of The Chops was the beginning of the end. A completely alien concept which had absolutely nothing to do with the sound of the police and marks the dominance of stings creative control from his days in a jazz band in Newcastle Ironically, two of the best Police songs of all time are Darkness and Omegaman. - ironically those written by Stewart and Andy!

Favorite band and album. Never get tired of Ghost. Many of the songs still resonate today and are relevant for the times we are living in. The alternate sequence is nice I like it. Sound quality of picture disc is not very good unfortunately.

Invisible Sun was “grunge” 10 years before Grunge. I could imagine that being on Nevermind by Nirvana. The Abbey Road 1/2 Speed is supposed to sound incredible.

@@statesandkingdoms Lots of grunge had two chords for the verses, then a heavy chorus. Something in the way by Nirvana springs to mind. Invisible has the two chord slide then it descends into another two chord chorus. It’s about Northern Ireland, there was footage of the armed forces in the video. 1981 was a bad year as hunger strikers died in prison. I think the BBC banned the video at the time.

It’s not even Sting playing bass on the album on Demolition Man. Danny has to record the bass part due to Stings bass playing having been "too sloppy" to be worthy of inclusion on the album. Ironically Danny never got any recognition on the album sleeve

Ghost in the Machine is my favourite album from The Police because of its bubbly production, more diverse influences with the addition of sax and synths, and the overall vibe that darkens somewhat at times, however I recognize that it is the tracklist which poses a real problem because of certain pieces too linear in their arrangements ("Hungry For You", "Too Much Information" and "Rehumanize Yourself") plus some which are way too long for what they are ("Demolition Man" and "One World" that drags on), but anyway the alternate-sequence album doesn't solve that problem at all from my point of view (as good as the three added single B-sides are). I find the first three songs ("Spirits in the Material World", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and "Invisible Sun") are perfect in their original order of appearance, as are the three songs that close the album ("Ωmegaman", "Secret Journey" and "Darkness") are ideal in this configuration. What doesn't work for me is the album's soft belly in its middle ("Hungry For You", "Demolition Man", "Too Much Information", "Rehumanize Yourself" and "One World"). Maybe the order of these tracks should have been rearranged keeping "Demolition Man" at the end of side one and "Too Much Information" at the beginning of side two which works pretty well, but swapping "Hungry For You " by "Rehumanize Yourself" on side one and vice versa on side two. I don't know if the result is very conclusive because if it works with "Rehumanize Yourself" as the penultimate track on side one, whether "Hungry For You" precedes "Demolition Man" or "One World", there isn't much variation in the end. There is also the case of "Someone To Talk To" (not retained for the album in Alternate Sequence) composed and sung by Andy Summers, which is another single b-side released in 1983 (as "Once Upon a Daydream") but which always seemed to me to belong to the Ghost in the Machine sessions, both its style , its sounds and its instrumentation are similar to it (we can even hear that famous saxophone which Sting played on the 81 album).
