The Police "Bring On The Night" guitar lesson. The next Riff of the Day uses the analog EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress flanger and the Xotic EP Booster for a vintage Andy Summers tone. The main melody uses some fast arpeggios but in an easy to learn pattern with only the D&B strings fretted, while the high E is open. The chorus switches from classical style to reggae and uses some minor7th chords to give it that distinct Police sound. This song is not as easy as it seems so we suggest starting with the finger picking pattern in just one position and slowly work your way to the changes. Enjoy your Riff of the Day guitar lesson!

+Chris Garr that´s true. Sting composed this song and many others, but actually, I´m referring to the Andy´s playing style. Maybe Sting influenced him , or maybe he put his style in Sting´s song. The fact is if you hear this you remember Andy Summers. The Police was unique because of three people with remarkable styles of playing and singing.

Thanks for posting! Learning this song on drums and guitar at the moment. Stumbling on this video helped tremendously. The musicianship of these guys is mind boggling. Especially how they write sophisticated songs mainstream friendly. My favorite band of all time as a drummer and guitarist!

I hope when musicians see this, everyone will see and hear the necissity of fingerpicking expanding one's abilities greatly of adding expression and subtleties to ones playing, a great demonstration,Vic.

One of the thing I love it's the entire melody played at the beginning of the video (in a lot of tutorials it's at the end or not at all) and the explanations to have the same sound like in the original song in the description wich is very rare in this kind of vidéo. In addition the explanations are clear... I saw many tutorials on YT but those of this channel borders on perfection :D

If you don't know how to play fingerstyle just simply practice. It's an important part of guitar. I couldn't do it for years then I got to the point where I really wanted to be a more versatile, well rounded guitar player so I just kept doing it over and over then my picking fingers blistered then calised over and I got good at it. I almost always exclusively play finger style when playing acoustic now. And I can play a ton more of material more accurate now on acoustic and electric. It also allowed me to dabble more in other genres of Music such as Bluegrass, Country, Folk, Spanish & Roll Flamingo styles. Not that those are my primary preferences of Music but the more you expand your skill the better you are at what you do play because you can incorporate those styles into any music especially Rock & Roll.

i know that Andy played it exactly like that. But i found it much easier to play it starting on fret 5 and on the higher 3 strings. since i'm not a guitarplayer - can anybody tell me the reason why Andy played it in on the higher frets? Is it just sound ???

So I’ll try to be as brief as I can because I have a bad habit of writing my life story before I get to the point of what I’m saying. But that’s just my way I guess, I say it how it is in the best possible taste so I’m satisfied that you can see where I’m coming from. So I’ve finally got myself a guitar it’s an electric squire bullet Stratocaster and it arrived yesterday. I’m a complete novice and some might say I’ve taken my time to make the jump and start learning to play seeing as I’m 51. I think though most would agree that it’s never too late to learn. Right?. So obviously I’m a big fan of music and I’ve got to the point where I’m like you love music so much its a little bit crazy that I don’t play any instrument. So I’ve got the guitar and I’m sourcing out a bunch of apps to help teach me how to play and also what I can find on KZread and even going old school and buying books. I figured while I’m learning the basics and going through each lesson at a time I thought for a little side line why not find how to play Bring on the night. I realise for a total beginner that I’m being a little hasty trying to learn how to play that song when I can’t even play a cord yet, literally. but it’s like a little treat/ target/reward for me and something to keep me even more motivated. Because not only do I think the police are brilliant bring on the night is one of my favourite songs and that guitar at the start is something special for me. So for me to actually be able to play it would be massive for me. Ok I think you should know where I’m coming from so here’s my question for you and you might laugh here because you do give all the information needed to play the song but do you have a beginners version of learning how to play this song . With a little more breakdown in stages. This is what I mean by laughing because you have broken it down and brilliantly I might add . I think it’s for a more advanced player and I’d understand it if I was told I was being impatient and trying to run before I could walk and they would be right. However like I said before it’s just a little something to practice on the side as a little treat so if you could either point me in the right direction or if you have any beginner lessons and specifically for this song that would be awesome. If not would it be a good idea to buy a book of police songs. If you have got to here then I really appreciate you taking the time to read this. I know I do go on a bit 😂 ✌🏽

Andy actually did keep his pick in his mouth when he played this live. Check out the video of their concert in Frejus. Using your nails still works just fine, but Andy probably wanted that extra crispness of the pick.
