I have NEVER been un-able to tell my front truck from my back. Back truck always has deep coping/5.0 groove and front has crookie monster groove. I have never marked my trucks ever except with sweet, sweet grinds.

@@DanCorrigan can you ride high end bearings without play? I like the stealthy sound and pop with snug bolts using spacers, but want fast too. I don't on't know if that's possible I think Swiss always needs some play, or were just loud. I haven't ridden in 16 years so I missed a lot of new stuff that's been out over the years. Are the fast bearings necessarily louder like the ole Swiss, sisssss have been?

Something to bare in mind is that it's not the wheel base of the board as such as trucks are slightly different. Indys angle in and thunders angle out so this changes your wheelbase. True wheel base should be taken from hanger bolt to hanger bolt. I learnt this from professor shmit on the 9 club. Very interesting 1 🙂x

Thunders give you a larger wheelbase and independent makes your wheelbase shorter. By like a quarter of an inch I think.

I dont really ride Indy’s but I have thunders on a short wheel base deck giving me the same wheel base I would on a more standard size with Indy’s 🤷🏼‍♂️ Seems to ride very nice

Yeah I been following Ben for a long time. I always wondered how he could progress when always switching his setup.

I can absolutely testify about Indys turning really good. I had my last pair stolen outside of work attached to my vision deck. Since then I've bought Winkowski's hollows for my 9 inch Santa Cruz slasher and it's really no effort at all. Also got the solid black ones I'm wanting to try.

It’s fascinating to me as an older skater, how we all gradually went from huge, puffy shoes and skinny boards to thin shoes and wider boards. Came back after an extended hiatus and I’m trying to adjust still. I do agree with the wider boards but still prefer my old school puffy Globes. I’ve got some AVEs that I really like but my feet/ankles feel so vulnerable.

I too still prefer my big clunky shoes. I was so excited about Fallen, but I just can't do that tennis shoe style. I only wear Metal Mulisha x Etnies now. They've gotten super light in their recent iteration so it's like best of both worlds.

Best thing about skating now is all my revert tricks that were outlawed in the early Aughts are cool again. Same thing with a lot of my transition lip tricks. Other day did a BS 50/50 to BS lipslide and the yutes on the mini ramp lost their shit. Good times man, good times.

Try out the Nike Force 58s. Great protection, solid board feel, and they last quite a long time (plus they are only around $75). I tried a lot of other shoes before I found ones with the balance of puffy/protection, but not straight bricks.

I love most everything about your skating and perspective on skating except the deck rails thing. Love the channel keep it up.

My first board set-up; Deck mini logo, Trucks tensor, Wheels 99STF Hardware and rails enjoy... splurged and ordered the bearings you recomended, I based my build on clearance discount % I recomend this set-up it is perfect for ollies on carpet.

getting back into cruising and pool at 49. picked up a couple 8.5 PP and SC boards and an Andy Anderson 9.13. picked up the 8.75 mini logo and 149 Indy. now im thinking i should have grabbed the 159s... enjoy your down to earth vids.

Im riding some Powell bombers wheels right now size 60mm, 87 duro. So good. I was shocked. The ground around my house is super rough. I also ride some 52mm OJs that are 87 duro, those wheels are my main setup.

Reds work until the ball spacers get worn and jagged because its made of cheaper material. Super reds and up are made with better material which is why they last longer. You can prevent the wear by cleaning out your bearings and keeping your shields on. Truth be told, the only reason they get seized up is because of the excess dirt ends up between the ball spacer and the ball. It begins to solidify and creates more friction between the two causing accelerated wear to the original shape. Going shieldless prevents the excess since the dirt is free to roll out but the lube wont last as long. Bottom line, CLEAN YOUR BEARINGS AND MAKE SURE YOUR BALL SPACERS DON'T GET SEVERELY WORN. Your bearings will last forever so as long as you maintain them. Brand doesn't matter, just clean and lube them properly and you'll go zoom zoom. One last note, BIGGER BALLS EQUAL FASTER JUST LIKE BIGGER WHEEL EQUALS LESS PUSH. *COUGH* swiss big ball six *COUGH* Thanks for reading this nerd shit.

