Its funny, i used to romanticize the phantom. I know he truly is a mad man who thought one woman was his world and would do anything to have her. His life was a never ending darkness that she lit with some light. He seduced her, drew her in. And she fell, not saying much about her. She flees the one she truly loves and keeps retreating to the mad man. But she sees all he needs is that reassurance that someone could love him. Its complex. She did love him, but not the way she loved Raoul, he was a fantasy, an "angel" who turned to a dark obsession. Point---When we have known no love we become obsessed when we get the little taste of it. Phantom is at it's core a tragety not a love story. It shows how far someone is willing to go to be loved. I pity Phantom (Erik) now. Half my life i truly thought he was the right guy to choose but...point made....

+OPAL WRATH I think something is escaping you. Even when we are talking about "mad people" there are many types of mad people.... We must not forget that he was a genius, he was not totally mad or totally desperated. He was suffering that's right, but that could probably be resolved with love. That's actually the only thing he needed actually. Because he was a completed men in almost everything. Christine wasn't the right woman for him maybe, but a different woman could make him happier. For example, the girl who saved him from the gypsies.

This story and adaptation always reminds me of Beauty and the Beast. Brilliant.

Everyone is saying Christine should've chosen Erik, yet if you read the book, you'd find out that Raoul is a childhood "lover" if you will, and Christine has loved him for so long. Yes, she thought maybe there could've been a spark with Phantom, but she really just couldn't love Erik like she loves Raoul.

tacokotaco she was 18. It would be illegal for her to kiss the phantom if she was 16 because she would be underaged... Gerard was 34/35 years old and Emmy was 18.... so in order to play the part, she had to be 18+ for it to be legal for her to kiss him.

If we´ll think hard, it were the Phantom´s acts - his killing and possessivity that scared Christine away, much more than his face. Then Raoul appeared as a safe rock, when she felt lost. And yet, I can´t help but feeling so sorry for the Phantom, as he watches all that... I want to cry with him. It´s a torn feeling.

All this "Raoul sucks, go with Erik/Phantom" or "Phantom is insane, she chose wisely" is starting to get old. As a starting writer, and watching this movie closely, I understand the reason and history of the famous musical love triangle. Christine is a young girl who loves to sing and cherishes those she loves. Raoul is her "childhood sweetheart", who loves her in return and cares for her well being, but that doesn't mean he's perfect, because he can sometimes make stupid decisions. As for Phantom/Erik, maybe if I known or saw more on the history of him teaching Christine and how he fell in love with her, then I'd want him with her. And I still think they'd make a good pair. However, he is not sane in the head. He's like a broken puppy who only wants love but can't express it correctly, instead becoming like a misunderstood evil genius. In conclusion, Christine chose Raoul, the man she loves with all her heart. But that doesn't mean she doesn't love Erik. Sure, maybe she thought there was something that could've happened, but she just couldn't love him the way she loves Raoul. That's why I think she made a good call as a character.

have you seen songcatcher. she's like 13 in that. incredible voice there as well. she's very versatile. if you like the music of Appalachia, and bluegrass, it's a must see. little corny and sappy but music is incredible

@@Andyp1000 I think, when making a movie, a certain level of flexibility is required. I know a couple that got married in 1974 at ages 18 and 16 and they are still married.

Patrick Wilson and Emmy Rossum would be awesome as the lead male and female voice roles in a Disney musical!

Being in the middle of an actual love triangle (or polygon, lol) actually sucks. Because you can make one person's world and the other's crumble.

My empathy !! You will find there will be a few of those "tough" trade-offs in life. One example is that almost of us will go thru several jobs before retiring. Each time you will have to choose whether or not to stay with the known, or take a chance on the new. Except for one job, I was glad I took a chance on the new because I grew from each change. Unfortunately, choosing a job is a lot easier when comparing to choosing a mate. Good luck, and may true love guide you.

True that the phantom was a master of deception but he kept Christine going. He trained her and brought out the best in her and made her a star. Raoul didn't even remember her til the phantom made her voice and presence perfection. Choosing Raoul wasn't wrong but leaving the phantom completely was
