The Pistols of Fallout | Revolvers

On the road to remastering my old content, we tackle the pistols, but not just any pistols! We look at the in-game lore, the real world inspirations and any interesting obscure information that I can find related to the revolvers of the Fallout series.

    Gunther’s big iron is undoubtedly a reference to Texas red from the song ‘big iron’ in not only the name and color of the gun but the 20 notches on the gun are probably a reference to the line “and the notches on his pistol numbered one and 19 more” also obtaining it from a quest where you go around a fake town robbing people because he’s the outlaw the ranger is after

    what I always thought was funny is that in fallout shelter the .32 pistol only does 1-2 damage and has a variant that literally only does 1 damage, so getting shot by the .32 is apparently the same amount of pain as getting punched

    it's a reference to every immersive sim ever using that as the code for the first lock, which in turn is because it was used on the first lock in System Shock, which is because it was indeed their office door code. That it happens to be incidentally related to a novel that's often thematically relevant to immersive sims is just a very Bob Ross happy accident.

    The Ranger Sequoia reminds me of a story I have from playing modded Fallout 4 with a childhood friend: I tend to prefer energy weapons, but they always love the cowboy style of weapons and the whole aesthetic of the NCR Desert Rangers. I don't remember the exact circumstances, but they having some rough times and I decided to treat them next time they came over to play with me. I installed a mod that added the Hunting Revolver with a Ranger Sequoia unique, went with their character to get the Sequoia, then set up a footlocker at their base with the weapon inside before returning to the position they left off at when they last played. They really appreciated it, when we were able to play together again. Because of this, the Sequoia always makes me think of them.

    Dude the Ranger Sequoia is the king. Man that is my favorite revolver. In my opinion it’s a bummer that we have to use the “Shady Sands shuffle” to get it from a Ranger & Chief Hanlon(or if Hanlon shoots himself. Which leads to a bad ending for the Rangers). It would be cool if Hanlon gave you the rank of Ranger in the NCR(if you didn’t turn him in). Then he gave you a free Ranger Sequoia & non-disguise ranger coat. Plus the fully upgraded revolver from F4 is awesome too. Another crazy cannon. 😎👍🏼

    From a realism standpoint it makes sense why the 44. can’t fan the hammer. Fanning the hammer comes from when single action revolvers were the only option but even then it was only used as trick to entertain people. Fanning wouldn’t work if the revolver was a double action because the cylinder will only rotate as the trigger is pulled. So you’d basically just be trying to shoot the same spent cartridge. But it’s the fallout universe so logic is nonexistent so it still could be a thing all things considered

  • @hanzzel6086

    @hanzzel6086

    6 ай бұрын

    Well, that depends on the double action. Most double actions I know of can be used as single actions because their cylinders rotate when the hammer is cocked, doesn't matter how it is cocked. Of course, there is no shortage of double action-only revolvers either. And you would normally be doing it to increase trigger sensitivity and improve accuracy.

  • @Kriscosmic

    @Kriscosmic

    @@hanzzel6086 all I know is when I tried fanning my double action it wouldn’t work. That maybe because of the revolver I have (a 357 Smith and Wesson that can shoot double and single action) but I’m sure the cylinder wouldn’t rotate unless the trigger was actually squeezed and released, but I only tried it with the an empty cylinder and dummy rounds but I doubt anything different will happen with live rounds.

    4:30 the Model 19 somehow weighing more than a Deagle makes my brain feel hurty. The _lightest_ model of Deagle, which didnt exist when Fallout was made, is still over a pound heavier than the heaviest Model 19 variant. The standard Mark XIX in the game is IRL about two and a half pounds heavier than the 4" Model 19 pictured in game.

    Quick correction for Mr. RadKing: the use of 451 as a code originated in System Shock, and was not a reference to Fahrenheit 451, but due to the fact it was the code to the door of the office of the studio that made it, Looking Glass, though the Gainer itself is most likely a reference to this and Fahrenheit 451

    The "Casull" is actually modeled after the Freedom Arms model 73, the first production .454 Casull revolver on the market. Also .454 Casull is far more powerful than .44 Magnum. .454 Casull has more energy at 100 yards than .44 Magnum does at the muzzle.

    I was struck by that date mentioned for the black powder pistol, so I had to check. But yeah a single shot percussion cap pistol would be a little archaic for 1850. Black powder weapon would make sense for a post apocalypse, though. They're easier to create, and the ammunition can be crafted with nothing more than some molds and a campfire, as opposed to requiring special presses for brass-cased ammo. There was a show about an apocalypse that wiped out all electronic technology and the main authority used muskets, because they could make them and reload them without needing electrically-powered machines. More modern guns did exist, but the ammunition was hard to find, since no new ammo could be made. There was one scene where a rebel with a modern sniper rifle was really cleaning house on some of the authority soldiers, until he ran out of the 10 or 15 rounds he had.

    Electricity is not strictly needed at any stage of the reloading process though. Everything necessary for a modern cartridge can be machined/produced without powered machinery, and even if it couldn't be then percussion cap revolvers and breech-load rifles would be the logical fallback well before muskets lol

    A fun fact Im sure someone else has commented by now: Even when it's a single large projectile, the projectile part of the ammunition of black powder firearms like muskets, blunderbusses, and cannons is still called shot as long as it's just metal(round shot, grapeshot, chainshot, ect), where explosive ammunition like might be used in a hand mortar or cannon is where the term shell originates in reference to ammunition(as far as Im aware)

    Fun fact: The .357, .41 and .44 Magnums were all made by adding one 10th of an inch to the cartridge of their respective Specials (Turns out that the .38 Special’s true calibre is .357) and this is why they can all fire their respective Specials. However the round sitting 1/10th of an inch further back in the cylinder means that the bullet begins travelling inside the cylinder and this would cause excess wear on the “forcing cones” or the start of the barrel. I’m told that more modern guns are made of harder metals so they might bear this excess wear better than the older guns although some disagree. For any movie fanatics who know of “Dirty Harry” movies, the original movie credited with bringing the .44 Magnum to such a level of worldwide fame that the Model 29 was sold out around the world and impossible to buy for months, the titular Harry Callahan says in the second movie, “Magnum Force” that he uses a “light special” round so by his own testimony he didn’t use Magnums but only fired .44 specials through his big revolver.

    Maybe they didn't include the suppressor for the police revolver as, outside of a small handful of exceptions, revolvers can't effectively use one due to the gap in between the cylinder and the barrel

    Fallout has always seemed like a setting that would be revolver centric. In real life, in the post war, semiautos were far from new, the military had been issued the same semiauto for 40+ years, but almost all police and many civilians preferred revolvers, they were still kind of the default handgun, you say 'pistol' and the average person of the time would probably picture a revolver in their minds eye.

    As for an in-world reason why the .357 is .357: For all we know, they're a post-war creation and the loading gate is for economical production. .357 is a rare pistol cartridge that's both good as a black powder cartridge (.38 began as one, and .357 only differs outside of load data for safety) *and* properly utilizes smokeless powder (actually getting a solid speed boost). That it's great as a carbine cartridge too would make it an obvious pick for anyone setting up a gunmaking industry from scratch and would be selling to people who might not have consistent access to smokeless powder.
