The Point: Cross-Straits relations in the eyes of a Taiwan-based political scholar

For more:
www.cgtn.com/v...
What is behind the rising tensions across the Taiwan Straits? Why are many people on the island afraid of identifying themselves publicly as Chinese? CGTN's Liu Xin had a talk with Lai Yueh-tchienn, a well-known Taiwan-based political scholar, to find out the reasons behind these strange phenomena. Liu started by asking about the cyber violence targeting pro-reunification voices.

I am from Vancouver,Canada and i wanted to say that this is a good speech by the Taiwan Person. He is telling the Truth about China and Taiwan. Here in Canada the Canadian Gov't don't tell the truth about Taiwan and China. Taiwan is part of China and this should be said by the Canadian Gov't but instead the Canadian Gov't lies about it and says Taiwan is Independent. I supports the one China Policy.China is doing the right thing and explaining this to the people in Taiwan. Canada, USA and Europe are making problems in China and they have been condemned for that. China got many friends in the world and China is helping the Developing Countries something which the Collective West never did. That is why the Developing Countries are leaving the West behind and joining the BRICS Countries. The People of Taiwan are lied to by the present Gov't of Taiwan and hopefully a new Gov't will come to Taiwan in the next election and then this problem will be solved.

I'm an avid follower of his program on a Taiwan's TVB political show daily (新聞大白話@tvbstalk). I think the problems with Taiwan is their new-gen, started during the Chen Sui-pian era. Their education system, especially the history of civil war have been distorted, white washed by the Democratic Progressive Party then. I see the real problems looming becos those pro-China citizens there are all in their late 50s to 60s and the number are in dwelling state. If the Korean war had not been started, Taiwan would have been taken back by the CCP. Their general election is on the way, and if the DPP wins again, I see there is not way Taiwan unites with the mainland. With the US taking Taiwan as proxy, I believe "Force-Unification" is the only way.

That’s why USA so bankrupt, by funding massive troll farms, color revolutions overthrowing regimes around the world, and massive war propaganda fear mongering and hate mongering the same Nazi style of war propangada slandering the Jews as “evil”, “threat to Germany’s survival”, and “culprits for all of Germany’s problems” to make pretext for the Holocaust. Same kind of Nazi German war propangada, just as the Bible prophesy talks about wars and rumors of wars in the end times. Rumors of wars come from the media and funded channels. The Department of War in USA is bankrupting the country by funding these info war propaganda. The media path ways for wars.

DPP is a U$ led party which sеrves the U$ interest. The more the U$ meddle, the least people will support their party. The most important thing here is to still the same - counter the wide-spread anti-Сhinese propaganda on the island. So invest more in this regard. And in the Сhinese people living there. Because the improvement of the cross-Straits relations comes through improving the relations between the people on the both sides of the strait. So increase and improve your student exchange programs, organize mutual events, implement business incentives etc. etc. etc.

That is correct that is why the current DPP government rejected the latest Chinese offer to integrate a chinese city with Taiwan economically which would have benefited both not only economically but socially. The guest speaker here is correct that the DPP and the U.S is trying to separate social relations between the mainland and taiwan to suit their agenda because if both side has more contact then there will be more understanding instead of all the stereotyping insults some people just hurls around with in ignorance. They want to use fear and anger at China to get their party get elected. I mean the U.S does not even hide it anymore. Starting last year they keep saying Taiwan is an important part of their strategy to contain China. Something they used to deny and said it is just China being paranoid lol.

Well, hopefully all the pressure that's been brewing in Hong Kong since 2014 has now been released with Britain taking quite a large group of BNO holders. It's quite the good compromise, I'd say. If they didn't like how things were then they have the chance to try their luck in Western democracy.

The sad thing is that I have never in my life met another group of people who are as warm and welcoming than those living in Taiwan. Unfortunately, with this openness comes naivety. During the South East Asia scam ring incident, the majority of the people ended up being conned to work in Myanmar were from Taiwan. It's not to hard to imagine that a lot of these people, especially the young ones would also be easily coerced into believing something false and radical. Being geographically isolated on an island might also be a factor. Even people from Hong Kong or Macau can cross the border into China whenever to reconnect while the people in Taiwan had to take a plane. The fact that they don't have much real exposure to other countries also meant they have no idea how different they are to the rest of the world and how similar they are with people on the mainland.

