The Perfect Summer Drink? | Martini & Tonic | Jamie Oliver

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Jamie is in Barcelona and he’s going to show you a wonderful, simple, delicious cocktail - the Martini & Tonic. It couldn’t be easier to combine the two ingredients over ice for a long, refreshing drink that’s perfect for summer evenings. Mix the drink ‘Mezzo/Mezzo’ or half & half and you’re onto a winner, and try it with both Rosso and Bianco! (This is a paid ad by Martini)

I tried this - loved it! Served it to guests the next night - they thought it was great too. My wife says this may be her favourite cocktail ever. One question: I used Martini "secco", which is what I had on hand. Is that the same as Bianco?

Thanks for the info! I'll check our local liquor store for Bianco - but I can testify that this drink is also excellent with Martini Secco! Still need to try the Rosso version . . . .

Yeah... the difference between dry and sweet white vermouth is fairly significant. For example, if you were to make a martini (the cocktail, not the brand of vermouth) with sweet white vermouth, your guests would be surprised. However, I suspect that all of the sugar in the tonic water that's used to balance the bitterness of the quinine might make the effect less noticeable. I think that this might also work quite nicely with bitter lemon, if it still exists. When I was younger, it was a soda made with quinine, lemon, and sugar. My grandfather used to drink it all by itself, which wasn't really its purpose - it was intended to be a mixer - but he wasn't rally one to care about such things.

I don't see a problem with it. My cooking and drink-making skills have improved tremendously since watching Food Tube and Drinks Tube. We are getting these videos for free, yet Jamie still has to pay his enormous team that make these high quality videos for us to enjoy. If one doesn't like the item that is being advertised, simply swap it for another item and continue on with the recipe.

My point is: nowadays, Jamie only shows up to do adverts and dumb tips. Real recipes come from the other hosts. He's the face and the name of the channels, and yet, when was the last time you saw Jamie Oliver doing a creative recipe video for foodtube? Not counting the summarised versions of his TV shows, those are adverts for his DVDs and books. He's following Ramsay's footsteps, moving away from the (real) kitchen and into showbusiness and management. Again: he used to be a cook, now he's a glorified salesman.

It seems like you don't watch a lot of FoodTube, given that Jamie has been alternating recipe videos with his collaborators. He did a video on potato salad three ways literally five days ago, and just within the last month or so, he's done pan-fried salmon and pesto, a twist on the Waldorf salad, and a curried fish pie. So not only has he not advertised anything in any of these videos, he's been showing up every week to cook along with his collaborators.

Kastera1000 Ok, let's do it: 1 - potato salad is not a creative recipe. It's something you teach your 6-year-old, so (s)he can help with the roast. That's probably how he got the "idea", by teaching Buddy or something. 2 - Pan-fried salmon and pesto are two recipes he's done to exhaustion in previous videos. And his technique for pan-frying the salmon was wrong: he started flesh side down. Stickiness overload. 3 - waldorf salad is from the waldorf hotel. A "twist" is not a recipe. 4 - the fish pie, if I rightly recollect, was done for TV. So, as I said, that one was a summarised version to help boost sales of his DVDs and books. Plus, it's not the most innovative thing in the world. Anything I got wrong?

Nope, you got it right, but there it's not really the main point of FoodTube. It's about getting people excited about food and cooking and learning new tips and techniques along the way. You have to remember that not everyone is as skilled a chef as you might be; they might be inspired to try out pan-fried salmon and pesto for themselves, or put a twist on a recipe they already know how to make (like currying a fish pie or roasting grapes and walnuts to make a Waldorf salad instead of just using the raw). There's also the fact that not everyone has visited this channel for as long as you might have, nor has everyone watched every single video the channel puts out. Has he made salmon and pesto before? Sure. Does that mean everyone has *seen* it before? Not a chance. You also have to keep in mind that not everyone can regularly watch Jamie's TV show, so FoodTube is a good substitute. Sure, he recycles some of his old material, but more people get to see it. Got forbid the guy try to reach a large audience...