A very un biased review of common and popular parts, I learnt alot here. I think that's my most favourite vid you've done ✔️

Shaped boards surve a purpose depending on your style, square tails really help with no complies and a wider section just before the front bolts (if you got big foot) really helps with underflips and Casper flips and a shorter nose is great for tight transition like jersey barriers and lazy hard flips

I’ve been riding the independent GP-S(silvers) which are I think around $12. Honestly, the best and longest lasting bearings I’ve ever had.

i learned kickflips on a 9.25” with indy 144’s and 61mm Rat Bones, and 1/4” risers. that thing could do almost a full 180 with no effort, but was so high off the ground it needed a tailbone. the flips were still slow, so the smaller trucks didn’t affect it too much, but the big thing was turning with it. still ripped tf out of bowls tho wit such a tight turning radius

The grippier Jessup is pretty good, i still go with Mob though. Even for all the customs I make. Absolutely Destroys my art supplies but you can paint on the grooves n not affect the grip

Indys give you a shorter wheelbase than Thunders and the Ventures are the widest of the 3. Ventures turn well, your turn will be effected by the tightness and your bushing too. Ventures would great on 14" WB decks and I feel like they pinch really well too.

definitely recommend riser pads if they suits you, it saves the mounting holes of your trucks from getting loosen over time.

Yay deck rails - I still trash my graphics but the flat fast bottom. Yummy!

Risers pad will also change the pop timing. I have standard 148 Thunders and found them too low which messed up my pop(I rode Royals prior). I just started using risers and the first session was much better than my last session without them.

Rocket Ron's ceramics were hands down the best bearings I've ever ridden for park and ramp. He's gone now, but you never know how much faster those ceramic bearings are until you drop in and realize you barely have to pump and you're already on that next wall. I'm back to the Reds now, but Ron's were the best, hands down. You could even send your bearings to him and he'd clean them and ship them back to you.

I'm 6'3 and when I discovered the wheel base thing thanks to professor Schmidt it really changed my game. If you got long legs get the widest wheel base imo

Pepper grip tape. I used to only skate with Mob until I found Pepper (of course if there is no Pepper, it's still back to Mob). But it's the perfect mix between Mob and Jessup... super grippy but doesn't rip your thumb apart the first few days skating and your shoes will last longer, and stays the same grippiness throughout the entire boards life. 🙌

I would recommend to actually try Aces. For some reason they are more stable (than indy) in the center and more turney overall, they are the same hight as mids and they have less wheelbite. I always rock indies but I’ve been getting Bronson g3s lately just for the hell of it. But I’ve got the forbidden Welcome Nora deck 8.6 (again, for the hell of it) and some juice bars and 1/8th inch risers. I’d like the Anderson in maple like the bigger one so maybe next time. Who knows. Muah ha ha

I don't skate, but I watch all your videos, making notes and fantasise about the journey of learning. I'm probably too old now, but in theory I could setup a pretty awesome board and inflict all sorts of damage to my wrists and be extremely happy with life!

The bearing spacers allow you to tighten your wheels all the way, without them your wheel will stop spinning if tightened. In the 90’s I remember always haven’t axel jam which caused one wheel to stop spinning. Spacers prevent your wheel from stopping when tight.

Spacer between the bearings to take up the gap between the inner races inside the wheel, "speed rings" on the outers (inner axle before the wheel goes on, outer before the locknut). Idea being the axle/nut won't crush or pinch the bearings as you described. Definitely works to keep wheels tight and without wobble while still spinning free. On my longboard I use Spaceballs bearings where the spacers and speed rings are part of the inner races (the inner race is just extend on each side). No "regular" boards right now sadly. If I get a popsicle or cruiser board any time soon I'll probably go for built-in bearings again. Less parts, just crank them down tight and go riding.

All true, but good luck finding the right ones for your wheels (wheels are also different) - most are too short to actually connect both bearings

Always been a venture guy when it comes to my trucks. No matter what it’s all personal preference

i'm lucky enough to have a few different boards which are really varied, love skating them all but i'm always keen to keep a bog standard deck (8.25, 54mm etc..) that has the a nice feel to it and i get a bit worried if i've not got a couple of similar ones hanging around to replace it. 1st world problems.

I had asked you a question a couple days ago about what kind of wheels do you use, thanks for taking the time to make this video. I asked because I like the way you skate and I know whatever wheels you use must be pretty good coming from someone with good knowledge about it.

