The Perfect Segway Ninebot Max Scooter Modifications

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After quite a few changes to my Ninebot Max Scooter I am now completely satisfied with its performance. Here I show everything that I have done to it. I have ridden 1800 miles in total so far on the Max. Something I forgot to mention in the video is that the software needs re-flashing along with the additional 12v battery that is all part of the My Max Mods kit. This was a simple task and there are plenty of videos online about how to do that. The re-flash is essential to get the best out of the modification, also the reflash alone even without the extra battery improves the performance greatly.
Here are a couple more notes. The rear tire wears out after about 1000 miles, the front lasts twice as long. I would recommend only original CST (Chen Shin Tire) replacements as they have an anti puncture sticky goop bonded to the inside of the tire tread area. You should never get a puncture with these tires.
With the Monorim front suspension if you tighten all the 6mm screws in the normal fashion, you will damage all the bearings, For each pivot point there are two ball bearings pressed into the suspension arm from either side. The problem is that there is a gap between the bearings in the middle so when the screw is tightened, it simply puts side force on the ball bearings and damages them immediately making the suspension movement notchy. I replaced all the ball bearings (from Amazon) and added shims in the middle to prevent this damage. Its difficult to describe, I'll probably do a video on it.

    @@Nonbock I just bought the 48v max pack external kit and did the installed to my scooter. I reflash the firmware software provided by my max mods and notice the scooter lost a tremendous amount of torque but did gain a little bit more speed at top end. Is your scooter experiencing the same thing? And what reflash did you installed on your scooter after the 48v conversion? Thanks

    Fantastic mods, I still slightly disagree with the 48 Volt mod for several reasons, but that's my opinion. I don't like risking overheating and burning up the motor, burning connectors, adding weight, increasing charger carryon weight, going through tires faster, etc. The Front and rear suspension were pretty interesting, but that steering damper could be a lifesaver I'm sure.

    Great video. Love the idea with the wondow to oberserve the interiors. Couple question: What are lengths of those shock absorbers that you use? I know that there are 150, 165 and 190 mm options. What I could see other people do is they put a 165 mm on the front suspension and 150 mm on the back. It seems like this also solves the problem of leveling the scooter. Another question is about folding the scooter. After the installation of the rear monorim suspension is it still possible to attach the clip which is on the handlebar to the monorim hook on your scooter? Cheers.

  • @Nonbock

    @Nonbock

    Жыл бұрын

    Both my shocks are 150mm, but the 160 on the front as you say should work great to lift it up and save all the modifications I did. Yes you can still fold the handle down and clip it to the monorim hook. You will have to twist the clip on the handlebar a little.

    I have most of these mods on mine as of late. I really want to raise the front as well. I'm not experienced with welding however - is the finished product as strong and able to take the force and impacts as before welding? Is that a consideration?

  • @kudu2you
    @kudu2you2 жыл бұрын

    First of all, thanks for the info sharing. May I ask more about your experience with the front suspension only? I will do some upgrades, but I'm not sure if I want a rear suspension. Is the rear suspension make a substantial difference? My guess is that the front could be a gamechanger, but the rear does not add so many values as the front when you upgrade the stock setup. What is your opinion about this?

  • @Nonbock

    @Nonbock

    2 жыл бұрын

    You are correct in your thinking. I started with the front only and ran it like that for a while and I was happy with the modification. The air shock is important though, it makes the experience so much better and refined. However after adding the rear, it made a further improvement especially when hopping off curbs and on bumpy surfaces.

    Nice mods Alex... well done! Just to let you know that Monorim offers the DMXE and MXRE series now with these same air shocks...unfortunately with single chamber only. Their front suspension is a twin shock system...do you think that might be a better option than a single shock? This will permit to pressurize less than with a single shock and it would be a redundancy security in the event of a shock failure. Cheers, Phil

  • @Nonbock

    @Nonbock

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Phil, I am not 100% sure how the single chamber compares. My guess is that the dual chamber helps with top out damping, ie when the front wheel comes off the ground there may be a clunk noise as the shock goes to full extension on the single chamber unit.

  • @Nonbock

    @Nonbock

    2 жыл бұрын

    A dual shock setup is redundant and not necessary in my opinion. The air shocks I have had for about 8 months now and they don't lose pressure at all. Very well made.

