The perfect semi-premium TKL - Luminkey80 Keyboard Review

Ғылым және технология

I feel like I’ve been saying that the budget custom keyboard market has been heating up/getting more competitive/gaining more options for forever now, but it’s still true. The new entrant, the Luminkey80 by Createkeebs’ sister brand Luminkey, is an extremely great value F13 TKL custom keyboard with an excellent pre-built option. However, is it enough to dethrone the Qwertykeys QK80, and does it signal the start of a new great and reliable budget custom keyboard incumbent?

The value proposition of this board is definitely the sound - your rebuild was a great example. To put it simply, this budget TKL can clack.

Interesting what you said about hating seeing PE foam. PE foam really does add a nice poppy sound to the board. Don't get me wrong, I love a really good sounding board with no foams. But I really enjoy switching back from a no foam to a all foam build from time to time.

I think you kinda missing the point...ppl who "hate" PE sounds is not essentially hate it for the existence, No...but PE foam in boards should there only for the user can choose what they can do with their boards, and keyboard (in some specific price range) should not rely on PE foam just to sound decent, personally I like going back to foamy sound once in a while too , but I'm only positive on this for the boards that can be excellent in no-foam configuration on the first place, that's why ppl can choose what they can do. In the context of qk80, for me it's just bad with no foam (yeah yeah it's cheap I understand), but sounds okay with full foams, so it's a hard pass for it in front of something like this luminkey80

@@bosenngantor9160"Real premium board doesnt depend on foam" Yet most of premium keyboard PCBs arent hotswappable, where you have the choice to solder hotswaps options or go Plateless mount. But can't be said the same on whether to put foam or not, as if its a double standard on their premium board etiquette when it comes to the "freedom" of modiying that said board.

I'll preface this by saying sound is subjective - of course. The QK80, because of all its various possible configurations, is able to "reach" most ends of the sound spectrum - whether you want a deep, "thocky" (full) sounding build, or a higher pitch ("clacky") sounding build. You just need to re-configure how you're building it. I think if Luminkey/Createkeebs took the next step, and offered a (significantly) wider variety of plate/mounting options, it would likely be superior to the QK80. But as of now, that isn't the case. Not to take anything away from the Luminkey80 - it does have its strong points. I think it's aesthetically more pleasing than the QK80, I definitely like the chamfering they did to the top case, and the switches that ended up from a collaboration with Gateron. They're close, it seems as if they're taking baby steps - one by one... until they are confident enough releasing a model with as many variations (finishing, colors, materials, weight options, etc.) as QK does - and still manage to keep the price point, somewhat, close to that of QK. It's a step in the right direction. I'm confident they'll get there. But as for me, the QK80 is still one of the most underrated TKL's out right now.

i'm torn between E-retro white and Ano-silver.. reason is my only experience with E-coating is that it's so fragile if i scratch a ano board you only see the scratch but with e-coating it's a ship.. Any thoughts ??

ok im just curious why is it that the people who aren't into keyboards, custom keyboards I mean, always show the same keyboard in every video. They'll have Grovemade, Orbitkey, Deltahub, Flexispot, Ergonofis and most of the time, prebuilts like Keychron, Iquinix, Nuphy, and Logitech, but then when it comes to custom keyboards, they always only show 1 particular keyboard brand, Mode keyboards. and sometimes Luminikey. Why is that? Is Mode somewhere being promoted on kickstarter or something. Literally every desk setup video i've seen, these people will have prebuilt keyboards and then the exception of Mode. Why is it that I only see Mode everywhere. It''s literally posted by everyone who isn't into keyboards for some reason. What I mean is you don't see Jelly Epoch, or FoxLab, or qk65, or zoom65, or time80, or space65, etc being seen. What makes the Mode so special? It's so bizarre. These desk setup youtubers always show the same exact products from one another and they always own the same product