I've always thought the purpose of riser pads were to prevent pressure cracks around the hardware holes. Everytime I got a new board there were cracks. Since using riser pads I don't see them.

I was going to mention the same thing. I used to have these rubber riser pads that absorbed a ton of shock and was told the same thing. They're supposed to disperse the vibration from landing away from your trucks and hardware so it doesn't crack your board.

i would rather have pressure cracks and a board that feels right than use risers. i began skating using risers, once i stopped i never looked back. have snapped a lot of boards risers or no i don't think it really prolongs your deck or anything

Almost Mullen Monster deck 8x31.7, Grind King Disruptor trucks 8.0 axles, 1/8 inch riser pads, Powell Dragon Formula 54mm wheels, 93A durometer... Wheels slide a little better than a usual 93A rated wheel.

Allen key all the way! Won’t ever go back to Phillips. I never had a nut go loose on me. I make sure my trucks are tightened evenly and that the screw head is flush with my grip tape .

Riding a 10.3 winkoswki dope planet santa cruz ..its insane 30 inch length with 15 inch wheel base 6 half tail with 4 inch nose Most fun on a deck for years and the Krux mid with 1/4 inch risers trucks Ricta clouds 56mm soft (come skate the uk you'll understand) Reds Flips insanely good despite the size due to the wide fins And the double kick on the tail is just simply a joy to skate

Love me some white wheels. I always turn the graphics inwards too so you only see white. 53mm for me but like to ride them down to 50s before i replace them. I had no idea about wheel base, but I do get a lot of ghost pops when trying nollies which freak me out. Maybe I need to look into this. This was a WAY more helpful video than I expected, Having seen a tonne of these on YT over the years, they tend to be quite generic. Dan went the extra yard here for sure. I'm just learning grinds and nose slides, so was pretty awesome to hear your thoughts on board type that is best for that. Epic content! 👌👋

Playing around with your wheelbase can help your skating immensely. Be warned though if you fall down the rabbit hole of pairing different brand trucks with different wheelbases it’s never ending…

I find my 8 anti hero with Indy 139 and 50 mm wheels is great for flat ground. Park setup 8.5 Indy 149 and 52mm slims

I've always noticed that since day one Powell Peralta concave starts higher up than all other companies, which forces your foot to stay in that crease. The concave starts immediately at the nose/tail when other companies are an inch or 2 flatter before the concave begins. Not. good or bad, just an observation

I have a Jason Adams black label board. Definitely don't want to sack that one!!

Bronson G3 is a great bearing!

Tensor Mag light Hollow Lo's....lightest truck in the world by almost 100g. Absolute beauts.

Bronson G3's are also really affordable and really fast, I have Reds in my cruiser and they're also really smooth

Andele swiss are really good. I'm just like you about reds, and super reds. However, I got ahold of some prod swiss andeles for cheap during a SW sale, they are just like bones Swiss, I can't tell the difference they roll smooth and far just like bones swiss...they last forever as long as you clean them, I've had those for probably almost 2 years now, I don't skate crusty spots like that, but I do like to go on long rides and just cruise and they've held up good. I actually have a brand new set andele swiss still in the package that I don't need to put on yet, they aren't the prod ones though. They are easy to clean, I wouldn't get them for full price but if you can catch a sale or free from someone definitely recommend trying them. I settled on 8.125 last year... perfect for me and how I like to skate. I know people probably think this is lame but I'll tell it,...I got a limited edition Nyjah element a couple years ago out of curiosity... because it was advertised as his personal shape they didn't make for everybody just him...Paul Schmidt helped him create it or whatever, and I loved it...super flat, super mellow, wheelbase not that long but not super short good medium, just a well balanced board tbh... I killed that board...I usually don't kill boards like that, usually give them away or just leave it at a skatepark for someone to find when I feel like it's done...I'm not a big breaker for some reason never have been, I guess I don't stomp...but I absolutely couldn't stop riding that board and ended up actually cracking it and the crack made an uncomfortable lump toeside near the back front bolts, so I finished it off. I couldn't find anymore online, even went as far to search eBay and someone was selling one but he wanted way too much for it...like $200 or something dumb, so I went back to REAL 8.25, messed around on some twin tails etc. Fast forward maybe a year later, he leaves Element, starts disorder...all of the 8.125's they push out are that same exact shape he rode when he was on element... so now I can always get that shape, so I'm happy. Yeah his company isn't all that cool to a lot of people, blah blah...idc man. I'm 33 I can give af about things like that. Just happy to skate and to finally settle, so I hope they don't stop the pressing of that particular shape. 147 thunders, allen hardware 7/8's as well...love bones stf, but also like formula 4's in classic shape... usually doing 32's, can't stand conical or lock ins. Mob for sure...same, I don't even bother with anything else anymore, usually some stupid graphic they have, currently got TMNT mob grip lol...but mostly just basic mob. Oh and not really a fan of having multiple boards in different sizes, a quiver I guess people call it. I used to do that and it just throwed me off...I do have extra boards but they are the same disorder 8.125.

