The Perfect Human Being Series E13 - Michael Sandel on the values of being a human being

Political philosopher Michael Sandel is interviewed by Dutch journalist and philosopher Bas Heijne. Sandel (Minneapolis, 1953) is a professor at Harvard University where he teaches the course 'Justice' which is an enormous success among students. He is widely known for his interactive lectures where he poses dilemma's about topics such as biotechnology. In this video, Heijne and Sandel talk about what it means to be human, the difference between healing and enhancing, and the future of humanity.
Bas Heijne (1960) is a Dutch writer and interviewer. He studied English language and literature, has published numerous books and is well-known for his opinionated essays and columns in newspaper NRC Handelsblad. For the tv series De Volmaakte Mens, Heijne went on a personal quest to discover what defines 'being human' in our increasingly technological society. He interviewed philosophers, technologists and scientists around the world, in search of the future of the human species.
This interview is an excerpt from the Dutch science programme De Volmaakte Mens (“The Perfect Human Being”), episode 4 'The Bionic Human'. The six-part science series De Volmaakte Mens was broadcast on Dutch television in Spring 2015.

Science is a process. Scientism is a belief. Sandel is an excellent speaker. Complex moral problems conveyed on layman's terms.

Michael is a phenomenal craftor and caster of words. Half of the message is not just in the words, but in the delivery. Substance and delivery are crucial brought together so well. Separately, I have becoming obsessed with this question of should we be changing the human condition. Transhumanist will argue the change enhances and improves the human condition. It seems that all 'great' civilisations and human projects have strived to 'perfect' the human condition and therefore the perfect human being. From judeo-abrhamic faiths and their moral virtues and guidelines (see moses commandments), to Western enlightenment values of humanism (we don't need God to be and do better, and the rise of self-help literature), to nazi Germany (eugenics and forcing a utopian vision of the perfect human being upon everyone). I believe only we can find our own salvation. The pursuit of perfecting our being is a choice and decision we must make within ourselves. Revolution never starts externally, but always from within. Then we can extrapolate from that to ask will this hurt or benefit my family, my neighbours, town, country, and the world etc...

Me encantaría que todas las entrevistas. conferencias, clases, del profesor Sandel que están en inglés las subtitularan en español; existe un número considerable de personas que no hablan inglés que están interesadas en sus enseñanzas, incluyéndome por supuesto. Gracias.

This is a pretty level headed view I think. Good stuff I wish people would be this level headed when It comes to political things, Its so emotionally strong and knee jerk reaction, people dont really try to hear the other guys argument. I guess you know the argument on either side Is maturing when people can come down enough lol

I love the idea that cheating is wrong because it changes the character of the competition. If I can use technology to run the 100 meter dash, what am I really competing for? At issue is whether a human being with nothing else can go reach such speeds in such few seconds. Strap a rocket on your back, put on some wheels, and we're now in a drag race, not a foot race. Lance Armstrong was not competing at the same sport and should not get that sport's recognition.

Science is not "Here is a map of the brain and this is everything we can say about it". There is for example Psychology, that can study questions like "What do people mean when they talk about meaning?". You can study humans from an evolutionary perspective, and ask how we became what we are today. Nowadays you even can study the human mind with introspective data and nobody will cry for calling it science.

3:44 "our humanity is not under threat by science", it is under threat by the lack of it. If killing an unborn baby because of down syndrome is what technology is used for, what is humanity if not valuing human life at any stage?

Live and let live, let parents alone, do unto others. If people want a smarter, taller, better looking , healthier child , it is none of your business to stick your nose in and spoil their dreams about their family, If you want dumb, short, ugly, sick children , be my guest, have lots of them and make your dreams come true, But you have no right to tell others what they should do, so but out.

The fallen man will never figure humanity out, Jesus said to Nicodemus, ' You must be born again.' The newewal of the mind and reproducing a spiritual man with the mind of Christ instead of religion and tradition and greed to be better than they're fellow man, you will see a perfect man. Jesus Christ is the perfect one that can judge us humans and the Holy Spirit who sees through our flaws and absene behavior is able to teach us how to be perfect and Holy as God. Be ye Holy as I am Holy. We are growing from glory to glory and from strength to strength in Jesus name. To God belongs all the Glory and honour. Amen