  • @onestraw-zx1ph
    @onestraw-zx1ph10 ай бұрын

Very informative discussion. Thank you very much. I've come to realize that when people get factual information, they do tend to act in ways which contradict their unfounded prejudices. For example: when Chinese in the mainland are now living longer that their American counterparts, does it make sense to say that there is repression of human rights in China compared to the USA? OR the fact that homelessness is rampant in the USA, but hardly existent in China---is there more democracy in the America, since homelessness is a choice? When faced with these everyday facts, undistorted by media and educational institutions, I am betting that the Chinese in Taiwan will see through the LIES and reunite with their mainland brothers and sisters without second thoughts.

    1) Just because the majority population of Singapore are ethnically Chinese (and actually continues to speak one of Chinese dialects), it doesn't mean they can't refer to themselves as Singaporean. 2) Just because the majority population of Singapore descended from China, it doesn't mean they need to re-unify with China. And if there are Chinese Singaporeans pushing for China to annex ("re-unify") Singapore, why can't the Singaporean govt and its people fight against it? 3) Hypothetically, if Singapore were in Taiwan's shoes, ask Singaporeans if they want to re-unify with China? Or, would there be a mass exodus similar to what happened in Hong Kong over the past few decades. Singapore is full of Chinese money and new Chinese immigrants in the past decade. I am sure they all want to "re-unify" with Beijing. LOL. 4) People in Taiwan today are different from the Chiang Kai Shek WW2 years. Why shouldn't education be changed? Why should people in Taiwan be indoctrinated with the fantasy of "taking back" China from the Communists? The old curriculum in the KMT days are seriously laughable. They make you believe KMT govt is the rightful govt for all of China including Mongolia and one day they will take it back from the "back-stabbing communist bandits." The new generation in Taiwan want peace and democracy and like to elect their own leaders. What's wrong with that? They don't want to be governed by laws created in Beijing nor by someone selected by CCP. What's so hard to understand? It is not propaganda. It is common sense. 5) China needs to stop looking at the past. Look to the future, focus on your people. Taiwan left, leave them alone. I'd say the same to the UK if they are trying to reclaim the British empire where the sun never sets.

Japanese first emperor Jimmu is the same person as Xu Fu who came from China. Japanese culture is a Chinese Tang Dynasty culture replica. Google search for “Japanese missions to imperial China” and “Japanese missions to Tang Dynasty”. Japan, Korea and Vietnam are collectively called the Sinosphere. China is the mother country and culture of these nations.

It's actually very simple. China: Do you want to be part of mainland China or be independent? Taiwan: We are an indepedent sovereign nation. CCP should take note of this and not force their will upon others.

You don’t see that you are being used by the US imperialists to control the region. Study the Ukraine war carefully. Study the US mode of operandi in destroying nations! Don’t be naive!

You just typed up your comment without watching the video, expressing your predisposed opinion. The scholar already said that there is those who support independence but they know that will entice war with Mainland (refer to Chinese Civil war and no there is no peace treaty signed yet). The majority people living in Taiwan know that their culture, language, beliefs all identify as Chinese so majority want to keep the current status, and that is the majority's will. Same question, if I were to go ask Hawaiian and some wanted to be independent, so should the US gov not force their will upon others?

CIA paid troll spotted. Those who want independence can leave Taiwan province. We keep the land and kick the traitors and troublemakers out. They don’t want to be part of China, they leave IN PERSON but leave the land behind. They get out of Taiwan the land and go all independent all they want.

If Taiwan doesn't want reunified with china then Taiwan must gave back Matsu and Kinmen which was part of fujian. Then Taiwan must stopped using Chinese language and even all Chinese cultures must not be used by Taiwan.

Taiwan people must not used Chinese writing, language, culture, tradition and create their new writing and tradition. Chinese tradition and culture was only for Chinese people. If Taiwan doesn't want to be called Chinese then they must stopped using all Chinese cultures, tradition, as in all related to the Chinese must be abandoned by Taiwan.