    Russell, I have changed only one valve stem. A new one came with a replacement tire, so I tried installing it. I discovered that the new stem diameter was slightly larger than the original one and would not go through the hole in the rim. So I compared the size of the original stem and the new one and drilled out the hole in the wheel by that same amount. It wasn't much, about 0.2mm. After that I applied some soapy solution to the valve and it pulled through the hole without any problems. It has been fine ever since.

    You're brake is supposed to be positioned that way because you're supposed to keep a grasp on the bar while you're breaking, only 1 or 2 fingers on the brake lever, because if you hit a bump it could knock the handle bar from your grip. The higher end scooters have short brake levers so you can't squeeze it on your fingers

    No, except for some pressure guidelines, mostly important to note that the larger chamber needs to be a higher pressure than the smaller one. I experimented with different pressures to get the best feel. As I recall 40psi in the large chamber and 30 in the small one. Note that the seals stick to the shaft after about a day of non use. You have to bounce the scooter to free up the seal then it will be fine for the ride.

    I love my es3 but also hated some stuff to it. I was on Budget when I bought my ES3 got it for like $120 like new from someone who bought it but didn’t like it so let it sit. But one thing I hated was the electronic brakes I wished it had a disk or drum brake to help have more braking power. Didn’t like not having suspensions in the rear either So I bought a pneumatic 8in wheel with drum brakes and drilled 3 holes on my scooter to fit a lever brake with the drum brakes and wheels so much better Other thing I hated was how short the handle bars were, as some who goes cycling having proper bar length was important so I 3d printed an extension and bought new bicycle grips also and added a customer peak design Mount also.

  • @Nonbock

    Yes Justin, The 150mm length shock was a direct replacement for the original spring unit that came with the Monorim. Note that the air shock seals will stick when left unused overnight or longer. You have to bounce on the scooter to unstick them at the beginning of each ride. After unsticking, they are fine for the rest of the ride until it sits a while without use. Apply some oil to the shock shaft to reduce the sticking effect. (they advise that in the info that comes with them)

    On the early design front suspension video you have seen, the front fender did not move up and down with the wheel so when the suspension compressed, the wheel would contact the fender and act like a sudden brake. The design now has a fender mount that goes up and down with the wheel and clearance remains constant. No longer an issue.

    Although I must admit that I’m also guilty of operating with just one hand I’ll strongly recommend that both hands should be on the handlebars at all times. It’s just not worth it. If you have to take off one of your hands for whatever reason just stop for a moment until you are done and take off again. While it can be annoying to come to a stop a few times during a ride in reality it won’t increase your travel time in a meaningful way. Having an accident on the other hand will cost you that at minimum. Scooters are dangerous enough as it is (mainly because of riding position) but at least with a firm grip on both handlebars you can have enough control to lessen the severity of any accident. Trust me - the last thing you want is to hit some nasty pothole, collide with something or someone. Actually even the tiniest patch of dust or sand can cause a skid you’ll remember for a long time.

  • @Nonbock

    That could be tricky. it is super stealthy because the motor is the rear wheel, no gears like on a hub drive bicycle. I have scared a lot of folks passing from behind even though I sound the bell to warn them. There's more wind noise than motor noise

    The one brake lever has two functions, initial application applies regen braking from the rear wheel and the next is the front brake. Yes in an emergency you need all that it has and it is pretty good. Most of the time I'm in regen braking and hardly use the front brake.

    How’s the rear set up 40psi,30psi

  • @Nonbock

    @Nonbock

    2 жыл бұрын

    Rear would be too soft with 40/30psi with my weight. It might be good with a light person. My best setting is 100/90psi on the rear. Front is good at 40/30. Note about the shocks, after sitting a couple of hours, the seals stick and you need to bounce one time on the scooter to free them up and they will be fine for the ride. You need to add a little oil to the shaft to lubricate the seals.

    I purchased my Ninebot Max in September 2019 (pre-order before release), I wish I had purchased the reflective stickers a lot earlier. I can’t find them anywhere nearby, all out of stock. I live in Belgium. Ofcourse I could buy some third-party reflective stickers in a local shop but those would never match my kickscooter as the original ones do. Great modifications. I really love the G30 Max.

  • @Nonbock

    The front makes the biggest difference. I ran just the front for a while before the rear. The rear suspension comes into its own when hopping off a curb or hitting a big bump.
