Grew up 20 minutes from the Pickton farm. My buddy used to collect golf balls off their property when they were kids and found purses and wallets several times but didn’t think much about it. The brother was cool to them, he showed them where the most golf balls were, and let them go nuts. I also knew people who partied there later on. Wild story!! Love the channel!!

One of the reasons why I left Canada after 7 years forever as an international student. I lived in Columbia street at Columbia hotel for a long long time. Canada has a reputation to be a good place to live.....it might be but Vancouver is completely f.........d up. I have witness small issues down the street with sick people where for 1 single homeless drunk , 2 police cars came and 6 cops around him !!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely ridiculous..........Also the immigration policy of Canada is a bit messed up. They promise you a PR after your PGWP and ultimately they send you home likely behind explanations that you need a lawyer to understand. I am an Italian and was ok for me to come back in my beautiful country, but during my bachelor degree at BCIT ( where lots of employees don't know absolutely how to perform their jobs and are very rude ) I have met lots of people from poor countries and for them Canada was like the American dream in the 70's. Keeping in touch with many of them , I have discovered that most of them where sent back home after the end of their programs. . . Canada goverment is making millions on international students playing down at certain point. Living in the east side , I had the chance to talk with many homeless people..they just need someone to talk with and not get easy drugs everywhere. Canada has completely messed up this situation and is unable to find a solution. I HAVE HEARD MILLION OF TIMES " SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY SORRY " ....they apologize for every single bullshits. Ridiculous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The fact is many of them don't want to talk to you because you are international and is kind of you "steal jobs " for Canadians.... Don't give me wrong , my country has lots of issues too but it doesn't sell shit for gold to immigrants. Who comes here already knows that we are having issues with job market and politicians aren't really ok. But at least we are honest since the outset....God bless you Canadians and stop apologize for everything: apologize continuously isn't synonyms of be educated at all but a poker face to me !!!!

A native woman I knew told me she used to live in the East End when all this was going down. She used to go to the same bar and almost every day she would see "Mr. Picton" drinking while his brother just sat at the bar with him. He would buy her drinks. One time, he asked her if she wanted to go back to his place in Coquitlam to party with him. She said, "no, I only party downtown". That statement probably saved her life because it was less than a year later he was caught.

You are right about that. I’m just across the pond on the island and women were going missing left and right. There were a few officers that worked the east side and were ringing the alarm bells for years before the higher-ups actually started doing something about it. When it comes to investigating serial homicide if the women are street workers or marginalized no one seems to care. It’s like they have this attitude of “well if it’s prostitutes then I’m safe” or “it’s just prostitutes” and they carry on with their day. But the reality is these are still people. They’re mother’s, daughters, sisters, and friends to someone and we should all care. These women were discarded long before Pickton entered the picture. It’s so sad that this attitude is seemingly global. There’s a documentary about the people of the east side called Through A Blue Lens (and a few others that are really good if you’re interested). It was made by two police offers who worked that area. And they were trying to do something about the missing women long before anyone took a serious look at what was happening. They were ringing the alarm but no one was listening. The doc is good and really compassionate.

I live in Vancouver and I have my whole life (30 minutes away from port coquitlam) I was in treatment for addiction and police came in asking addicts in the center about missing women. I didnt have anything to add but some of my fellow recovering addicts went and talked to the cops. The thing is hookers are so transient and hard to follow so are drug addicts. Sometimes whats thought as being missing is a 3 day binge. Well I ended up getting in trouble again for drugs and pickton was in the same prison as me. It was north fraser and me and my cellmate were saying if we could we would take a shot at punching him in the head. Alas he had his own little unit completely cut off and even during the day when they transport pretrial prisoners back and forth to court he was alone. The whole prison with hundreds and hundreds of men awaiting trial and sitting in remand were basically locked down and frozen. Also I know of the only one woman who fought off pickton as he stabbed her she stabbed him back. I wont say her name but guess what she was native of course. Its a real trajety and my condolences go to the victims and family and though I am ashamed for being in jail and struggling with drugs I am proud my fellow prisoners in red would have had street justice enact if possible. It is not though as north fraser is super max security and they search from your ears to your crotch to the bottom of you socks and its tight. I am cigarette free for 3 years and off fentanyl for 7 months this time at recovery. I am not ashamed or proud of prison its what happens and I paid a price but what pickton did was so bad. I know some people who quit eating ham and pork for years after the pickton thing. Where I grew up is the serial murder capital in the world .........its remote and the lack of tundra makes for quick decomposition. So sad................they should make serial killers work on snake island collecting snake antivenom as a public service. Be safe peace out there Jesus saved me. I love you all Darren out

I love that you covered this story. I live not too far away from Port Coquitlam. Funny enough, my family bought pork from the Pickton's obviously before we ever knew of the crimes they had been committing, nevertheless the fact they ground their victims into mush and blended them with their pigs. Just a point though, Robert Pickton was never known as the "Piggy Palace Murderer/Massacre". Robert Pickton is known as the "Pickton Pig Farmer Killer". Yes, lol - us Canadians are very literal!

so its not entirely unbelievable. keep in mind these women were typically druggies or hookers apparently. So his story also made sense that he caught her stealing. obviously not in hindsight but when it happened it would be a he said she said situation which would be very hard to prove one way or the other.

