THE PLACE THAT BROKE & STOLE OUR HEARTS | 📍: MABUL ISLAND 🇲🇾 (& goodbye Malaysia... for now)

It was hard to make this video...
We've never felt this way about a place before. Mabul honestly broke our hearts on day 1, but it felt so much different after our short 3 days on the island.
We hope you understand where this video is coming from. In the end, we are grateful for the time we spent there and cannot wait to be back next year so we can dive in Sipadan 🇲🇾 (one of the best diving spots in the world, very close to Mabul). All we want for Mabul is to thrive, so we hope this video creates some kind of awareness at least.

Honestly this is a problem that the world is responsible for .. yes locals and yes neighbour's as well. Not sure if it's still current practice but allot of the soft plastics from western countries that are said to be recycled were actually being sent to places like Malaysia to dispose of somehow. Often times luxuries come with a price to someone or somewhere else . I believe that we as a world need to be more proactive in general and ban all unnecessary plastics as this is a huge problem for the whole world. The big companies making money while putting this packaging out into the world should hopefully somehow feel some remorse from seeing instances like this. I've enjoyed some of your videos so far. Will check out more. My one Coment is , if you need someone to help with pronunciation, reach out anytime . The food video had few mistakes that could have made that one more epic. And cendol would taste much better if it were all mixed up first . Was never traditionally sold in a cup . Usually a bowl to make it easy to mix. If ur back in KL. Let me know, I can show you some important food spots

I know right! Its been around 10 years ago that I went to Mabul Island and like both of you, its the place that stole & broke my Hearts. I've also watch some of NGOs vlog/private group/divers conduct cleaning campaign like, picking the trash and so, but sadly things seems not improving much. The trash might come from the resident and some are believe been brought from the sea and trashing the area when low tide. its good that you highlight the issue with a `respectful' words and hope our government can do something to improve the matter.

You felt the same way ❤️ Mabul is such a special place. It's nice to see that they're doing beach clean-ups but if there's no education or real trash collection, it doesn't do much for long... and yes, also the trash from other countries is a real issue, and it sucks that Mabul pays for that :( We hope things improve and hope to be back and do more 🙏🏼

cant agreed more. As a Malaysian, i just went to Mabul, sipadan for 1st time over the last 37 yrs last year for diving with such high anticipation. But was so so so sad and disappointed when i 1st step into the 'sea'. rubbish covering the water surface through out our boat journey to our basic resort in Mabul. We stayed in the far end of the 'water bungalow' btw. but the feeling changed when we see how pretty the underwater is and all the turtles and loving the vibes there as the nights went by.... somehow u will still fall in love with this place. so the disappointment slowly converting to unwillingness to leave the island. am hoping our Government in Sabah do do smth and act fast before its too late.

Rubbish is an international NIMBY problem. It’s our problem. Just returned from Mantanani. Saw the same there. Not on the private beach, it gets cleared up, but elsewhere. Some of it I suspect is locally generated but for the most part I think it washes up. We all need to do our part. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Love the content, BTW.

The next island for both of you to go is Sipadan Island. Once you've experienced Sipadan, both of you will definitely forget what you saw at Mabul. As for the Sea Gypsy people you mentioned, they're called "Pela'u" (Pe laa uuh) meaning the Sea people in Bajau Semporna language. The Pela'u is the real native Bajau in Semporna and surrounding areas instead of being labelled as stateless people.

  • @Cahayamata2

Thank you for this video. Yes, unfortunately, trash is a huge problem on these islands. There's just no awareness, especially among the Bajau Laut (some Malaysians are like that too, be it in the east or west of Malaysia), & that's really sad. Some kind of incentives need to be put in place to encourage them to not throw their trash in the ocean. A once-in-a-while cleanup won't do any good if trash is back in the ocean again the next day. Added to the Bajau Laut people being stateless, it's a politically touchy subject. Thank you to the resort managers that are working together to resolve this problem. The people living in these water villages are not locals, but illegal immigrants. That’s why they are living above the sea and not on land (because they have no legal identification, no jobs, don’t pay taxes etc). Their home countries (Philippines and Indonesia), have always rejected them since ages ago. So what more can the Malaysian govt do? Since their population is increasing every year. Now Sabah has become the state with the highest number of illegal immigrants (more than 1 million people).

  • @robbatinkoff2586

The trash issue is very saddening. I remember in 2021 the state government already took some actions to clean up the trash but too bad… the local people don’t really learn anything. The government seriously need to spend extra money on the people on the island to educate them. Illegal immigrations is a very sensitive subject in Sabah, most politicians use it to get votes but never really take any actions to address the issue.

THANK YOU SO MUCH 🥹❤️ You brought a big smile to both of our faces... funny story: we're at the Rome airport right now and had to pay 15 EUR p/p to check in for our flight on one of those budget airlines and were like, well this sucks... and just sat down to reply to comments and we see this... THANK YOU, really ❤️

One thing I must say about the trash problem..as I can see in other videos about this problem is that the trash doesn't necessarily come from the people of mabul..it can be a problem of trash "imported" from other countries ie trash floated there from elsewhere..it even happens to uninhabited island as seen in other documentaries regarding this matter and I'm giving the benefit of the doubt the islander there purposely doesn't care about the island they are living in..by the way..I don't see any mentioning of the "thrash imported from other countries"..may be u can set the record straight on this matter..see ya

  • @waysoftheworld_

It's def a mix. Education for the people on the island is absolutely necessary. We saw a lot of people dumping everything on the floor, there's no trash collection... it's a mix.

@@arshatarifin7442 Why are you blaming this on other countries? Mabul Island is located quite far from the Philippines and Indonesia. The trash obviously come from the local communities. Maybe it’s time for us to really address the issue instead of deflecting and blaming it on everyone but ourselves. You can’t solve a problem without looking at the root of the problem.

Hi, I am currently planning my trip to Malaysia and the content you are making is so helpful! Thanks a lot! When I looked at the travel advice of the Dutch government, they say not to visit islands like Mabul, Sipadan, Mataking, etc, because of the chances of kidnapping and piracy. Did you feel safe while travelling there or did you hear any stories about this? Thank you in advance!

Hi! Another Dutchie 💞 G is Dutch too! Anyways, lol yes. That's fairly common to hear. To be honest, and I'm just quoting what people told us... the kidnappers are a thing of the past and they were just targeting Chinese tourists 🙈 why? I have no idea. This is what people told us. That being said, we never felt at risk or unsafe AT ALL. Just keep in mind that Semporna (the town where you take the boat to Mabul) has some strange vibes, so spend as little time there as possible... we stayed at Summer Holiday Semporna and it was clean and comfortable for one night. We're happy to explain more if you have questions, just message us on IG ;)

Fun facts about the sea gypsy people that they're get dizzy when walk on land. They're also very scare when go on land during night time because they bury the death on land, maybe because of that there might be ghost. And they're scare of cats, yes... Cats!! Because cats and big cats (tiger, lion, cheetah) come from the feline family. They think that all cats are dangerous, wild and eat human...

I am sadden that the section with dive resorts is the worst crap on water. All this can be solved with incinerators. I do not think malaysia is so poor we cannot build incinerators, it is because illegals never pay tax. Therefore no service.
