Szpilman wrote his book in 1946, it was published but after a few months, it was withdrawn from circulation by the Soviet authorities (Staline was still alive) because it was not permitted to say anything positive about Germans; a German translation was only published in 1998, and an English one in 1999. Captain Hosenfeld was a good man, a school teacher before the war; he had also helped several other people, Jewish and Gentile Poles, by giving them fake papers, by hiding and feeding them, etc.; he died in a Soviet POW camp in 1952. Szpilman and others tried to get him out, but the Soviets accused him of being a spy as an excuse for not letting him go. In the movie, when he arrives in his office, you can hear him say "good morning" to his soldiers, instead of "Heil H.", which would have been expected as a greeting back then (even German civilians could have gotten into much trouble for not using this greeting in public), and they also say "good morning" back to him. I don't know if this was only written in the script by mistake (given the amount of research in all the details, I doubt it, though). Not all German soldiers were Nazis, especially the older ones (he would have been 49 when they met). But the very young ones would have known nothing else, they would have been brainwashed since elementary school, and then, after 1936, the Hitler Youth was mandatory for boys from age 10 onwards, and after 1939, for girls as well. There is a very good movie about the Hitler Youth, "Jojo Rabbit", that depicts this very accurately (it's not based on a true story, though). Watch it if you haven't, yet, it's really good (it won an Oscar in 2019). If you want to watch something different (not about WWII or the Holocaust), how about "Wings of Desire"? It's a movie from 1987, made in Berlin when the Wall was still there, and nobody would have thought that it would fall only 2 years later. It's one of the most beautiful films ever, really. Very unusual, though.

You haven't seen JoJo Rabbit? Please put it at the top of your list. You are a favorite reactor of mine. I think this is a better, more personal film than Schindler's List, but of course there is no need to compare. Thank you.@@wadumin

Szpilman actually tried for years to find Wilhelm Hosenfeld but the USSR had no interest in the publicity of a "good" Nazi.

The Pianist was even harder and more emotionally devastating to watch for me than Schindler's List. It's hard to explain. Both movies are masterpieces but are different in their approaches and the way they are shot. Both are classics, imho.

From what I read back when the movie had just debuted, Adrian Brody had two unpleasant experiences: 1) Losing a lot of weight for the film, (30 pounds). He did this by starving himself on about 750 calories a day for several months. 2) Practicing the piano for 4 hours a day to play "some" of the parts himself. From what I read back then, Mr. Brody actually plays the piano, but not professionally. The difficult passages were played by the Polish pianist, Janusz Olejniczak.

Another incredibly difficult holocaust film. Adrian’s performance was so good (he won the Oscar for this movie) and the cinematography and directing were top notch. As always, great to see you again Amin. Peace ✌️ my brother

This movie is so amazing but broke me at the same time! Adrian Brody should have gotten 100 Oskars for this one! EPIC! My GF at the time and I watched it on a sunday and we haven't spoken afterwards for about 30 minutes... it is the most impactful WW2 movie of all times and as a german, we should never forget what happened back then, ever!

Couple of historic clarifications. The Pianist took place in Warsaw while Schindler's List took place in Krakow. So, they would not have known about Schindler here. The Warsaw Ghetto uprising lasted 28 days (April 19 to May 16 1943). The Warsaw rising lasted 63 days (aug 1 to Oct 2 1944) the Soviet army was right across the Vistula and waited for the rising to end before starting their attack on Warsaw (the poles were pro the government in exile based in London and Stalin wanted another communist state). The polish army held out against the Germans from Sept 1 to Sept 17 1939. So the starving jews in the ghetto lasted longer than the polish army. For Jews helping Jews i recommend the movie Defiance, as well as, Resistance.

There wouldn't be a reference to Schindler. That was in Cracow. This is Warsaw. The only connection to the two stories is that the director of this movie was in the Cracow ghetto, where some of the events in Schindler's list takes place. He drew on those experiences to make this movie realistic. Also, they are not going to a labor camp. The Warsaw Ghetto inhabitants were sent to Treblinka. It was a death factory. People were just killed on arrival by the trainload. That's what would have become of everyone on that train. His family is gone.

I don't know how much you know about Director Roman Polanski. Reactors shy away from mentioning his name because he was arrested for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, a sordid story. He fled the U.S. in 1978. Earlier in his career he directed Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown (1974), both of which are popular with reactors. Chinatown is considered a classic, modern film noir. It is a mystery crime film, inspired by the real-life California Water Wars, a series of disputes over southern California water at the beginning of the 20th century. Polanski was also an actor and appears in a small role in Chinatown. You can recognize him because he is very short. It is a beautiful film. Polanski escaped the Kraków Ghetto in 1943 as a 10-year-old. His wife Sharon Tate and four friends were killed in 1969 in LA by the infamous Manson Family cult. Director Quenton Tarantino uses that time period and Polanski and Tate characters in his film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The neon-lit LA of the 60s is absolutely breathtaking. I recommend the film whole heartedly, but you should do some research on the Manson Family and the Sharon Tate killings first. I hope you do more American classic film reactions. I like your style. Thank you.