I REALLY hope the police were held responsible for their lack of response and got held criminally, financially, and civilly, responsible for their direct hand in allowing murders to continue. They could've stopped this long before but no, addicts to this day aren't raken seriously and deemed unworthy of police assistance.

Later my mom found out that the same guy that tried taking them for a ride was a man that would lure woman to Pigton Farm for this psychopath for money. My mom and her friend would probably be dead today if that woman didn't stop them... it's so insane to think about.

I lived in Vancouver at the time and remember the indigenous community screaming that there was a serial killer targeting the downtown east side and the Vancouver police simply ignored them for years. It truly seemed that the social class of the victims played a significant role in the response of the Vancouver police.. We can only speculate how many of these women could have been saved if someone at the VPD had listened.

Born in 1997, grew up in Coquitlam. The evolution of this case has always been in and out of the news my entire life. Cool to see Mr Ballen covering something from here. As far as the downtown Eastside... If you see photos of Vancouver you are seeing a very limited part of it, the downtown core, west end, kits, west Granville and a but if Mt pleasant. As soon as you go from essentially the stadium/Chinatown station all the way to almost commercial now, it's a ghetto. It was so risky that Canada post stopped delivering mail in that area (not sure if they resumed) earlier this year. There are no sidewalks just literal kilometers of homeless sprawl. It's obviously at its worst on east hastings near Gastown, but it's a growing issue that is only getting worse.

F the story, starting at 11:30 and forward caught me off guard. Why nobody is talking about how makeup, candy, and everyday products have dead animal meat? And potential human meat because nothing is to be trusted. I don't see any top or newest comments mentioning that. Adding this to one of the reasons why I want to live completely independent and make my own stuff for everyday products.

We played golf at a course directly adjacent the pig farm (Carnoustie golf club) all thru the 90s and 2000s. When this came out we couldn’t believe what had been going on there, what those pigs were eating on Sunday mornings while we laughingly and happily teed off at 7am thinking everything in the world was right and life was good.

Fact he's still alive and being "looked after by the system" is sad. I'm in the UK but feel totally some crimes need the death penalty. Our justice system is poor and diluted with too much effort looking into why the aggressor would be affected in some way to commit this, ( and how we can change and support him or her ) plus this fear of upsetting the pc crowd. Kind of begs the question if one of these victims belonged to a family of those either side of the arguement would they still have their conviction on leniency. I doubt it.

"I would want vengeance if this was me" is a pretty poor basis to build a society around. Particularly given that like 1/10 people executed by the state in the west - so, in America - are innocent. Let's turn the question around: are you cool with murdering an innocent man so that nine guilty ones who are no longer capable of harming anyone Die? Or better: would you be alright with dying paralyzed and in agony tomorrow so that nine killers of your choice experienced the same? For the record: no, this isn't a Foxhole Atheists thing. Quite a few family members of the victims of murderers across the world have testified *against* having their father, or mother, or brother's killer executed. Some of them are famous. Most of them are not. If your beliefs change in the face of strong emotions, you either didn't really believe in them or they were faulty. It's why you see people like you - you know, people who talk about how everyone else is so afraid of upsetting the 'PC crowd' - seem to drop those beliefs selectively based on their life experience, like John McCain on torture or Dick Cheney on gay rights, but it's damn rare to see the opposite.

4:48 It’s important to note that most of the women who were murdered/missing were of Indigenous background. The VPD were rightly accused of racism when they did not investigate the missing women.

It's my recollection that some of the victims may have come from the Highway of Tears. Similarly, though on a smaller scale, several murders of FN women in Nova Scotia remain unsolved. This is true of quite a few other murders, though, so hard to say it's racist; more likely classist, considering how things work here. The rape and murders of women are generally under-investigated here, and the RCMP is currently being sued by a victim that was ignored, evidence not collected, no follow ups, etc., when all was quite obvious. It's getting hot for the RCMP here since the massacre. Our very own Keystone Kops, with a fair dose of corruption thrown into the mix.