I have the andele swiss , they are amazing

Thunders start turning sooner than Indys but have a shallower turn when you lean into them. Thunders basically have no slack in the middle, they're really good if you skate them tighter because you can still turn. Indys are carvier and taller, better on transition. The "Mindys" are.. bleah, can't stand them personally, heavy, weird pop feel. If you want a lower Indy get the forged baseplate ones.

I had ceramics the last year....I popped the shields on them..they lasted about a year they wear out just like anything else but they were soooo fast

I really want to try Aces in the future.

Shit my favorite board is a Habitat with 8.25/32.125/14.25 dimensions. Mod pod green is the name of the deck. I just bought this board like a week ago and its been the best board I have ever popped! This will probably be my deck for the rest of my life.

I love my old school aluminum Orion 9 on my 9 board trucks but I'm a beginner and find they are stronger and lighter than my independent setup on my 8.50

Mob is my favorite too but I used to really like Iron horse.

Wheels used to be like the biggest thing for me , having risers and big old like 80mm to sk8 7.5 miles to town every day after school to get there an then put on basically bearings for wheels back in the day . But I love soft wheels now cause I’m old, and straight up lock graphite tiny aerosolized can is the shit for cleaning bearings , you can spin and spray them and as they’re spinning they will literally change ta quiet supersonic speeds as you spray them

Hey Dan, if you want to try the grippiest of all grip tape, get black Magick.

I'm a big fan of PVBLIC DOMAIN grip tape, but mainly for the sick graphics! But as far as grippieness goes, I'd put it with Jessup. But definitely one of the grippiest griptapes with graphics for sure!

black diamond is massively underrated. i think it's as grippy as mob, mob has a tiny bit more rugged grip while the bd is sharper. i don't like the perforations in mob i think it makes it less sticky and get torn up easier

For me, riser pads are for wheels bigger than 54mm (my transition board has 56mm so I have them on that). Yeah you're right about wheel size. Where I live, the roads are rough and the parks aren't much better so I sized up. Use the wheel that suits your local surfaces and your skatestyle, not what is fashionable.

Use some shock pads. Makes a huge reduction of vibration.

I switched from Indy to Ace this past year, and I actually feel like the AF1s have incredible stability for landing. I can get a way sharper carve out of them without the truck being sloppy like my Indys have to be for the same turn.

Ace AF1’s with their Hard Bushings (kingpin nut flush) are amazing. They feel more solid with a beter turn than Indy’s to me.

@@frankrotthier4392 my top 3 truck setups right now are AF1 with medium Bones Hardcore, AF1 with hard Ace bushings, or Indy 215 with bones hardcore (hard bottom/med top), depending on the size and purpose of the board. The Ace bushings definitely give a more stable yet sharper carve vs Indy w/default. Gotta get shorter bushings and sloppy trucks to make an Indy keep up on that carve.

3M Makes a Boat Deck tape in a very very wide that comes in this so grippy it is like using the brown/black 80 grit durable style belt sander for grip tape. The stuff is great, but I do not see to many use the tape since the stuff is almost too grippy from the start. Some in wet areas love it as the stuff is still very grippy when wet.

I got the Andale P.Rod swiss bearings on sale, they were cheaper than the reds. You do notice the difference in speed and keeping speed. Im waiting for those bones/pow wheels to release, any idea when?

If you do the deck rail company you gotta do the 3 sided tape I just used it and it's a game changer so easy to put on

My personal favorite bearings are the big balls. Though I do want to fuck with the Bronson dry bearings and see why foy has such a stiffie for them. Also krux trucks feel nice in the park but feel loosy goosy when I'm bombing the hill from home to the park.
