The Pirate Party - the politics of protest: Rick Falkvinge at TEDxObserver
Rick Falkvinge
Political evangelist
In 2006, Rick Falkvinge, a Swedish software entrepreneur, founded a new political party centred around the subjects of file sharing, copyright and patents. He called it the Pirate Party and it rose to prominence after a government crackdown on the file-sharing site, the Pirate Bay. Since then, the Pirate Party has swept Europe and beyond to become an international political movement, active in 40 different countries with representation in the European parliament.
In Sweden, it's the largest party for voters under the age of 30 with 25% of the vote, and in September 2011, the German Pirate Party won an unprecedented 8.9 per cent of the vote and now has several members in the Berlin state parliament. Focused on the subjects of government transparency, internet privacy and copyright law, the Pirate Party hosts Wikileaks on its servers and uses new technology to leverage political power in new and interesting ways. In 2011, Foreign Policy magazine called Falkvinge one of the top 100 global thinkers.

There's another good quote. "Your worst adversaries aren't evil, and trying to portray them as such does not help your cause. But it does something else: it defines you."
What do you do if your country's system excludes all but two parties?

You shouldn't touch the system, I heard people say.

You find other people who are like you and who have noticed the scam and unite. Then you ask them to search for any information on pyramid and related schemes.

Keep trying until you get just enough to get a president barely elected and a slight majority in congress. You'll only have to do it once.

Launch a bloody coup and purge those who upheld it.
"An Entrepreneur is tasked with making money given the constraints of society and technology. They do not get to dismantle civil liberties, even if, and perhaps especially if, they can't make money otherwise." Rick Falkvinge @ TEDx Observer
Very enlightening. I understand the Pirate Party so much more.
Thanks Rick.
Good job Rick -- I loved it man.
Excellent Rick!
Congrats on your wins tonight
Beautiful!
Great Talk.
Is there anywhere i can get a transcript of this talk?
Nicely done sir. :3
"people will take your vision and do whatever they can to further it" If you are passionate, people will be attracted to that passion and help even though they dont really know why. I am passionate about something I do in my life and I can tell all and sundry, people are attracted to that passion like moths to a lamp. So, be passionate about your cause. It may not guarantee all the help you need, but in hindsight in my stuff, I have never been alone and my group of followers is growing. PS, I would like to end illiteracy too, that's a wonderful cause we can all do soooooo easily
"There's a Futurama quote..."
I wonder if there is such a party in Israel. Thank you Rick for your brilliance!
Everything changes, sometimes it takes a push.
did anyone else sing the futurama quote ? LOL.
Total bro. Total bro. Very likeable as well.
Give this guy money and powers~!
Let's hope that this party doesn't go the way of the other political parties.
If someone told him that, in 2012, pirate party would be germany's strongest party, would he believe it ....
Totally agree with his politics, but what is he saying near the end? The power went to his head.
In European democracies it is actually feasible to start a political party in order to make a change. Most governments are formed by coalitions and the party's impact on the new polices is roughly in proportion to its size (so long as they belong to the winning coalition). How does that work in the US with a two party system?
\m/..\m/ salute and admiration ....
what ive noticed is usually one campaigns under the party that most fits their ideals. if your popular enough then information gets around and the like to the point you've influenced what people want from their politicians
Vote in pirates around the world 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sure the Dems and Reps are thr right and far right of the "corporate party", but their polisitions shift over time on fluctuations and creation of internal caucuses. Look at the Tea Party in The GOP for a good exsmple
And today the swedish parliament approved the DRD of which Rick spoke with just the greens and excommunist against.
i was there, woop
He should pirate MS Office so he can use Power Point.
Did you check on TED dot com yet?
arrrr.
I hope this parties ideas never get wheels.
👋👋👋👋👋
if you were going to say 'epic' or 'legit' to anything... well, this better be it! :P
RoShawn. Sanderson
your a god i wish things you send would be private selling drugs would be so much eaiser ! voting for the pirate party peace out from SwEdEn
If the wrong kind of southern cop overhears young adults discuss this party......what do you think is going to happen to the average youth? Resisting arrest plus assaulting an officer.
someone asked how the US two party system could add something like an effective party as Parliments easily add them.. Instead of a 3rd p, build a caucus into the Dem or Rep and b effective within.g

Best thing I learnt from Wikipedia is that it gives in to the strongest who want to feed us crap
In israel people pirate freely, even though there's no such party! seriously, it got to a situation where teachers are not afraid to bring pirate copies of movies to class. as for privacy, i trust and hope that the shin bet (~USA's FBI) to wiretap at least those who are suspects. and I trust and hope that the Shin bet agents respect the information they are exposed to. it's the right of privacy vs the right of safety. and in an imperfect place like israel, the latter wins.
if people dont get to get rich for every softwere thay are doing there woldnt be so much pirecy... its like we live in a world that movie ,music , any softwer company are planing to get rich very fast..WORK LIKE EVERY BODY WORK. hard work and caring about customer will keep people buying your shit and comeback for more and then you get rich and be happy.
this guy is hilarious but no one is laughing. hahah. so awkward. but awesome.
Uhhhhhhhhhh No
The keywords here are "corporations run our government." If we don't like something, we must vote with our money. That's the only thing corporations understand or respond to.

What a madman
People need to remember whilst he has good points, it's most of his opinion.
So I guess the pirate party is pretty much dead, right?
I agree with his main thought but he is not a good speaker and this speech doesn't feel well thought out, it just sort of wander and meanders
I miss the old Pirate Party that focused on balancing intellectual property laws rather than protecting our online integrity. My goal is not to illegally download movies without being caught, it is to make it legal in the first place so that I would have nothing to hide.
